Notes:
The goal of this collection is to round up one-offs, rarities, novel arrangements, and lesser-known tracks from Bob Dylan’s 1976 tour. The idea is that a fan whose 1976 collection consists of the 4-5 common soundboards from this year (New Orleans, Fort Worth, etc.) can grab this compilation and have most of the unique songs that don’t appear on any of those more famous bootlegs. It’s not a truly complete collection of ’76 rarities, but (still being a CD guy) I found in preparing the compilation that tightening it up to a packed single disc made for a more satisfying listening journey than stretching it out to two shorter ones. So, missing are a couple of one-offs which got the ax due to sound quality (“Most Likely You Go Your Way” from 4/22 and “One Of Us Must Know” from 5/19/76), and a handful of other songs that were technically rarities for ’76 but were setlist regulars in ’75 and didn’t sound different enough in their ’76 iterations to merit bumping anything here.

What’s left is an 80-minute program of prime, if somewhat stealth, ’76 Rolling Thunder Revue. Some of these performances are well-documented on others’ compilations; some were surprises to me and hopefully will be to you, too. I have made no changes to these recordings, apart from adding fade-ins and -outs for continuity. Thanks as ever to the original tapers, the uploaders who’ve helped preserve the legacy of the recordings, and to the Bobserve website for making it so easy to sort songs by year and by times played — it made tracking these down way easier than combing endlessly through setlists (fun as that always was)!

chose a Bob Dylan song as their theme song. A song called “Chimes
Of Freedom”. This year, to my great surprise, they chose another
Bob Dylan song. Actually that one was last year, “I Shall Be Released”
was the one they chose this year. Anyway, I guess they’re gonna have
another Amnesty Tour next year. I think they’re gonna use another Bob Dylan song called “Jokerman”. But I’m trying to get them to change their mind, trying to get them to use this one. (before In The Garden ).

I can’t recall the last time I saw Dylan in person. It was either at Mac Court in Eugene, OR or opening for Phil Lesh in Medford, OR back in the late 90’s.

It was a new experience to hear the current Dylan incarnation.

The only thing that marred the experience was incessant talking by other concert goers.

Enough of a rant 🙂

The start of both set 1 and set 2 caught me off guard. We were at the scheduled start time of the concert when all of a sudden, we heard what sounded like the tones of early NBC TV Network. The lights went
down and we heard some guitar playing as an intro which led immediately into Bob coming onstage and the beginning of the first song.

This caused many folks to scramble to their seats and cause a bit of commotion in the audience as they did so.

A ‘rough transfer’ version of this recording was circulated to a limited circle of Bob collectors in May 2011 on the understanding that it not be torrented or further shared.
This version supersedes that earlier one. It is a new transfer made with a superior sound card and noticeably improved sound quality to the ‘rough transfer’ version.

Concert details
This concert occurred on the 6th day of the 2011 Bluesfest.
Bob played from 9 – 10.30pm and was the final act of the festival.
Australian acts Gurrumul and Paul Kelly peformed before Bob.
The MoJo Stage was the largest of the 5 stages at this festival.
It was a massive circus tent providing shelter from the storm outside (see below).

The Byron Bay Bluesfest 2011 was held on the Tyagarah Tee Tree Farm which is located 11 kilometres north of Byron Bay in northern New South Wales. The festival site can accommodate 17,500 festival visitors per day and 6,500 campers.

The site is a fully operational Tea Tree Farm for most of the year and turns into the Bluesfest site for a few weeks before, during and after the Easter Festival weekend each year.

Information about how this concert came about
The 6th day of the festival (and Bob’s second show) was added to the original 5 day schedule after a number of events.

Firstly, day 5 sold out quickly and the promoter stated that there was a high demand for a second Bob show at the festival. This could only occur if the festival was extended due to Bob having prior shows in Melbourne and Wollongong during the earlier days of the festival.
An application to the Byron Shire Council was submitted and it was advised that this would be considered at the council’s next meeting which was scheduled for 10 February 2011.

The festival promoter stated that he needed a decision sooner than that and demanded that all councillors and council staff return from their Christmas holidays in order to decide on his application. The promoter then threated to take the councillors to court if they did not do so.

Several returned from oversees holidays in order a attend a newly convened ‘Extraordinary meeting’ which was held on 6 January 2011.

The promoter praised the council’s decision to approve his application and advised that he would announce details of the extra 6th day after he had returned from his oversees holiday.

Details of the 6th day were then announced on 1 February 2011.
The added half-day program saw a much smaller turn-out than expected and the day was marred by prolonged torrential rain.
The festival site became a muddy bog difficult to walk through and the smell of raw sewage permeated. In particular the area where food vendors were set up near the entrance to the Mojo Stage turned into a stinking swamp that made it hugely difficult for any hungry punters to actually stand in this area without sinking into the smelly mud.
No provisions such as covering the mud with straw or hay were made by the promoter.

This recording inaugurates the NET Tapers Series. If you have a recording from this date, you can easily tell whether it is this one. First of all, on the first track, “Jokerman”, after some fairly obnoxious screeching, the taper (apparently) says very clerarly:
“Shut up!” Luckily, except for a brief time at the end of the track, the screeching stops and the audience noise is not an issue in the rest of the show. Second, this recording has four tracks tacked onto the end of the show (according to Olof’s setlist). If anyone can help identify the source for these tracks, I would appreciate clarification on this matter. (Even if you do have a copy of this recording, if you have it from a high-gen source, the sound quality may not becomparable to this off-master one.)
