Guy Budd is a local San Luis Obispo County blues musician. I’ve recorded him many times over the years and he is always a fine player. He would always wear his pith helmet onstage. I shot photos with my Nikon F4S and 80-200 f/2.8AF Nikkor Zoom lens, and used one of my pics for the cover shot.

Thanks to Guy Budd, the Little Feat sound crew, and the staff at Pozo Saloon for allowing me to plug into the board.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was my second of the two little Feat shows that I recorded. I liked the way that they allowed soundboard access in those days. When I recorded them at Avila Beach two years previously, I plugged directly into the XLR outputs of the board, but for this show the band put out a patch bay and I plugged into the XLR outputs. I was the only deck running for this show off the board. I brought my Nikon F4S and 80-200 f/2.8 AF Nikkor and did photos of the show and used one of Fred for the front cover. Thanks, as always, to my friend Dave for all his help.

Thanks to the Little Feat sound crew, and the staff at Pozo Saloon for allowing me to plug into the board.

The Pozo Saloon is over 100 years old, and was a stage stop in the early days. The concerts are held in a big field out behind the saloon. The saloon is out in the middle of nowhere, miles from the 101 freeway. Supposedly, when Bruce Springsteen wanted to meet with his sax player, Clarence Clemons, in an out-of-the-way place, they picked the Pozo Saloon because it was midway between southern and northern CA. As the story went, they talked for hours and no one recognized them!

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This show was billed as the ‘Pozo Summer Festival’, and included The Chambers Brothers, Peter Rowan And The Free Mexican Airforce, and Richie Havens who headlined. The Pozo Saloon is a 100+ year old stage stop out in the middle of nowhere. The concerts are always held in the back of the saloon, in the field. This was back when the ‘stage’ was the back porch of the saloon, and you had to deal with trees that interrupted the sight lines. Since then there has been a larger stage built further back from the saloon in the pasture where the concerts are currently held. I’d never seen Peter Rowan or Richie Havens before. This was the show that where I found out that John Kahn, Jerry Garcia’s bass player in the Garcia Band, had passed away. Peter Rowan mentioned it between songs and it came as a shock to me, because I hadn’t realized that he’d died. I also recorded Richie Havens, along with the song ‘The Time Has Come’ from the Chambers Brothers. The Havens set is good, but I never could find the snippet of the Chambers Brothers, as it got lost long ago.

Dan Hicks And The Acoustic Warriors, And Iron Butterfly Opened (Middle Billed)

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
I recorded several shows at the old Pozo Saloon, which is a 100-year old former stage coach stop miles in the country east of Santa Margarita. In the early days of concerts there, the ‘stage’ was nothing more than the back porch of the saloon, but by this show the promoters had built a larger stage back that sat in the back pasture behind the saloon. There were several large trees that obscured site lines when the stage was on the back porch so to get a good spot to see the bands you had to get there early and get upfront.

This was the show that Dan Hicks and the Acoustic Warriors opened. I was always asking Bill, the house soundman, for permission to record from the board, and he always gave me the same answer. ‘They’ll NEVER go for it.’ When I asked him to please ask Dan Hicks, Bill came back shocked and said, ‘He said yes!’ So, I have a board recording through Bill’s Panasonic SC-3700 DAT of the Dan Hicks opener, but I had to stealth record the other sets in the audience.

I was using the Nyquist hat for all my stealth shows in the 1990s, before i purchased my Neumann microphones. The Nyquist’s were custom-loaded capsules in a baseball-type hat, built by an out of work electrical engineer in Denver. They had pretty good sound but lacked decent bass response, and had a tendency to distort if the PA was really loud. A few of my recordings with this set up have extreme brick-walling and could not be salvaged, so I learned to keep the levels down in those situations.

Dan Hicks And The Acoustic Warriors, Followed By Iron Butterfly, Opened For John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-

My friend Bill Gaines, the soundman, was amazed that Dan Hicks agreed to a board patch. I would ask Bill time and time again to ask the band if I could patch in. He would always look at me like I was an idiot, but I told him that it never hurts to ask. Bill came back from backstage and looked shocked. He told me that Dan said yes, so I used Bill’s Panasonic SV-3700 DAT recorder because it was already plugged in to the effects rack, and left my D7 and microphones in my bag and ready for John Mayall’s set. I’ve seen a lot of shows at the old Pozo Saloon. It is a 100 + year-old Stage stop out in the middle of Nowhere, about 16 miles from Santa Margarita. The shows are always outdoors on the lawn in the back of the saloon. In later years they built a big stage in the pasture out back, but in the old days the shows were held on the back porch of the saloon. Supposedly, when Bruce Springsteen wanted to meet with Clarence Clemons, Bruce suggested the Pozo Saloon because it was midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The story I heard was that they sat and talked for hours and not a soul recognized them!

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was another show at the Pozo Saloon, a 100+ year-old stage stop out in the country south east of Santa Margarita, CA. Bill Gaines was doing sound and I would always ask him to ask the artists if we could do a board recording. Most of the time the answer was no, but not always. In the early 90s the stage was the back porch of the saloon, and there were a lot of trees that got in the way of sight lines. In the mid to late 90s they built a big stage out back in the pasture. The Pozo Saloon is so remote there is a story circulating that when Bruce Springsteen needed a place to confer with Clarence Clemons Bruce chose the Pozo Saloon as an out of the way place where no one would recognize them. Apparently no one did! My recording was uploaded to the Live Music Archive by Brad Foster a number of years ago but he used EAC to extract the trade disc that I sent him.

Country Joe McDonald – Acoustic Guitar, Vocals
Opened For Maria Muldaur, And Also The New Riders Of The Purple Sage

OldNeumanntapr Notes-

This was one of the first shows at Pozo that I went to, back when the ‘stage’ was nothing more than the pack porch of the saloon. The Pozo Saloon is a 100+ year old former stage coach stop, located out in the country, about 20 miles from the main highway north east of San Luis Obispo, CA. They hold concerts there in the field behind the saloon regularly.

In later years the owners of the Pozo Saloon would build an elaborate stage further back in the pasture and thus be able to bring in larger acts with more people and eliminate the blocked sight lines caused from the various tall trees directly behind the saloon. But in the early 90’s the stage was nothing more than the Saloon’s back porch. The trees out back obscured site lines to the ‘stage’, unless you were close up. This particular show was on a Sunday morning. I think it was a much more intimate setting in the old days, with the smaller stage and fewer people.

Because the Pozo Saloon is out in the middle of nowhere, supposedly when Bruce Springsteen needed a remote location midway between the bay area and San Diego to meet with Clarence Clemons, he decided Pozo was the place. Apparently No one even recognized them!

Country Joe opened for Maria Muldaur and NRPS. It was a shame that so many people talked through Joe’s set. I had my recording equipment hidden in a back pack at the foot of my lawn chair. We were in the front row, not too far from the right PA stack. Being that it was broad daylight, it was hard to hide the microphones so I had them low in the backpack in front of the speakers with just the capsules protruding. Thanks to Dennis Orr for the Sound Forge / iZotope / EQ Post Production.
