Rock On Interview

This interview with John Tobler appears to have been recorded in Belfast around 20/21 February 1979, when Van returned to perform in Belfast for the first time since Them days. It was broadcast on the BBC Radio 1 programme “Rock On”, introduced by Tommy Vance, a couple of months later.

I recorded this on poor quality tape on a domestic radio/cassette, so the sound quality is mediocre, but first generation. Also missed the odd word here and there due to clumsy tape flips. When Tobler refers to an annual poll of favourite songs, he’s talking about John Peel’s festive fifty. Madame George (not Astral Weeks as Tobler incorrectly states) was voted #21 in the 1978 Festive Fifty.

Van Morrison-6 March 1992-Colston Hall, Briistol-uncirculated
Received on 2 CDRs from Graf Ritmo who transcribed his complete cassettes.
To hard drive with EAC. Edited for continuous flow in Adobe Audition : edited at beginning and end. Cassette turnovers and subsequent edits audible at 41m, 1h 20m, 1h 53m ñ the break at 41m is the most obvious before Foggy Mountain Top
Normalised and nothing else. Flaced with TLH to level 6

This is the fourth recording to be sent to dime from a series Iíve called The Lost Welsh Masters. Practically every Van show in and around Wales from the 80s onwards was recorded by one diligent taper, Graf Ritmo. Many have never been circulated, and in the case of this show we didnít even know it had taken place. It didnít get listed on NWís website, nor the subsequent Wavelength Master List, nor is it on the vanomatic site. Somehow it slipped through the net in the pre inter-net days. Really glad itís surfaced in such great quality and itís a fine, long show with Van firing on all cyclinders and the band now really settled in.
