Stripeydave says: This recording is dedicated to the Gil and Dave and the fantastic group of musicians who showed up. Thank you.

It is also dedicated to every single one of you who downloads this recording. You have excellent taste and are to be congratulated! 😉

There’s not much that I can say about this show that isn’t better said in the accompanying blog post of my newest music friend. But I’ll throw in two or three cents worth.

After all the Little Room shows, I didn’t know what to expect in the “big” room proper. Needless to say, when Dave and Gil bring their friends to play, everyone wins! A truly wonderful evening, the high points for me being the hauntingly beautiful reading of Neil Young’s “Birds” as sung by Harper Simon, and Willie Watson belting out John Lennon’s “Crippled Inside”. That being said, there were no low points and it was really hard to believe the number and variety of hugely talented musicians who kept dropping in to play. You’ll really want to grab this one. There is a small gap right before Love Hurts, but only stage banter was lost, not a drop of music (which was a small miracle in and of itself–you try to change tapes in a pin-drop-quiet theatre known for its EXTREME no-taping policy).

My feeling is that this music is too important to let drift off into the mists of time and is a wonderful historical document. I am pleased to be able to share it with you.

So keep your windows open please and try to upload as much as you download. I understand it may be tough on dialup, so if you can’t, no worries… just try to share it with as many people as you can by other methods, preferably through random acts of kindness.

One last thing, if you like this show then please go out and buy their albums. You won’t be disappointed. Support live Independent Music!
The life you save will be your own!

Last stop on the tour for me. Home town show recorded with DG just
like old times. Excellent sound but two flaws. During Pearly Queen
there was a bit of a arguement right behind me. Ended up wearing
part of a drink, but didnt let it affect the recording besides the
extra noise. The other problem is I missed the first bit of Low Spark
when the recorder has a memory error creating the second file. I had
to restart the unit and missed less than a minute. Oh well. So much
for the flawless recording.

  4. Split Decision
  5. Voodoo Chile
  6. Sweet Home Chicago < You Better Watch Yourself (encore)
  7. Drowning On Dry Land (encore)

Note: a few seconds of “Sweet Home Chicago” are missing because the recorder was in the process of saving the WAV file as it reached the maximum size limit.
Originally recorded in 48kHz, the maximum size of the WAV (which is 2Gb) was reached about 125 minute into the show (during the encore). The recorder saved the file, and continued recording in another WAV file. But, a little snippet was lost in the process. You’ll hear an abrupt edit in an other wise excellent, nearly error-free recording with minimal crowd distraction.

Eric Clapton – Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Vocals
Steve Winwood – Keyboards, Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Vocals
Chris Stainton – Keyboards
Willie Weeks – Electric Bass Guitar
Abe Laboriel, Jr. – Drums

Roy’s impression:

WOW – great show and one of the best concert tours of the year. The decision to bring on Buddy Guy seemed to have been spontaneous. After “Voodoo Chile,” Eric turned to Stevie and made a “cut it” gesture (hand across throat). Eric then declined the fresh guitar a stage hand had tried to offer (indicating to me that the stage crew was expecting the usual “Cocaine”) and promptly left the stage. The band left the stage for the usual false exit before the encore, and I noticed an additional amp being wheeled on and mic’ed.
An extra guest during an Eric Clapton show in Chicago can only mean one person – Buddy Guy, the Blues Mayor of the City. Buddy came on stage, and they tore the house down. Buddy played Stevie’s powder blue guitar, which was poorly mic’ed (and inaudible) for the first few minutes of the encore. After the fifteen-minute encore, Eric and Buddy left the stage rather abruptly. There was no final bow from the performers, as is common. Stevie Winwood merely walked off the stage without any acknowledgment from Clapton, and the house lights came on. I’m not sure how the egos of 60-something rock stars are, but I thought it was somewhat remarkable that Clapton seemed to be more interested in ending the show with his arms around Buddy Guy than waving a final farewell and bow with Steve Winwood.

Enjoy! Feedback is welcome.

Notes: The sound mix in the venue (in addition to being at a suprisingly low volume, even for Central Park Summerstage) was fair for this show. Yes there were a TON of people coming on and off the stage at all times, but that’s no excuse for muddy bass, muddy acoustic guitars, thin sounding organ, and drums that sometimes were WAY too loud. Amazingly this recording sounds really good [maybe even better than it sounded to my ears in the venue] (it starts out kinda iffy but improves as the show goes on), but I never felt like the mix was nearly as good as it could have been. I had been warned that even though Counting Crows allow open taping the venue tries to push you to the back, so I ran just above head height for most of the night (hence the random but luckily infrequent crowd chatter), but slowly slowly raised the stand as the night went on, so by the end I was running at a nice height above peoples’ heads. Wish the setlist could have had a few less Augustana songs and a few more Counting Crows songs, but what can you do? On the other hand, Michael Franti and Spearhead are always a treat, and the freewheeling nature of the interband jamming and large amount of cool covers makes up for it.

Enjoy this massive show!
