OldNeumanntapr Notes:
These were my last Dead shows that I recorded at Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, and from what I remember, it was the last time that the Dead would play at Kaiser. They were banned from the venue because of unruly Deadheads using the neighbor’s yards for bathrooms and also clogging the streets because Kaiser didn’t have good parking facilities. We always parked on the street bordering Peralta Park, or in the little cul-de-sac to the south of the convention center. I saw my first Grateful Dead concert at Kaiser on February 9 1986 and will never forget it.

These were the last two shows that I recorded with the Superscope EC 7 Cardioids.

Additional Notes [Sept 2024];
I remember that there were circular ramps at the corners of the building that we would run up on our way to the tapers section in the balcony. It was always a special place to see, and record, the Dead and from what I hear the convention center has been closed for a while because it is need for expensive renovations. Apparently the building, which held 7,000 people and opened in 1915, was closed in 2006 and is currently being renovated. The following paragraph was taken from an online article about the Kaiser renovations, Sept 9, 2022;

“During its golden era, the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center hosted luminaries from the musical and political worlds. Elvis Presley, James Brown, and the Grateful Dead were among the artists that performed at the arena. World political figures like Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, and others also graced its hallways. In 1918, the auditorium served as a makeshift hospital during the Spanish flu pandemic. It served a less honorable purpose in 1924 when over 800 Klu Klux Klan members gathered inside the arena for a cross-burning ceremony. More recently, in 2012, Occupy Oakland protesters attempted to take over the building during its “move-in day,” which resulted in a violent clash with police and the arrest of over 400 people. This past March, a demolition crew discovered a mummified body inside one of the walls.”

Two photos from the article;
https://oaklandside.org/2022/09/09/tour-of-the-renamed-oakland-civic/ are reproduced here. The first is a photo of a backstage light switch that the Grateful Dead crew wrote on at one point in time, and the other is of the current renovations shot from the center of the balcony where the tapers section was. I remember this view really well!

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
I always liked the Kaiser Convention Center, mostly because it was smaller than the Oakland Coliseum Arena. I saw my very first Dead show at Henry J. Kaiser on Feb 9 1986, and we sat in the tapers section by accident because I wanted to be in the balcony and not on the floor dealing with standing room only. (I spent half of my time at my first show staring at the tapers and the other half watching the band. Afterward I understood the phrase, ‘When you absolutely have to be there, every night!’) I knew from my first show that I wanted to be a taper.

I think it was one of these two shows that, as we were running in through the doors, another taper exclaimed to his friend that ‘We fulfill a Valuable archival purpose!’ I never forgot that because it rang true with me. It’s so amazing to go through my early masters all these years later because if a picture is worth a thousand words, an audio recording is a complete volume!

I remember thinking that it was odd that Jerry left the stage for the jam after ‘Gimme Some Lovin’.

I think it was one of these two shows that, as we were running in through the doors, another taper exclaimed to his friend that ‘We fulfill a Valuable archival purpose!’ I never forgot that because it rang true with me. OldNeumanntapr Notes:

  1. The segue from Big RxR Blues > Promised Land has a tape flip at the very beginning of Promised Land. A couple of words are lost. It looked like others had that same problem. I couldn’t flip sooner because Box Of Rain segued into Big RR Blues. I got the ‘Let Phil Sing’ chant recorded too.
  2. Scarlet starts right off. I guess I didn’t record the tuning before the set.
  3. In those days, I was starting the second set on the back side of the 1st tape (after the 1st set closure.) So there is a flip after He’s Gone with the jam into Drums starting the third disc.
  4. The encore is right after a tape flip, so there is a cut there.

Additional Notes Dec. 30 2016:
Wow! I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since I recorded this show. I look back and laugh, because I had no idea what I was doing then! In those days I paused the deck between songs in the first set and started the second set at the end of the first set tape, not realizing that would give me one extra tape flip. The TC-153SD was a good deck and I still have it, in its original box in the closet. I remember that it was cold in Oakland that night and the ‘Cold Rain’ opener was not that surprising. I was actually hoping for it. This was the first Kaiser show that I recorded.
