Notes:
In October ’99, at Swindon, Van issued his patented, disingenuous call for requests. A member of the audience piped up, to whom Van incredulously replied, “Mona Lisa??” Longtime fans could not have found this request so far off the mark. During the terrific fall ’86 tour of England, at least a handful of shows closed with this tender Nat King Cole standard. This selection is a fine representation of those wonderful autumn eves. No Guru material added a new dimension to an act that some feel, by the end of ’85, had grown somewhat stale. Highlights include “Tir Na Nog”, “Here Comes The Knight”, and the fantastic “Rave On” combo – which segues into a drawn-out, funky version of “Satisfied”. All this, and a lovely “Mona Lisa” to cap it off make Bristol ’86 a standout set.

Good audience recording, exact lineage unknown.
New transfer, mastering, editing, from first generation tape: June 2005.

Caveat: “Whenever God Shines His Light” is missing on source tape. Only a 18 sec snippet was recorded. To get a seamless show we cut this part. It’s placed at the end of disc two as a “bonus track”.
So you have three possibilities to burn the CD:
For completitst: replace the snippet between track 6 and 7. so you’ll get it like it was on the source tape, no notes missing.
For pure audio freaks: leave the snippet out in the burning process.
All others: burn it like it is 😉

After so much preparation it was a big letdown to have hardware failures resulting in not capturing almost half the show, but the audio we do have is all that seems to have surfaced so far from Van’s 2019 Las Vegas Residency.

I didn’t realize that the Shure Motiv app had stopped recording until the encore. The beginning of the intro to Brown Eyed Girl is missing but doesn’t kill the experience. I took a pretty light touch in Audacity, just taming a few applause rounds and fixing some random clipping.

Shure MV88 users beware – you might want to open the app every so often to make sure it’s still capturing.

Van Morrison – Choppin’ Wood

Van Morrison
Choppin’ Wood
(Unreleased Album)

In 2000, Morrison released a collaboration with Linda Gail Lewis (Jerry Lee Lewis’s sister), You Win Again. Another side project, this time focusing on R&B and country-and-western standards, Lewis proved to be an excellent duet partner, and the project set the stage for Morrison’s next album, Choppin’ Wood. Clinton Heylin’s book, Can You Feel the Silence?, discusses this period in great detail, but due to legal issues surrounding the matter, not everything could be divulged. By the end of 2000, the album was essentially finished when Lewis and Morrison had a falling out.

As a result, Morrison went back and re-recorded and/or remixed most of the tracks, removing Lewis’s contributions in the process. A few songs were removed from the final running order and more new ones were added in. The result was released in 2002 as Down the Road. Arguably Morrison’s strongest release since Avalon Sunset, Heylin contends that the original version, Choppin’ Wood, would have been a true return to form. It is doubtful if that notion will ever be put to the test because the original recordings have yet to circulate, privately or publicly.– From WIkipedia

Um, you can put it to the test now:

1. Choppin’ Wood
2. Hey Mr. DJ
3. The Beauty Of The Days Gone By
4. Down The Road
