Tracking note: I tracked this recording with multiple “deadspace/tuning” tracks which by in large contain chatter/crowd/tuning. If you would like to avoid listening to the chatter and fit this otherwise 83 minute recording onto 80 minute CDR of music, eliminate a few of these deadspaces and you are set.

I just used the Right channel for both, EQed it, A touch of verb to make stereo, and i corrected the dropout areas of the tape. I raised the frequencies that weren’t distorted and tried to lower slightly the ones that were distorted. Just a slightly better listen than the original (included for your discernment).

NOTES:
Good Points:
A fine audience recording especially given it’s age, of an excellent performance from circa 1978 [exact date unknown]. You really get the feeling Tom is enjoying himself here …….

Bad Points:
The show is alas incomplete 🙁 There are quite a few cuts present where music is lost & it would appear that it was indeed that way on the master. You can hear the dreaded short whurr of the recorder button being depressed on more than one occasion.
– Track 01 has a cut at approx 13:29secs [the remainder of Burma Shave was originally tracked seperately]
– There is a cut where the end of ”Red Shoes” [track 05] & the beginning of ”Annie’s Back In Town” [track 06] is missing.
– There is a fade at the the end of track 07 although it would appear that no music is lost
– Following on from ‘Silent Night”, track 09, ”Christmas Card From A Hooker…….” is cut after 0:55secs appx

On top of all of the above, this show was in quite a mess when i received it as it was also tracked poorly & had numerous blank/dead segments, Believe it or not, it’s presented here in a better state than it was but the imperfections [cuts] that are irrepairable, date back i believe to some smokey evening in California ’78.

From listening to the show it was obvious the pitch was a tad slow. Using SBD MR recordings from this era as a reference (specifically Boogie On Reggae Woman and Harder They Come), the pitch was empirically determined to be 0.8 semitone flat which was corrected prior to tracking using Soundforge 6. Relatively hissy recording.

In order to facilitate not burning a 1 song second disc while maintaining the show in its entirity for those who are helping the audio and physical environment by directly listening digitally to the files and not burning a gazillion audio discs that will be basically trash in a less than a decade, I tracked the show so that odd #’d tracks are the actual songs while the even # tracks are the crowd/dead space between songs. If you want to avoid burning a single song (Harder They Come) second disc and don’t mind on missing out on all the crowd chatter, you can burn just the odd #’d tracks and it will fit on a 80 minute disc. If you want to soak up that hissy ’74 inbetween audience vibe directly off your pc, you are set too.
