Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 18: Tombstone Bluegrass

I was going to call this one “Tangled Up in Bluegrass,” but it turns out there’s an official release by that name, so “Tombstone Bluegrass” it is. From bluegrass legends like Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson to newgrass combos like String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band, Dylan’s music is beloved among purveyors of mountain music. Only one new song to the NSD canon this time (“Father of Night” by Tim O’Brien), but but 14 new artists to the series. A few of these tracks might not technically fall into the bluegrass genre, but they all fit together quite nicely.

As usual, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, please PM me.

Enjoy!

Oldneumanntapr Notes;
This was my very first String Cheese Incident show. My friend Dave and I drove down to Santa Barbara to see the show. I had heard that the band was taping friendly, but when I walked in and asked about recording I was asked if I wanted a straight board recording or a matrix. That blew me away! I elected for a straight board recording, and I gave my D7 DAT and patch cable to one of the band’s crew who plugged it into a long chain of DATs on a plastic folding table. They ran all the decks so I had nothing to do for this show but to sit back and watch the performance. I was amazed with how tight they were. Progressive bluegrass at its best!!! This show definitely made me a SCI fan!!

The next time I saw them, again at the Coach House North the following year in 1999, they no longer allowed soundboard access but still welcomed audience recording. It was good while it lasted! The Coach House North, formally the Red Dog Saloon, is a small club with a really low ceiling in Santa Barbara, close to Milpas Street near the beach.
