OldNeumanntapr Notes;
When I heard from my ‘partner-in-crime’ that his friend Brian’s wife couldn’t make the show I couldn’t pay him for the ticket fast enough. I love John Hiatt and especially enjoy hearing him play solo acoustic. As usual, John tells some funny stories between songs and does a few requests. There was one guy who kept asking for ‘Feels Like Rain’. The Fremont is a beautiful theater and has wonderful acoustics and it is always a real pleasure to see a live performance there. The Fremont was built in 1942 and was one of San Luis Obispo’s two art-deco movie theaters, the other being the Obispo, which was built in 1911 and burned to the ground in late 1975. Though the Fremont still has provisions for showing films, the SLO Film Festival is held there every spring, it has since been converted to a performing arts theater. Thanks so much to Flying M for his wonderful job at post production fairy dust. 🙂

Notes: The Stones! Amazing Mick, Keith and Ronnie are still doing it, and quite well. Cool to hear the new songs (which are really good IMHO) mixed in the the classics. Mick showed some good local knowledge (Levi’s 10th aniversary, Cow Palace, 49ers) so good on him. Recording is OK, but I’m sure better will appear here. Wanted to get it out there for the diehards.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
My wife is a huge Big Bad Voodoo Daddy fan, and when she told me that she was buying tickets for the Holiday Extravaganza I told her that I would be sure to do my best to see that it was archived. The Christopher Cohan Center is a beautiful performing arts theater on the Cal Poly university campus and it seats around 1,300 people and has curved interior walls to reduce audio standing waves. The acoustics are perfect, and we were upfront in the sixth row, almost center. Because of the close proximity to the stage I was getting a lot of direct sound from the horns which blended perfectly with the overhead PA vocals and the piano, bass, etc.
I hadn’t seen, or recorded, BBVD since the Fremont Theater show in SLO in 2016 so I was psyched to see them again. They are such an awesome big band with all the horns, and Scotty really steers the ship as the band leader and lead vocalist. I thought it was funny when Scotty told the crowd between songs that the biggest request that they received for the Holiday Extravaganza was to ‘Please don’t play just holiday music!’ Too funny! I was relieved to hear this because in the car on the way up I told my wife that I really wanted to hear Big Bad Voodoo Daddy classics like ‘Mr. Pinstripe Suit’, and she assured me that it would be, ‘Just Holiday songs’. All I can say now is ‘Nay’!!!! 😉 I loved hearing the band ‘swing’ through the holiday classics and the fact that they played some of their own classics was icing on the cake! I also really enjoyed hearing Scotty’s humorous stories, like when he thought that he had been pickpocketed by Santa, or when his young daughter requested her favorite holiday song. ‘All I want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth’ and he agreed to do it for her.

Thanks so much to Flying M for his post production ‘Fairy Dust’ that he does with his mad scientist computer programs. This recording really shines now because of his work.

John Hiatt – Acoustic Guitars, Harmonica, Vocals

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was another show that my friend Craig recorded that he wanted me to do post production. The Aladdin Theater is a nice intimate theater, according to Craig, and has a capacity of 600 people. Judging by the recordings that he has made there the acoustics sound really nice. Hiatt tells some funny stories, including one where he admits that he pees just before going onstage because otherwise ‘The last part of the show gets speeded up’. As an aging taper, I can relate to this, as I have to do the same just before getting to my seat!

There are no fades applied to this recording; if you choose to burn to CD, the above splits are just a suggestion.

Comments: This recording captures the first of two nights of the Rolling Stones in Chicago on the last dates of the U.S. leg of their “Hackney Diamonds” tour. Great show, with a good mix of material from the 1960s through today, including four songs from their most recent album. Sound quality is pretty good but not great; I was in the front row of the section right off the floor at roughly the 50-yard line; as a result, there was minimal crowd interference (there was nobody in front of me) but I wasn’t as close to the PA as I would have liked. Overall I was happy with this recording, and in the absence of other sources I would imagine that most Stones fans will be too.

In terms of performances, the Stones are always entertaining at this stage of their career, although there were some noticeable flubs. Listen to the opening notes of “Start Me Up” and “Satisfaction” to hear some clunkers from Keith. It’s not the 1970s anymore but this band still delivers better than most rock bands a generation (or more) younger. Overall an enjoyable recording.

21 (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

Had tickets for the 2020 gig, and then… you know…
Wasn’t going to bother attending this one for a variety of reasons. Death of Charlie Watts, tickets were even more expensive than the original booking, and general dislike (to put it lightly) of stadium shows, just to name a few.

Neil Young was due in town a couple weeks after this, but unfortunately cancelled. Had tickets to both shows booked at Deer Lake Park. The money was refunded right away (much unlike Stones 2020) and all of a sudden the Stones were in town. The day of the show I found a secondary market ticket for well below face value and ended up paying about the same price as one of those Neil Young tickets.

Met up with some pals before hand for a few pints. We entered the venue during the opening act, Ghost Hounds. As soon as I got to my seat, I remembered why I never go to these kind of shows. Brutal. Ghost Hounds didn’t do it for me, generic boring American rock music. I wonder how much their buy-on was for this tour… Anyway, I used their last few songs as a record-level check to make sure I was all set for the main attraction (included here as a bonus).

The setlist was fairly ideal for a first and likely only time seeing the Stones. The overall experience left something to be desired. I never felt like I was really there but rather experiencing the show second or third hand, as if I was watching TV from across the street through binoculars or something. I’ve felt more like I was at a show while peering over a festival fence from a distance.

After being treated and sanitized, the recording sounds 150x better than it did at the show. Plus you don’t have to sit on a harsh plastic chair and smell my neighbour’s cheap hotel fatty acid soap aroma. Sit back in your favourite seat or listen to it on the go.
