OldNeumanntapr Notes:
As I write these notes, early in the morning of May 15, 2015, I’m remembering my one and only time recording the ‘King Of The Blues’, after now just reading of his passing. I’m glad I was able to record this show, at the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly. This was a difficult show because I attempted to both record and photograph from the 5th row. (You can hear the shutter of my Nikon FM on the recording.) This was the last time I attempted to do both at the same show, as it was just too difficult. Enjoy!

[August 2024. I just finished going through this show track by track and lowering the levels of the obnoxious close-proximity hand claps in Audacity. I think it makes for a much better listening experience, especially with headphones. There are some that I might of missed, and I didn’t even try to remove the noise of the shutter clicking from my Nikon FM, (Oh the joys of recording and doing photos at the same time!), but as I used to say in college; ‘It was Late, and I was TIRED!’]

He was quite the show man. RIP B.B.!

Here we have a new Richard Thompson recording being shared on torrent for the first time.

Over on etreedb.org there is an another audience source recorded with AKG mics in trading circles.
Which I havenít heard, nor do I know if itís been on torrent anywhere.
I would consider this new torrent Source 2.
Thanks to keytokwy for recording and sharing.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was one of only two shows that I recorded at Palookaville in Santa Cruz, now long since gone. Palookaville was a shoebox-type club with a low ceiling and the stage at one of the narrow ends and a bar at the other. The other show I recorded there was Medeski, Martin, & Wood in 1999. Palookaville had poor ventilation and could get really hot and stuffy inside, as I remember this show to be. My friend Taper Ron nearly passed out because of the heat and the crowded bodies. Palookaville lasted from 1994 to 2002. At the beginning of ‘Eyes Of The World’, a girl cries out to please open the door because it was so hot and stuffy inside. It really was like a sauna.

I recorded the show up front on the left with my Neumann rig and also shot photos with a Nikon F4S and 85mm f/1.4 AIS Nikkor manual focus lens, on Fuji 1600 print film. This was the second time that I have seen Bob Weir solo, the first was when he and Rob Wasserman opened for the Jefferson Airplane in Golden Gate Park on Sept 30 1989.

I saw Charlie Miller again at this show, the one who does the remasters of Dead soundboards and led to people coining the phrase ‘Miller Boards’. Charlie was the only one who the band would allow to plug into the soundboard. The rest of us had to tape in the audience, but at least I got a good place upfront, about 20 ft. from stage on the left side.

OldNeumanntapr:
This was another Bela Fleck show at the old Cuesta College Auditorium, which was located on the old campus behind the creek and once a part of the National Guard army base. The theater was built back during World War II and had amazing acoustics and a lot of charm but was a real eyesore and was eventually deemed to be not worthy for earthquake retrofitting and was abandoned in the late 2000s. Again, because of the cramped spaces in the aisles, the theater would not allow microphone stands so I had to hand-hold the Neumanns on a T-Bar. After the show I got my ticket stub signed by Bela.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This is one of two shows that I have recorded out of my home state of California, the other being Blue Oyster Cult in Utah on this very same trip. I flew to Salt Lake City and met up with my friend Jack, and we recorded Blue Oyster Cult at the Weber County Fair in Ogden, UT, before driving out to record the Allman Brothers Band in CO. I’d always wanted to see Red Rocks Amphitheatre after hearing stories about it for so many years. It’s a really cool place. We got there in the early afternoon after staying in a motel for the night in Wyoming en route from Utah. Red Rocks is a ‘park’ during the daylight hours so we were able to walk through it at see the complete amphitheatre. I had heard that from the upper part of the amphitheatre you can see lightning storms out over the valley below. Thanks to Kirk West, Jack was able to score a pair of backstage passes from the band that we used after the show. We both met Warren Haynes backstage after the show, which is actually ‘under’ the stage rather than behind, because of the natural rock formations that surround the amphitheatre. In addition to my taping gear, which the band had no problem with, I also brought in my old black-body Nikon FM. I had to hide the FM in the taping bag because the band would not allow cameras. So, I had Jack shoot photos during the show and I ran the recording gear, and I told him that if they threw him out for taking pictures at least I would be there to run the audio gear! However, when the time came for photos with Warren backstage after the show, the shot that I took of Jack and Warren was clear but the one that Jack took of Warren and me was blurry. I attribute that to the fact that Jack made several beer runs (for himself) during the show. (He claimed that he wasn’t good with available-light manual focus without a flash. The depth of field at f/2.0 is very shallow.) Likely excuse; He was drunk. Susan Tedeschi opened for the Allman Brothers, and we recorded both sets. We were lucky to claim a tenth row right-of-center position to record from. The sound was really good and I was fortunate to be able to use my friend Allen Chen’s Lunatec V2 microphone preamp. This was the first time that I saw the Allman Brothers do ’Mountain Jam’. We had a minor shock when we got back to the parking lots and found the rental car gone, but soon realized that it had been towed a short distance away and re-parked on the other side of a big rock outcropping. Not sure why. It took another day and a half to get back to Salt Lake City, after overnighting at the same motel in Wyoming. I stayed at Jack’s house just north of Salt Lake City for a week so I could ‘mine’ his DAT collection, and then I flew home. The flight from Phoenix to San Luis Obispo was almost a disaster because thick fog almost kept us from landing at the SLO airport. We made one or two attempts before the stewardess got on the radio and said that because of the fog there was a possibility that we would have to divert to Fresno. My girlfriend was waiting at the airport for me and I was not happy about the prospect of spending the night in Fresno. Fortunately, the third time was the charm and the pilot, whose name was ‘Captain Kirk’, brought us through the fog and we landed safely. Not quite a month later to the day the country would grieve over 9-11.

OldNeumanntapr Notes- (2001)
This was my first show I recorded out of my home state of California. In 2001 I flew to Salt Lake City and my buddy Jack and I drove to Red Rocks to record the Allman Brothers Band. Before we left on that journey we recorded BOC in Ogden, UT. I foolishly waited to buy nine volt batteries for the preamp until right before the show and we ended up stopping at a Texaco station in Ogden. NEVER BUY batteries at a gas station!! I didn’t notice until we got to the show, but the cardboard / plastic container had been opened and one of the batteries was used. So, one channel of the preamp failed toward the end of the show so I had to ‘Y’ the good channel to mono for the last 29 minutes. No other post production has been done to this recording. There is some crowd noise but the music is clear. This was the first time that I had seen Blue Oyster Cult. I listened to them a lot in high school and always liked their music.

OldNeumanntapr Notes (2024)
I added .30 milliseconds of silence to the start of disc two in Audacity to mimic a stereo effect and minimize the ‘flat’ sounding monaural tracks.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was both the first and only time that I’ve seen Mark Knopfler’s band, and also the first and only time that I have been to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. I saw Dire Straits at the Oakland Coliseum on 2/2/92 on the ‘On Every Street’ tour, and I was glad to
see Mark again. I didn’t think there was a lot of difference between Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo. Mark Knopfler IS Dire Straits, in my opinion. I went to the Greek show with my friend Dave. They have ‘stack’ parking at the Greek, on the lawn, so you can’t leave until the show is over. I’d never seen that before, but I guess it’s because they have limited space. The Greek is a beautiful amphitheatre, being right next to Griffith Park. There are huge redwood trees that encircle the amphitheatre. My first experience with the Greek was listening to Neil Diamond’s ‘Hot August Night’ LP when I was a kid, and hearing him talk about the ‘Tree People’ who would climb the trees to hear the show for free. I loved that album. Neil spoke of how beautiful the theatre was, and he wasn’t kidding. He said it was performer’s paradise. Dave’s first show was one of those ‘Hot August Night’ shows in August of 1972, at the Greek. We sat in the left terrace level. The two terraces, one on either side of the main amphitheatre, were added later and did not exist originally. Being that I was near the inside rail, I had a pretty clear and unobstructed view of both the stage and the left PA stacks, so the sound was pretty good. I did have a couple near me, who left midway through the show, that kept unwrapping
little hard candies. I think the microphones picked up the sound of the wrappers. I really enjoyed hearing live renditions of Knopfler’s solo albums, especially the songs ‘What It Is’, ‘Junkie Doll’ and ‘Speedway At Nazareth’ from the ‘Sailing To Philadelphia’ album, and ‘Rudiger’ from the ‘Golden Heart’ album.
