Bill Craven followed VTM around California in the early 70’s recording Van with
a portable Sony stereo recorder and a dual element mic. The results
were fantastic, and the shows he caught have not been previously
circulated. These shows are exciting for their quality and rareness.
They are audience recordings. There are flaws and crowd noise, but
they are easy to listen to and very enjoyable.

There are some fade ins at the beginning and fade outs at the end on some tracks but no real music is lost. This was done by the taper Bill Craven.

Excellent sound quality on this one. Its mostly Keith playing on the piano and singing. The later sessions include some guitar and backing vocals but its all pretty sparse. Ones opinion on it probably depends a lot of what you think of Keith’s singing voice, and the Stone’s ability to do ballads.

Like so many Springsteen boots this one comes with a sound that is less than stellar. I don’t know what it is about Springsteen tapers, but they never seemed to master the fine art of audience recording.

A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

Notes from torrenter:

The 2nd (and final) performance of the DR ZOOM & THE SONIC BOOM from the 1st annual “Ernie The Chicken Festival” – an excuse for an all-day, outdoor party extravaganza featuring several local bands including SUNNY JIM and ODIN. A very good quality soundboard tape of most (possibly all) of the Dr Zoom set has been in circulation since the early 1990’s and can be found on the CD boot “The Bruce Springsteen Story, Vol 5 – Dr Zoom & The Sonic Boom” (E.ST). The liner notes of the bootleg incorrectly lists the audio as emanating from the previous night’s performance at The Sunshine In – however this audio is definitely from the outdoor (not indoor) Dr Zoom show. MC Kevin Connair can be heard jokingly warning the campus Ambulances (who were parked nearby) to get ready as Bruce opens the show with some screeching guitar.
