Notes from original uploader
13 years ago I reiceved a DAT from KEN DIXON (Ohio) with this nice show (don’t remember if he was the taper or if he have made a DAT clone for me). I transfered in 1995 the DAT on CD-AUDIO with my standalone PIONEER PDR-05 (connected with an optical cable), so This transfer was just maded (this time a rip from CD-AUDIO in secure speedy with EAC). Talking with ROEL, he have suggested to upload it as in the past this show (only partial, so not complete) was treeded (..or seeded ??) in low quality sound.
As this show contain some gems as “Stringman” and a rare duets with Simon & Garfunkel (on Helpless and Only love can Break your Heart) and a really emotional “Sound of Silence” with Neil on solo electric guitar, I’m happy to share this really particular show, specially in this quality.

(2)A video of Friend Of The Devil through the end of the show also exists.
EAC notes: from original uploader I received this show as 2 discs, with the break between The Thrill is Gone and Old Rockin’ Chair. This made no sense to me since you can fit each set onto it’s own discs, so that’s how I have the SHNs numbered. Disc 1 had slight (about 1 second) diginoise at about 2:28 of track 1 when I received it. Extracted, shortened, and seeded by eric walker (deadhead@walkernetworks.com)

From the uploader:
Here’s the deal… There are multiple versions of this 12/31/73 show in circulation. The most common (and the only one that I’ve seen) is supposed to be from the Pre FM reels (which were most likely damaged, keep reading). On the heavily circulated version there were numerous flaws, most were either digital noise or clipping. A new transfer was just done from a Reel To Reel FM Master. This new FM master did not have any of the flaws that were present on the common “Pre FM” version, but FM Master was of slightly lesser quality.
The solution? Small portions of the new FM master were spliced into the higher quality version when there was digital noise, clipping, etc. Those defects have now been eliminated. The splicing was done well, at most points it’s unnoticeable, but there were a couple of splices that didn’t line up perfectly, one of those would be the splice that provides the intro to Liz Reed. Either way, this show sounds much better than it did before, and it’s the best source I know of to be in circulation.
Here are some of the other edits that were done… There was digital noise in some of Bill Graham’s band intro, this was spliced in OK from the other copy. Various count-ins were slightly clipped, but are now spliced in seamlessly. These are usually when KSAN DJ’s talk, those short station ID’s have also been put back in. The KSAN announcer’s (Tom Donahue) count-in at New Year’s was similarly clipped, this has been restored, clipped notes at the beginning of Jessica have also been restored. There were many other additional edits, but you get the picture.

From the taper:
So here’s an interesting one. Alex Chilton on his High Priest tour in 1987. The theater at the Variety Arts Center must have had a capacity of 1000+ people but there couldn’t have been 100 at this show. I literally was able to place my cassette recorder on the edge of the stage at the start of the set. Problem with that was it picked some pounding on the stage as well as quite a bit of drunken chatter (including the occasional show narration from someone who apparently lost their job that day). It was the night before Halloween and everyone was well lubricated.
At the end of the show, I was able to walk on stage, into the wings and chat with Alex. An atttactive young lady came into view and Alex cocks an eyebrow and says “Thanks for coming, I have to take care of some business.”
OK audience recording and Alex’s band is really good…a full horn section joins a few songs in. Enjoyable listen if you’re a fan.
Warning: at minute 5 of Dalai Lama there is tape damage that lasts for several minutes until the end of the song.
Enjoy!

EDITING NOTES:
This full length live recording from early 1978 is a welcome addition to any Ramones fan and hopefully as a welcome gift, I offer this remastered effort to those interested in taking it. The recording was a pleasure to work with as the sound quality, including mix elements and overall amplitude, is generally the same throughout. Thus, I applied virtually the same edits to each track. These edits consist of no more than simple frequency adjustments, cutting out some noisy sections in the midrange frequency register from about 200Hz to 1100Hz. Specific amplitude adjustments were made to each frequency range in order to achieve a more clear and balanced representation of the spectrum. Each track was then increased 4.5 dB to reverse the quietening affect of the frequency adjustments. I hope what results is a better sounding recording of a typical, full blast classic Ramones performance. GABBA GABBA HEY!!! HERE ARE THE RAMONES!!! ENJOY!!

Notes: There is 1 second of digi-noise at 2:07 during Me And Bobby McGee. The very end of “All Of Me” was abruptly cut on the DAT, so I faded it out. No music is missing. The beginning of “Stardust” is missing and fades in on the DAT, presumably due to the taper switching from the mic and plugging back into the soundboard.
