Notes for set 1

This set is taken from the two-night stand David Bowie gave at the Montreal Forum in 1983. Each show during this Serious Moonlight tour had two sets with a 20-minute intermission, resulting in over 90 two hour-plus concerts in 15 countries in 1983.
After a period of releasing dark, more experimental albums such as Low, The Lodger and Scary Monsters in collaboration with Brian Eno while living as a single man in Berlin, Germany, a string of only semi-successful commercial hits and battling a well-publicized cocaine addiction, David Bowie overcame his demons and teamed up with Chic member and producer, Nile Rodgers. The result was 1983’s Let’s Dance, a commercial record that most critics continue to regard as one of his best.
Smiling and obviously happy with his newfound artistic muse, David Bowie greeted a sold out Montreal forum on this night, and launched into a brilliant show full of both hits from Let’s Dance and some of the more radio-friendly tracks he had done during his Berlin sojourn. Fronting a killer band, Bowie began the evening with three lesser known hits – “Look Back In Anger,” “Breaking Glass” and “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” – before launching into “Rebel, Rebel,” his 1974 hit single from the Diamond Dogs LP. This tour reunited Bowie with guitarist Earl Slick, who had replaced Mick Ronson for the Diamond Dogs recording sessions. Slick delivers the rock edge that had been missing from his music made during the Berlin years. The band is propelled by former Chic/Power Station drummer Tony Thompson, who, along with members of the Tower of Power horn section, helps make this one of the best backing bands in his long musical career.
The majority of the set is essentially a collection of Bowie hits that includes “Heroes,” “Life on Mars?,” “Fashion” and his two big radio hits from Let’s Dance: the title track and the ever infectious “China Girl.” Other highlights include Bowie’s version of the classic 1967 Pretty Things hit, “Sorrow,” (which he originally recorded for 1973’s Pin Ups record) and his modern re-make of The Velvet Underground classic “White Light, White Heat.”

Notes on set II

Actually the second half of a single show, this recording begins with Bowie offering a compelling version of “Station To Station,” the title track from the 1976 album of the same name, to open the second set. From the moment he sings the initial line: “…the return of the thin white duke…” the crowd is all his – on their feet, and reveling in the homecoming. From there, things only escalate. He then launches into a powerful version of “Cracked Actor,” a tune from 1973’s Aladdin Sane, drawing a special roar from the audience when he delivers the controversial line “…suck baby suck, give me your head…” Leading a monumental, 10-piece band, he grooves through a collection of mostly hit songs that includes “Space Oddity” (his first hit single), “Young Americans” (his first dance hit), “Fame” (which he co-wrote with John Lennon) and a trio of all-out rockers: “Cat People,” “Putting Out Fire” and “Jean Genie.” This tour only featured one song from his legendary Ziggy Stardust LP, “Star” – but it’s a memorable one, nonetheless. Noticeably absent from the show was the usual Bowie show-stopper “Suffragette City,” but he more than makes up for it with what would have been, back then, a mix of classic and modern Bowie. Among the other highlights are a version of “Modern Love,” which kicks like a mule, and a spunky version of The Who classic “I Can’t Explain.” A must for all Bowie fans; proof that, no matter what the persona, the man could rock out with the best of them.

LosslessBob entry: LB-2650. has tv band at 16k for dylan part but not the band part; background talking d2t1, d2t5; good sound [C+] has some occasional very light background popping surface like noise on dylan part; discontinuity pop d1t6 3:52, d1t14 0:20, 3:12, 3:13, d2t9 0:14 and probably more scattered; analog drop d1t9 1:44, d1t15 3:25; lots of digi-pops on d2t1 and d2t2; drop d1t7 0:00

Fix of LB-2650: WAV > “The Weight” (the Band) and “Forever Young” (Dylan & The Band) were at the end of disc two fileset. They are now moved to the correct order as per setlist. Track transition cannot verify their correct order because “The weight” [D2T09] seems to fade in with a slight clip on source [“The Shape I’m in” preceding it, is slightly end clipped]. Also, it is probably the last song of The Band’s second set and there is usually an edit between The Band’s set and Dylan’s set following it. “Forever Young” [D2T10] starts with taper (?) talking about “give ma a hand [..] missing one song” (?) which might also explain the edit at its start. Track transition from “Forever Young” [D2T10] into “Something There Is About You” [D2T11] is not seemless > Cool Edit Pro 2.1. Applied “Click/pop eliminator Preset: Hiss + lots of clicks” to eliminate many hardly audible minor ticks across (see [1]DFF.pdf). The process did not produced any artifact noise after pop elimination nor apply any sound mastering. The option also cleaned index clicks present on the FLACs (see [2]DFF.pdf) > Wave Repair 4.9.3 to manually removed micro gaps at indexes and remaining clicks at begining of “Just Like A Woman”. Fixed analog drop on d1t15 at 3:25+27. Analog drop d1t9 at 1:44 left unaltered. Remaining flaws (see [2]DFF) are music/background related > FLAC, sector align.

From the taper:

This was Superbowl Sunday and downtown Vancouver Granville Street was absolutely crawling with people – of every ilk. It seems I got to meet a lot of them having arrived very early to be first in line and be able to find the time to speak with the house manager at the Orpheum so they’re comfortable with my gear and what I’m doing. Thankfully, Wilco, unlike many other taper friendly bands, were very good at notifying the venue of their policies.

I managed to set up in my usual Orpheum spot with the blessing of the house manager Greg, who I’m always grateful to see working any night I’m there taping. He’s professional and polite and has helped me get my gear in on several occasions so kudos and huge thanks go out to him.

The show itself was a true joy and delight. Great lights & effects without going overboard and as I previously mentioned, the sound was stunning. The performance itself was top notch as these boys were as tight as I’ve ever seen any band. The crowd was a little bit rowdy for the first few songs but quickly settled in for the ride. The band smoothly transitioned from one song to the other without the slightest hesitation and Jeff’s banter was cute but short & sweet. At one point towards the end of the show, someone threw some yellow referee flags on stage and you’ll hear Jeff joke about them. For more details of the performance, I direct you to the several included screen captures of online reviews from that night. Although they almost all mention some couple fighting during the performance, thankfully, I neither saw nor captured it on my recording. The band did not seem affected either.

Recording location: DFC – mics placed over dress circle (lowest) balcony rail in A/B configuration 75cm’s apart
Sound Quality: SUP, A+, 10/10 – I really lucked out with the sound here and got a capture as good as any I’ve ever gotten. I could not have pulled a better capture with and reached the absolute limitations of my equipment. There is clear stereo separation as the house mix itself was in stereo. From the gentlest and quietest notes right up to the loudest cacophony of instruments; it’s all here as true as it gets. The sound that night , thanks to FOH engineer Stan Doty, was surprisingly clear and of the highest quality. The placement of my mics over the edge protected them from the closest talkers and clappers but still got enough of the audience sounds to remind you that this is a live show.

From the original uploader

This CD came out in 2000 on the Tarantura 2000 label out of Tokyo. It’s a version the famous Zeppelin release ‘Pb’ or ‘Pure Blues’ which has been released many many times on vinyl and CD.
There have been many debated regarding where the original source came from, one theory is that it was a radio broadcast, the other is that it is a raw soundboard tape
The big difference with this release is that it’s the first time a TAPE source has been located and used.
All previous releases have come from vinyl sources.
The producers of this release aquired a 2nd gen tape from an American collector who had the tape stored away since 1983
It was then speed corrected and 32-bit Re-Mastered by CoolMixMan aka Blackdog.
