Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70’s bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several “under the radar” acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ’ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

Always remember – the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Many, many thanks to the dutch long time TH + TTC fan Hans Devente, (Madtaper) for this recording !!!!!!!!!!

He´s a good friend with the bands over 30 years……..

I got in contact with Hans some months ago.

I was very proud to get his TH tape collection in wave format, after he posted some mp3 stuff on a blog.

Anyway. I gave him some money for his work to transfer all the tapes.

He has a fantastic collection all over he years and most of them never saw the light before !!!!!

Some more stuff will come, and this one is the 4th.

BTW: I made 15 tracks out of that wave file and “I Zimbra” includes the “Intro” (it was better to cut) and “Houses In Motion” is in 2 tracks (pert 1 & 2).

So: SHARE & ENJOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

comments:
I previously posted this show neglecting to delete a released track, causing it to be banned. I am sorry for that and am reposting with the one (and thankfully only) released track removed this time. A high energy outdoor Talking Heads summer show in the Big Apple. It’s a nice recording, not too much crowd noise and a little better deck and mikes were used for this, than the L.A. one that’s going up (after it gets a new transfer, I was all set to post it then found out it’s offspeed.) as a seperate companion to this, a sort of Heads in the West and East U.S.A. of this fine tour they did in late 80 and early 81 with Adrian Belew. This one is a little shorter show, even before removing the released track, (I think this is otherwise complete except a few seconds missed at the end of 1 song, I think it’s track 9- houses), they’re both nice concerts. This one has both my favorite songs of this or any Talking Heads tour, and hot versions of both, Crosseyed and Painless and Born Under Punches. (no crosseyed in LA, even though it’s a full 80 minute show). I am not certain that this is an almost complete show, but I think it is. For those of you who may think New York City is far north enough to be refreshingly cool for an August concert in Central Park- uh, usually not. I don’t know how hot it was this day, but with 10 million people and almost as many cars, planes and busses driving around, summer in NYC can get quite uncomfortable (although compared to a summer in Texas the weather and air probably seems refreshing) and a concert by the TH would likely not be their usual 80-90 minute set in those conditions. This sounds like a summer concert, a hot weather concert and a hot concert. Not just a
few good songs, they all sounded well played and it was a good setlist.

Do not sell this recording.
(not even for a pallet of punctured Dr. Peppers)

From the original uploader:
This is the first in a series of potential upgrades from longtime taper/trader, Dan Scripsema. First, a little history behind Dan and his archives, Dan began taping & trading in the mid 1970ís after noticing a taper at a Bob Seger show in 1976. He decided heíd purchase a deck himself and give it a go but the cheap deck he bought at the time did not give him the desired results. So, in 1978 , he upgraded to an Aiwa deck with an external mic which improved his quality, however, this rig was short lived after being caught in Kalamazoo, MI and the deck was damaged in the ensuing, as Dan describes it ìconfrontationî. Around this same time he began making contact with other traders and amassing a collection.

In 1979 he invested in a Sony D5 with a shotgun mic but with Bruce off the road at that time it wasnít until 1980 he was really able to put the new rig to use. It was during this time that he and some of his fellow trading buddies organized a national tape traders directory, he obtained vital information from fellow tapers/traders, categorized it and an early version of the tape traders tree was born. This set the group up for the early October start of the River tour. As the River tour took off, Dan covered most of the shows within driving distance of his home in West Michigan. The band of tapers which included such legendary tapers well known here, think Persic, Kivak, JEMS, etc., continued into the summer of 1981.

Before the Detroit shows in July of 1981 there was a gathering of the group at Danís house. From a personal aspect this was a very important gathering for Dan, the group bussed down to Detroit for the shows and it was on this bus trip that Dan met his wife of 33 years. Incidentally, Danís friend and fellow taper Lou Hill met his future wife on this same bus trip.

The collaboration continued for the Born In The USA Tour but as Tunnel Of Love hit the stores the responsibilities of family and fatherhood took over so everything was packed up and put away.

We fast forward to 2005 with things unchanged until a water pipe burst in Danís basement and much of his collection was lost. Luckily for us though, most of the Bruce archives were stored separately and survived.

That brings us to the second night in Chicago 1980, having to miss the first night due to work responsibilities a friend in Chicago hooked him up with tickets for the second night. He decided due to the venue size, not knowing where his seats were located and the fact he already had a friend taping that he would not be taping this show. The friend taping is the source of this 1st generation tape.

The two sold out October Chicago shows in the 4800 seat Uptown Theatre were part of a handful of early River tour theatre shows. These two shows prompted the addition of an arena show on November 20th due to the large number of fans who werenít able to get in to either show.

The early River shows donít seem to suffer from the same sound issues as the early Darkness shows, Clair Brothers Audio didnít appear to have any problems going from arenas to theatres and the sound is dialed in pretty quickly on this night, being the second night in the same venue couldnít have hurt either.
The show itself follows the basic set list for the first leg of the tour and is heavy in River material, the LP having just been released the day before. One slight addition to this show was an early set tour debut of ëFor Youí followed by a songs of despair mini set of ëDarkness On The Edge Of Towní, ëWreck On The Highwayí and ëFactoryí. Two nights later ëWreck On The Highwayí would be moved to its’ permanent place in the second set. Another tour premiere opens the second set in the high energy ëGood Rockiní Tonightí. Any personal recollections of the show have faded with the years.

Not only is this a nice material upgrade in sound, though far from perfect and should not be considered a top tier River show quality wise, but the between song edits found on the circulating versions are completely in tack here making for a much more pleasant and accurate listening experience. This in combination with the theatre setting gives this one a real ìyou are thereî feel absent from the previous releases of this show. The richness of Bruceís vocals comes through nicely, particularly on the slower songs. Samples provided.

At this point there are a handful of people we need to give some thanks to for helping to bring this show to you. First, earlmv for making the initial contact with Dan through Jungleland in regards to this specific show, earlmv put the word out that Dan wanted to get his archives into general circulation but someone was needed in the states to cut down on the cost. Next, oats1jvo picked up the ball with a follow up contact with Dan on how the best way to proceed would be. Oats1jvo put Dan and I in contact with each other and we are off and running. As with all my non JEMS postings, a huge thanks to E from JEMS for the lending of his backup DR-1 so more shows can continue to get into circulation.

And lastly, the biggest thanks to Dan for hanging onto his archives for all those years and his generosity in wanting to share it with us all. Please show your appreciation to all these folks in your comments.

Iím not sure whatís in store down the road but this is a worthy addition and upgrade to Bruceís River Tour legacy.

-Prove It All Night: 5 seconds patched with Recorder 2 (kshavo source)

Just a few days removed from the 33rd anniversary of Bruce’s River stop in Buffalo, JEMS is pleased to present an uncirculated third source recording of the show from the master tapes.

d.j.mackeck reached out earlier this year to report that his dad had recorded several Bruce shows between 1978 and 1984 in their hometown of Toronto, as well as cities within spitting distance like Detroit and Buffalo. He was kind enough to ship an initial batch of three masters, from which we made fresh transfers here at JEMS South.

The shows were recorded on a small portable recorder with built in-mic (likely a Toshiba or Sony, but memories have faded) in mono. D.J. shared how this particular night went down:

“My dad couldn’t make it to the Buffalo show, as he was going to be in the Bahamas during that time. So he gave his ticket and the task of recording the show to my uncle. My uncle was 18 at that time, and this was his first time seeing Springsteen. So he, another uncle, my aunt and my mother drove down from Toronto to the Memorial Auditorium.

When they were going in, security stopped my uncle because of the recorder. But he managed to sneak the recorder into his boot and got in through another gate. The rest is history! My dad kept the tapes along with other recordings he made. I came across the tapes, listened to them and sent them to JEMS. In my opinion, my uncle did a really good job of recording the show as far as getting all of the songs recorded and flipping the tapes over at the appropriate times. This is the first of my dad’s tapes to be transferred to digital form. He may have dubbed a copy for my uncle, but other than that, none of my dad’s tapes have ever been shared or traded.”

Uncle Mackeck did do a really solid job. There’s a remarkable lack of audience chatter or noise on the tape, and though the gear wasn’t state of the art, the recording is clear, relatively close and the best of the now three known Buffalo recordings. Uncle Mackeck only cut one song, on his first flip during “Prove It All Night,” which has been patched with Recorder 2 (Kshavo source).

The only material flaw in the new Buffalo recording was micro gaps. In 20-25 random spots across the three hours, the recorder cuts out momentarily leaving an audible gap. Having cut my teeth on a “basic handheld recorder” myself, I learned the hard way that they can be unreliable and if jostled or perhaps held in the wrong position, drop outs can occur.

On the Buffalo recording, the micro gaps were all well under a second in length, though absolutely noticeable. But happily for us, it isn’t 1980 but 2013 and audio technology has come a long way. Using iZotope RX and its magical “Spectral Repair” plug in, JEMS was able to repair the gaps in a manner that should make them audibly invisible to all but the most committed and headphone-wearing trainspotter. The software uses an extrapolation algorithm to pull information from both sides of the gap and fill in like spackle. It worked like a charm.

To take this one the last mile and provide the patching is our comrade and the unchallenged king of multiple source recordings, MJK5510. Thanks to him for final finishing and prepping.

And a big thanks to d.j. mackeck and his dad for loaning JEMS their masters, and to Uncle for recording the show so well in the first place.

There are more mackeck masters to come.
