Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 31: I Left My Mind Behind

It’s been a little over a year since I did one of these, so there was lots to choose from. Three songs here are new to the series: “Dignity,” “Goin’ To Acapulco,” and “Standing in the Doorway.” Plenty of new artists too. This one goes out to the blogger at Music Ruined My Life, who has been making the series available in MP3.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

NOTE: Lots of people ask me for past volumes in the series. If you are able to re-upload past volumes, please do! And if you’re willing to trade past volumes, please put a note in the comments section so the needy can get in touch. Thanks, Jeff

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 32: Tales of Dark Heat and Vain Love

In celebration of Mr. Dylan’s return to Dime, here’s a Street Legal edition of NSD. I send this out with a warm thank you to Chopen, who has reposted the missing volumes of the series both here and at HC.

If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Finally, I’d like to wish you all a Happy Festivus. When you are done listening to this collection it will be time for the Airing of Grievances, followed by the Feats of Strength.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 27: Curtain Risin’ On a New Age

I am taking a quick break from 24/7 cable coverage of the US presidential primaries to bring you Volume 27 in this ongoing collection of Dylan covers.

As you may know, a couple of volumes of NSD have been retroactively banned due to Van Morrison’s new status on the NAB list (you can run a search to see which volumes). If anyone still has the FLACs and wants to repost them without the offending tracks, it would be appreciated!

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, PM me.

Enjoy!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 18: Tombstone Bluegrass

I was going to call this one “Tangled Up in Bluegrass,” but it turns out there’s an official release by that name, so “Tombstone Bluegrass” it is. From bluegrass legends like Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson to newgrass combos like String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band, Dylan’s music is beloved among purveyors of mountain music. Only one new song to the NSD canon this time (“Father of Night” by Tim O’Brien), but but 14 new artists to the series. A few of these tracks might not technically fall into the bluegrass genre, but they all fit together quite nicely.

As usual, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, please PM me.

Enjoy!

Various Artists
Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 17: You’re Jammin’ Me

Beginning with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s songs have always provided ripe pickings for the so-called jam band scene, so it seems fitting to dedicate a volume of NSD to the best of these covers. Not surprisingly, this volume has fewer songs than any other so far, given these groups’ tendencies to stretch things out. So we have nine tracks (three new songs, six new artists to the series), averaging almost nine minutes each. We kick things off, of course, with the Dead, and end with the band that did the most to keep their grateful spirit alive, Phish. But my favorites here are two rarely covered songs from the pen of Born Again Bob, “Solid Rock” and “When You Gonna Wake Up,” given powerful run-throughs by Widespread Panic and Little Feat, respectively.

If you like this sort of thing, there’s plenty more to be had at the Live Music Archive (www.archive.org/details/etree), which features free dowloads from artists who have given their explicit approval. Also, this seems like a good time to heap praise upon DylanCover.com, a veritable encyclopedia of information on all things DylanCover, which has been a boon to my research as I’ve put this series together.
