Notes:
A 3CD set from Doberman Records that features the highlights of the four sets Van played in the U.K. in August 1998. The first two discs feature ALL of the songs performed at the two shows at the International Festival in Ross-On-Wye on 21/8/98 (the complete early show, and all the different tracks from the late set) plus a bonus disc with 12 tracks recorded at the two sets performed as part of the Jazz Festival at the Market Hall in Brecon, with all different material to the Ross shows. There were some very interesting performances at these shows, with a lot of material NOT found on the earlier 1998 cds. The following information is offered from the sleeve notes:
This release captures the highlights of all of Van’s performances on the “A40 corridor”, and indeed the whole of the UK, during August 1998. The main body of this set, captured on discs one and two originate from the two sets performed as part of the International Festival in Ross-On-Wye on 21/8/98. The performances took place under canvas, in a marquee, at an idyllic riverside location, and the lovely, relaxed surroundings coaxed Van into a very good natured, and at times downright hilarious performance. The set lists were littered with unusual songs and performances, the sound quality was fantastic, and there was a striking amount of material different to the six Arena shows played in the UK just a few weeks before. Disc Three centers on the two sets performed as part of the Brecon Jazz Festival on 7/8/98. These remarkable shows took place at a strange venue, a Market Hall, which is unfortunately the chief reason that these shows are not covered in more detail, as the acoustics of this venue left a lot to be desired, as concert sound quality was clearly not a consideration when this building was designed (and neither for that matter were sight lines-the numerous posts around the venue led to many restricted views for those in attendance!). The music on offer, however, overcame the limitations of the surroundings, with surprise after surprise, and a late show that failed to duplicate the early set by a single song! Some of these highlights were duplicated at the Ross-On-Wye shows two weeks later, but 12 of the 14 songs not performed at the these later shows are captured here from the best available source tapes.

Review by Naveen:
What you have with Doberman’s latest release is the pentultimate representation of the Van live canon as it has evolved through out the past 12 months. This 3 disc presentation is the best, in a long line of live cds, that Doberman has produced during the past year. Where Van has seemingly been on auto during his shows with Bob Dylan, here we find Van in his element. Playing to a small crowd and digging out some old chestnuts (“Take Your Hand Out of My Pocket” ?), Van seems rejuvenated and inspired.

Van gives a lively performance of his TPS songs, but what makes this so facinating is hearing the man attack the blues as if he really ‘felt’ it. With “TV Mama”, “Fool For You”, and “Georgia”, you have three songs that clearly define where Van is headed. No perfuntory emotion, and no lame attempt at satisfying the masses, here Van is playing for himself. This is good stuff and the recording is excellent. Give Doberman credit for not duplicating the entire second show from Ross, as there were a few repeats from the Early show, but you get only the songs that were performed on the Late show not played on the Early. This set is a classic that will played on your system often.
