Set One

01 – High Lonesome Sound
02 – Pig In A Pen
03 – Panama Red
04 – Wild Horses
05 – Hobo Song

Comments: This was a complete set (around 30 minutes). Doc
Watson performed before O&ITW and Jim and Jesse McReynolds
and the Virginia Boys performed after O&ITW. The same setlist
for this tape and also 04/28/74 make it a little suspicious.

admin note, 1/30/2011: the song names are about the only correct information in the above info file. There was no OAITW set on 4/27/74. The only OAITW set of the festival was on Sun. 4/28/74, to close out the festival. It doesn’t matter what your info files say … trust us. So the above comment, that Jim & Jesse followed OAITW, is just patently incorrect. One can hear continuous tape from the end of Hobo Song to whatt are clearly festival-ending comments from the stage. Also, this is not an aud, but a significantly degraded soundboard. High Lonesome Sound cuts in, and this whole thing is running about 6% slow … ouch.

  • This is not a high fidelity recording, but it is not bad. It certainly puts you in the
    time and place pretty well.

Thanks to everyone in involved in getting this from the Festival to our hard drives!

Barebones takes with drums, bass, keyboard, and Jerry only. No backup singers or horns. Not sure if this was a recording session for the album or possibly a tour rehearsal.

None of this material appears on the original “Run For The Roses” commercial release or the “All Good Things” boxed set meaning that the versions have been compared directly and they are not at all the same (e.g. not a version with just an additional analog gen or just a different mix). December 1981 would have been at the tail end of the recording sessions for the album.

I’m fairly certain it is a stereo cassette mixdown from a reel source as you can hear the reel speeding up when it cuts in at the start of a couple takes. All fades are on the master.
