OldNeumanntapr Notes:
All I can say is that this band seriously needs someone to stand near the stage with a fire extinguisher because THESE GUYS SMOKE!!!! Wow. I really enjoyed seeing / recording this band, especially after hearing repeated plays of ‘Pie For Breakfast’ on K-Pig FM, from Santa Cruz but simulcast in SLO County. To make matters sweeter, Cuesta Ridge was opening the show and I am the archivist for that band since my brother in law Brent plays drums for them. Well, I’d probably go and record them anyway even if he wasn’t because they are really hot. Brent put me on the guest list for this show which was nice that I could save a few dollars.

I got there at 6 pm at soundcheck and had no trouble securing permission from the headliner to make an audience / soundboard matrix recording. It made things easy seeing how my mic cables were already taped down because I had to leave them set up after the Heartless Bastards show on Sunday after the bouncers set up the general admission wall over them that separates the bar from the stage area. So, I just attached the microphones to the cables and adjusted them in a basic ORTF position but made sure to point them to the stage to pick up sound from the on-stage amplifiers. I was ready to record the sound check and adjust my mix once I got the mixer and recorder / preamp set up and the 1/4 inch cables run from the board. I asked Kip, SLO Brew house sound man, if I could plug into Matrix 3 and 4 on the board and he commented that I was getting used to doing so!

The Brothers Comatose played a 40 minute sound check which was like a mini set and was icing on the cake to what looked to be a pretty good evening shaping up. They sound checked for so long that by the time Cuesta Ridge was ready to do their sound check the doors were opening and people were coming in to the building.

Cuesta Ridge played a little over 40 minutes and were in fine form. Their set, along with all their others, can be found on the Live Music Archive. Look up:
https://archive.org/details/CuestaRidge

The addition of the audience microphones, which were hung on the front ceiling post about 10ft high and nine feet from stage center, makes a big difference in the energy level of the show. You can really hear how into it the crowd was, as compared to a straight board recording where the crowd sounds like they are off in the distance.

My sister was there and bought me a couple of cold Coronas, Thanks Steph!, and the guys at the booth next to me bought me another beer and thanked me for recording live music. I told them thanks, and that I have been recording for almost 29 years now.

Pie For Breakfast was the third song of the set and was really nice to hear live.
I will definitely see and record these guys again because they put on a great show.
During the encore I was able to make my way through the crowd (which was packed) to the front of the stage to get a set list once the show was over. The guy next to me gave me a dirty look when I pushed up to the stage but I smiled as I grabbed the set list and said that I needed it to be able to post the recording to the LMA. He said, ‘OK, go ahead’.

Another show successfully archived. In the words of another taper, ‘If it wasn’t recorded it’s just a memory’. Enjoy all.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was a fun show, but I was crushed to have to deal with an equipment failure that almost cost me the recording. The Fremont is an old Art-Deco-styled movie theater dating back to WWII. It has a capacity of just under 1000 and is very ornate, with lots of neon and a high marquee outside. Inside it has a Huge old-fashion lobby and tapestries on the walls. The ceiling of the theater is festooned with an inset of what looks to me like a bird’s head and beak. The inside of the theater has curved walls and the room has great acoustics. I’ve been seeing movies in that theater now for almost 40 years and it’s a favorite.

The doors opened at 7 pm and I arrived at 5:30 pm and went in through the back door, having already been pre-approved for recording privileges from the band through Todd Newman, of Good Medicine Presents. Kip, the house soundman who I have known since 1992 when he was at Loco Ranchero, knew I was coming and helped me out with power and a board patch from his Behringer X32 digital soundboard. I was able to run my Canare 25ft XLR cables from the board across the right aisle (taped down) and I set up in the last row of the theater. I set the stand up next to me and stacked all my gear on the inside chair. I had to also tape down the power cables from the Mackie mixer and the AC power supply for the Tascam, and patch everything together.

I ran a SBD/AUD matrix with the Neumann KM-140s >Lunatec V2 (30db gain), and monitored with my Sennheiser 770 headphones.

I ran an approx. 70/30 % split, with the ambient mics turned up just enough to catch some crowd and the sound of the room. The audience mics gave a nice reverb and made the recording a bit more three dimensional, because you can hear the interaction between the band and the crowd, and also hear a little of the room acoustics.

I normally do not record openers, but the two opening bands sounded really good in sound check. The first was two guys on acoustic guitars, and the second band was a five piece with guitar, banjo, stand up double bass, fiddle, and drums. Really good sound. I was impressed being that they were two local bands. I decided to record them, if for nothing else but to dial in the mix so everything would be set for the headliners. I also thought it would be nice to maybe add two other bands to the Live Music Archive on Archive.org.

When I went to switch CF flash cards to get ready for the start of the Brothers Comatose set, my Tascam flashed a message that said my 4 gig card was corrupted. I tried it several times, and even turned the power off and on but no luck. It kept saying ‘Change Card’.

So, I had no choice but to reformat the first card and erase the two opening sets I’d just recorded. I was so bummed, as I had told both bands that I could get them a copy of their sets later. As it was, I had JUST enough room for the headliner, because the first card was only 2 gigs. I think I had four minutes to spare at the end of the set!

A real bummer that a $10 card almost prevented me from recording the show. It had worked perfectly on the last recording that I had done. Luckily I had brought two cards with me!

This was my third Brothers Comatose show and they never fail to put on a good performance. I love recording them, and I love recording in the Fremont. I’ve been waiting for a while to get to do a SBD/AUD matrix in that room and this was a great chance to do so. A HUGE thanks to The Brothers Comatose for allowing live recording. Thanks also to Todd and Korie Newmann from Good Medicine Presents, and thanks to Kip Stork for his help with the board patch.
(Someone threw a big black bra onstage during ‘Trippin’ On Down’. I saw something fly through the air and Ben picked it up in the middle of the song and put it on his head. The other band members took turns clowning around with it for a while. Too funny!) This was a late night for me. I wasn’t expecting two opening bands but it was a really fun show and I was glad I was there. I had a pizza at Woodstocks at midnight and was home by almost 1 am. Yawn. I was dead at work on Friday, but it was worth it.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
I was really impressed with last year’s Brothers Comatose show at SLO Brew and was determined to record them once again. Since SLO Brew closed down in December of 2015, Todd of ‘Good Medicine Presents’ has been promoting concerts at various local venues including Tap It Brewing Company, where this show took place. (I’m going to miss SLO Brew, but they are building new office buildings on the entire block.) I’d never been to Tap It before, but knew it was out by the airport. However, I didn’t know that the concert area was outdoors! When I’d asked Corey, Todd’s wife, at the recent Los Lobos concert if Tap It Brewing Company was a good room to record in she said that it was a ‘great room’. So on arrival, it was a little disconcerting to find that I would be recording outdoors with NO windscreens for my Neumanns! There was a little bit of a breeze blowing while I was setting up and I knew that my plans for a matrix recording was in serious jeopardy. (This was my first show with my new Mackie mixer. Yay! No more borrowing gear from Bill Gaines Audio!) Fortunately, Chad (the Brothers Comatose Soundman) let me use the windscreens from the Rode microphones that he had set up to record with. I tried to patch his Zoom recorder into my rig but had some problems, so he elected to let me record. Thanks so much Chad for the use of the windscreens! One thing I didn’t take into account was the fact that the machinery used for the brewery of the production of beer was directly next to the soundboard area, on the other side of a fence. Periodically, a loud hissing noise could be heard, most likely a pressure relief valve that would blow off steam from the beer tanks. When this occurred I tried to drop the levels on the audience microphones, but it can still be heard. I asked Kip about it and he laughed and said that it, ‘Goes off all night.’ Oh joy.

The Brothers Comatose has a new CD out and they played a couple of the new songs. They are a very high energy acoustic band and once again did not disappoint! Thanks guys for allowing live recording and the sharing of your music. I enjoyed the new songs and still love the old favorites like ‘Pie For Breakfast’, though this rendition was marred when Gio’s bass cable because unplugged and he was forced to use his voice to mimic the missing bass.
Thanks to Todd and Corey from ‘Good Medicine Presents’, thanks to house soundman Kip Stork for his ever present help, and Chad from ‘The Brothers Comatose’. Thanks to the band for putting on a great show. Go see their live shows and support the band by buying their merchandise!
