As always (even when I forget to mention her) thanks to Nellie over at Expecting rain.

Bob played 49 concerts between 6/5 Denver & 9/18 Dallas.

These concerts were mainly double-header concerts with Paul Simon (where they alternated opening for each other every night),
along with some breakout club shows which were performed without Paul Simon,
along with the Crossroads benefit concert in New York with Eric Clapton.

Due to Bob playing with both the Paul Simon & Eric Clapton bands on occasions, some songs are duplicated in this compilation.
Some songs were played jointly with Paul Simon, with backup from the “opening” band.
All 81 songs played on this tour leg are included here.
This is a very misunderstood tour leg, which was widely criticized as a commercial money-grab at the time.

Having listened carefully to the available tracks from best possible sources (& all in FLAC),
I can assure you that the quality of both performance & sound is up there with the best of the NET.

What surprised me most were Bob’s sincere efforts to make the collaborations with Paul Simon interesting. The band alternated each night (depending on who opened), but each joint song also varied in structure from night to night with some great vocals from Bob (doing his best Art Garfunkel impersonation) & some very interesting harmonica. Bob probably drove Paul Simon nuts doing it but it worked. This might sound totally weird but lining up these collaboration songs & playing them one after the other is actually quite interesting!

49 concerts is a lot of concerts for one tour leg, but it holds up from start to finish.

PS – Bob also told a lot of jokes – I’m glad he did nor pursue a career in comedy.

Notes:

A bit distant but very good sounding, stereo audience recording sourced from unknown gen analog transferred to CDR which I downloaded in 2006. It suffered from fast speed and slight channel imbalance which I corrected for this seed. Obviously, the recording had been done on a 90 mins Cassette as there’s a cut around 45 mins on each side which unfortunately means that the last part of Amazing Journey and Sparks are missing on the first side as well as the last part of Naked Eye and the conclusion of the show on the second. There’s an additional cut after Heaven And Hell, maybe the taper wanted to save time at first and then decided to just let the tape run to the end. I am not aware of other sources so it looks like we will sadly never hear the full show. And a great show it is!

The band played the first of two shows in a poorly ventilated, privately owned ballroom. The Who were denied use of Red Rocks Amphitheatre by the City of Denver at the time because of a ban on hard rock shows at the famous outdoor venue. I Don’t Even Know Myself was introduced into the set on this night and Sally Simpson was played here for the last time until 1989. The two concerts in Denver grossed $ 45,000 in a city they had almost skipped altogether on this month-long tour.

Liner notes:
The New Musical Express, the British music weekly with the largest circulation, staged a series of concerts in the sixties featuring artists who topped their popularity polls. The concerts, known as ‘The Poll Winners’ Concerts’, were all held in Wembley. This two CD set documents the second to last Poll Winner Concert held on April 11, 1965 at Wembley Stadium. An edited version of this concert was screened on ABC TV and networked throughout the UK on April 18 of that year. This set was compiled from the soundtrack of the unedited master.

Notes from David Chance:
The back of the package says “The cream of British music as chosen by the readers of The New Musical Express presented in concert on April 11, 1965 at Wembley Stadium.”

The cover has a small photograph of The Beatles performing at this concert. The liner has stock photos of The Rolling Stones, Donovan, The Animals, The Kinks, and Them. This is the first appearance of a live recording by Them (their first BBC radio studio session was in March 1965 — see Bluesology, which would technically be the first “live” recordings, albeit from the studio…this is in front of a concert audience). As per the liner notes, this is a soundboard-quality recording.

Them are introduced by Jimmy Savile, who says (jokingly) that they have “just finished a tour with the Lutten (sp?) Girls Choir and will have to leave the country very, very shortly.” The band takes a moment to soundcheck and then launches into “Here Comes The Night”. The freshness of the song to the band may, perhaps, be heard when, after the first chorus, Van begins the first verse a moment too soon, quickly catches himself, begins again and carries the song to it’s finish wonderfully.

There are the immediate strains of “Turn On Your Love Light”, with Van making some “noises” and tearing into the song. As the tempo speeds up, Alan Henderson (?) begins stirring the audience by urging them to join along. The song then meanders in a psychedlic blues groove for a moment before it picks up tempo again and works out to a close. Jimmy Savile exits Them with a humorous comment on the brevity of the band’s name (“pretty soon we’ll have bands like ‘A’, and ‘The'”).
