OldNeumanntapr Notes-

The Cuesta College Auditorium was a neat old shoebox-type theater, built back during WWII on the old Cuesta campus which was part of the Camp San Luis California National Guard army base. (The New campus, built in the early 70s fronts Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway.) The auditorium looked like hell, with peeling paint and a leaky roof with a water-stained ceiling, but had really nice acoustics. Alas, it was deemed not worthy to retro-fit for earthquake standards, so it is slowing decaying and has been boarded up and condemned since the middle 2000s. It was sad, because Arlo remarked during the show how wonderful the sound was in the old theater. He said that they had played some brand new houses that didn’t sound half as good, and he implored the audience to try and preserve the old building. Sadly, that didn’t happen. I have recorded at the old auditorium a lot, and made my first recording there in the late 1980s when I was working part time for the Cuesta College Music Department while I was going to school. I gave a patch to my friend TaprRon at this Arlo show and he laughed, because it was the first time he’d gotten a patch at a stealth show! I got my ticket signed at this show, and My ex wife Nikki and I brought our daughter Lucy to see Arlo play. She was seven years old, and the last time that we saw Arlo, Nikki was pregnant with Lucy.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the last Bridge School Benefit that I recorded, and the first with the custom hat-loaded Nyquist Omnis. We had a seat this time, as compared to the first two years in 1991 and 1992 when I froze my behind off up on the lawn. Shoreline can get cold for the Bridge shows, especially because they are always in October or November. I had seen The Barenaked Ladies before, in Avila Beach, and I knew they were good and funny as well. I hadn’t ever seen The Wallflowers, R.E.M., Sarah McLachlan, or Phish before so that was a treat. I really liked the acoustic Phish show, much more than when I saw them play electric. They really seemed to be having fun during their set. I really enjoyed hearing Sarah and Phish sing the Cat Steven’s song ‘Sad Lisa’. I noticed that when REM played there was someone recording with large diaphragm microphones, which could have been AKG 414s. I’ve never seen that source circulate before however. My friends Dave and Brian were with me, and my ex-wife Nikki, at this show. I think Dave had a single seat down in the 100 sections, but Brian was seated next to me on my right. At the end of the Phish show I turned to Brian and said, “I was waiting for you to say, There’s that scruffy guy with the hat again”, which is what he said, referring to Neil Young, at a previous Bridge School Benefit.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
Taping was allowed at this show but I asked not to bring in my microphone stand, so the Nakamichi’s had to go on a T-Bar and be hand held throughout the show. The old Cuesta College Auditorium had such great acoustics, having been built on the old campus during World War Two.
Sadly, it was deemed not to be worth retrofitting for earthquake standards and is slowly falling into decay. I included a photo that i took of the building in 2018.
