OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the first concert that I recorded since 2019, which by the way, was also Richard Thompson (Electric Trio) at the Fremont Theater. I’m always telling myself, ‘This is the LAST show I’m going to record’, but then my friend in SLO will contact me about another show coming up and I will relent.
I didn’t have much choice these past two years because of the pandemic. No one was seeing any live music. For this show I had planned on bring in my Beyer MV100 microphone preamp but when I got to the show and took a photo of the front of the theater from across the street I noticed that they were using a wand to go over people before they entered. Damn! It takes all the fun out of it when I have to resort to subterfuge to get my gear inside. So, I decided to leave the preamp in the car and run the Neumanns directly into the XLR jacks of the Tascam recorder. The sound inside was really good and I couldn’t really tell much of a difference in the recording after using the internal preamp compared to the Beyer. I’m still kicking myself that I missed the two opening songs, but I was under the assumption that there would be an opening act and I was late getting in. Also, I had forgotten to switch on the phantom power on the back of the Tascam (which powers the microphones) because usually I use the phantom power that the Beyer preamp supplies. So it threw me at first when I wasn’t getting any levels on the recorder when I DID start to record. I guess I’m a little rusty after not recording anything these last two years.

Thanks (as always) to Flying M for the outstanding job he does in post production by reducing loud clapping and cleaning things up to make a more enjoyable listening experience, and thanks to Ethiessen for the great cover artwork and graphic arts design! Thanks also to Dave for persuading me to go to see another great show.

*From 10/21/2017 Sao Paulo Night #2

There are 2 different downloads for this show.

Download #1:

  1. “Wet Mix” – Full mix done by Sharebear

Download #2:

  1. “Dry Mix” – Mastered Wireless Only Mix, no AUD + Crowd
  2. “Unmastered Mix” – Unmastered wireless Only Mix. All post-mix effects have been disabled.
  3. “Audience” – Unmastered CA-11 Cardoid Audience source. Recorded from front row, lower level, 5-6 sections away from stage. No work applied other than time alignment. Note that some wind causes minor phasing.

Show Comments:
Closing Night of the Tour. Tour has come a long way since the opener in Vancouver. While it won’t be remembered as U2’s greatest tour, going to Sao Paulo for four nights was a lot of fun. Good show overall and enthusiastic (yet respectful at key points) crowd.

I included the performance of Bad from the second show as a bonus. Mostly just because I was very fond of that version.

Recording Notes:
Nothing too crazy. My usual rig and setup. There were some technical issues beyond my control, which led to a bit of distortion on the high end of Bono’s vocals. Audience recording is generally pretty solid.

Mixing Notes:
Biggest blemish in my opinion is the minor distortion on Bono’s vocals. I’ve done the usual array of tricks with metronome and count removal, but you can still hear some remnants if you listen closely.

Usually when I release something, a bunch of folks tell me “Oh I wish it had more audience” or “I wish it had less audience”. Of course, most of these folks don’t mix so it’s gut feeling. For the Vancouver 2015 multicam, I released three different mixes with varying level of audience…and still had people wanting different levels of audience (“Could you make a mix that’s between the Wet mix and Goldilocks mix?”). As I did with Vancouver 2017, I’m presenting this show in a few different formats.

For those wanting a recording that seeks to sound like an officially mixed live recording, check out the “Wet” mix. I have uploaded this as a separate package for ease of downloading.

For those looking to “Build-A-Mix Kit”, I’ve included in a separate package the Dry Mix + Unmastered Mix + CA11 AUD. Dry mix is a mastered IEM-only mix with my usual bells and whistles, Unmastered is without a lot of the sweetener (although still plenty on individual tracks), and then the Raw AUD. Everything is time aligned.

So with the Dry (or unmastered) and AUD, all the aspiring mixers can create their individual mix to their own tastes. For anybody wanting a full mix, check out my Wet mix. For anybody wanting more of straight soundboard type sound, check out the Dry mix. If you want only an audience, check out the straight audience recording.

I do ask that the aspiring mixers refrain from torrenting their outstanding mixes. I think it would be a bad thing to have a ton of different mixes popping around the internet–better that everybody just tries their own hand at it. But feel free to post clips of your mix in torrent comments.

As always, encouraging people to get into taping and mixing. Just take the craft seriously and it will reward you many times over. There’s no point in complaining about missing recordings or subpar quality if you’re not contributing–pushing 1’s and 0’s around on the internet is no comparison for taping.

IEM recordings are not for everyone. If not they’re not your thing, either sonically or ethically, there’s excellent alternative recordings out there.

Similarly, I’m mixing primarily for my ears. This is what sounds best to me. This may not sound best to you. That’s a fair statement. I’m open to honest criticism (although you should have caught me when I was working on the mix!), but pointless complaining is unappreciated (naturally). Let’s play nice.

Please don’t sell this recording in any way – no cash for blanks, 2:1s, or any other form of “getting paid for your time”. Just share it freely.

Please don’t convert to mp3, then back to wave, and then trade it around. This stuff is too easy to find on torrents now.

Feel free to remaster/remix this recording. Just keep it to your own computer and iPod.

Also, please don’t torrent or share on other sites without at least dropping me a line and asking. I may want to just torrent/share it there myself.

Please ask (and wait for permission!) before putting it into any matrix + video production. If you ask nicely for a quality high-res video project, I will likely say ìyesî. If you put it on YouTube or cell phone video production without asking, I will send my cats from hell to chew your computer cables.

Enjoy y’all!

This was recorded by a guy named “Island”, he mostly taped shows on VHS-C
type video, but after meeting me, and collecting audio tapes, he was inspired to bring an audio deck to this show.
Good thing too, because he was too close and the audio was very distorted on
the video, so I dubbed this sound to sync to the video.
there is 25 minutes of video total, but I will need to do a new transfer before it can be shared. It will be posted to youtube with the rest of Island’s video that I have copied from his masters.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCaQbEHkPDPhBxsVAv8zqoQ/videos

I can’t explain why the audio is so clear other than this was festival
Seating and he was very close. I don’t think it was on a high quality deck or
mics but still sounds excellent.
I doubt this recording has ever been circulated before.

When I heard from my ‘partner-in-crime’ that his friend Brian’s wife couldn’t make the show I couldn’t pay him for the ticket fast enough. I love John Hiatt and especially enjoy hearing him play solo acoustic. As usual, John tells some funny stories between songs and does a few requests. There was one guy who kept asking for ‘Feels Like Rain’. The Fremont is a beautiful theater and has wonderful acoustics and it is always a real pleasure to see a live performance there. The Fremont was built in 1942 and was one of San Luis Obispo’s two art-deco movie theaters, the other being the Obispo, which was built in 1911 and burned to the ground in late 1975. Though the Fremont still has provisions for showing films, the SLO Film Festival is held there every spring, it has since been converted to a performing arts theater. Thanks so much to Flying M for his wonderful job at post production fairy dust. 🙂

The Friday Night Horror Movie: Nocturne (2020)

nocturne movie poster

I don’t know why I keep watching films made under the Blumhouse banner. They are all well made. They have good production values. They look great. They are often very well-acted and usually the direction is handled well. But there is something so slick, so generic about them that I find almost all of them instantly forgettable. They feel as if they are made by a committee in a factory instead of by a passionate creator with a specific point of view.

Nocturne is a perfect example of this. It has a decent story and it was obviously made by good craftsmen. But it feels like a retread of Black Swan with a bit of Whiplash thrown in but with no interesting ideas of its own.

Juliet (Sydney Sweeney) and Vivian Lowe (Madison Iseman) are twin sisters who have been training to become concert pianists from a very young age. Vivian is the prodigy having just been accepted to Julliard while Juliet did not get accepted, and as it was the only school she applied too will be taking a year off. They are both seniors at a prestigious music academy.

The film begins with another student, the best in her class committing suicide by jumping off a balcony. She was set to star in the senior showcase and now there is an empty spot. All seniors are welcome to apply.

Juliet accidentally discovers the dead girl’s theory notebook which is full of all kinds of mystical horror movie drawings. Naturally, she starts using it and naturally her musical skills improve dramatically.

The sisters don’t seem to like each other very much and their rivalry skyrockets now that they have the chance to star in the senior showcase.

All of this is a good setup for something interesting to happen. But it never does. I expected the notebook angle to go into supernatural occult territory. It seemed to think about doing exactly that, but then pulled back. Juliet keeps studying and playing the songs inside it. Her skills improve and her life begins mimicking the weird drawings inside. But she never takes it too far.

The sisters fight. One of them gets hurt. One of them cheats with the other one’s boyfriend, but again the film never really runs with these ideas. A film like this should take extremes. It doesn’t need to be sort of realistic.

It is a Blumhouse film so the production values are high. It looks good. I think Sydney Sweeney is a very fine actress, but there is nothing for her to really bite into here.

Two months from now I’ll be scrolling through Amazon and I’ll see this film pop up. I’ll have to look it up on Letterboxd to see if I’ve seen it before and I’ll be surprised by the answer.
