Comments:
A long, strange trip for this gem. It ended up in our intrepid hero’s hands as the surprise diamond in a trade.

In his own words–

“The person who I received this show from was not able to provide me with any useful information. He actually told me it was from a radio show in 1967 with the songs Astronomy Domine and Green is the Colour among others. There was no artwork, just multi-colored stick on labels with the name Pink Floyd, the letters CWRU, and 1967 on them. When I inquired about the source he just said that he was glad I liked it. Further inquiries were given answers unrelated to the question or not answered at all… Either he was just reluctant to reveal anything or was just unaware of what it was he had.”

So for once we have no lineage information for you. However what we do have is an amazing and complete document of the Floyd in their prime giving us an utterly stunning performance. Of special note is the “jam sessions” mid-song that seems to take place during each track. FOS gets a bit of a Beatlee-sque/Abbey Road type of treatment, Set The Controls is a free for all about half way through, and is that a bow solo ala Jimmy Page during the break during One Of These Days? Careful With That Axe is full of angst and just… well, rocks! Echoes is perfect as well! Finally, we get a rare treat with Blues included for good measure.

As a result of our cleanup efforts there’s great definition of the instruments and you can hear some things that I know I’ve never heard before in these live recordings. These surprises make this one a keeper and a welcome addition to the collection.

Technical Notes:

It looks as though some NR was performed in the past as part of the upper end has been completely removed (from 165000 Hz -22050 Hz).

Credits: Jim Canale and Free Range Pigs would like to thank the following people for their contributions to this effort:

Brucebase:

Soundboard and radio broadcast tapes (WMMS) available – good show. It’s interesting to note that this show was remastered by Bruce’s
management and given to KSAN in San Fransico who broadcast it as a replacement for a scheduled Winterland rebroadcast. This must
have happened in 1979 sometime. The remastered show has fantastic stereo seperation and coupled with the fact that this is a good show in the first place, it has to rank as one of the best of the available shows in 1978. – Released on LP and CD. The most recent (and best quality) CD releases of this show are”Agora Night” by Crystal Cat and “Just In Time For Summer”

Notes from the original uploader:

A 1st gen audience recording. Jim is pretty drunk for this show and has a lot of fun with the audience. Unlike in Miami, he doesn’t berate the crowd, but does threaten to kill someone if his monitors aren’t turned up as “Five To One” starts. “Hey listen, if I can’t hear myself a little bit louder than that, I’m just gonna quit, go out, and kill some people! C’mon!” The band keeps vamping but Jim continues to playfully talk with the audience. After over six minutes of banter he asks, “What song are we singing?” and finally begins the lyrics to “Five To One.” After a surprisingly tight version of “When The Music’s Over,” the band goes into “Soul Kitchen” and during the song’s second verse, Jim misses his cue. Toward the end of the song, the band realizes that Jim isn’t interested in finishing the lyrics and they break into “Light My Fire.” By the end of the concert, Jim is incoherent and screaming more and more until he finally jumps into the audience. He manages to get back onstage (with the help of a number of stage hands) and barely finishes “Light My Fire” before leaving the stage. At the very end of the tape, you can hear the house announcer ask the audience for Jim’s coat. (“Has anyone seen Jim Morrison’s coat?”) Definitely an interesting night as far as Doors shows go. Only wish we had a better quality recording. Enjoy.

=============

Notes by rednoise Oct. 17, 2005…

This is a transfer of my original radio transcript LP to digital. The
record has been played a lot, so there is some surface noise, but it was
minimal to begin with and I spent some time carefully cleaning what
could be corrected without negatively impacting the music.

LP > WAV > slight cleanup with Adobe Audition > FLAC>MP3

The following tracks have been omitted because they have been officially
released on the album “The Name of the Band is the Talking Heads”.

4. The Girls Want to Be with the Girls (3:56)
6. Electricity (3:31)
8. Found a Job (5:35)

Throughout the latter half of 1978 and the early months of 1979, Talking
Heads continued to criss-cross their way across Europe and the U.S.A.,
surprising many audiences with the power of their live shows.

Recognizing that on stage the band tapped into an energy source that
their records left unminded, Warner Brothers (Sire’s parent company)
taped a Talking Heads show at the Agora in Cleveland on March 15th 1979.
Entitled ‘Talking Heads Live On Tour’, the album caught the group on the
verge of the sessions for their third album Fear Of Music, and one song,
‘Electricity’, later appeared on that album as ‘Drugs’. The rest of the
live album consisted of songs from the first two studio LP’s, charged
with an emotional current that belied the often placid sound of the
group’s records.
