Tales Of Yankee Power

CD Review:
As for the sound quality, this audience recording is a little distant, and a little muffled. If you’re a fan of the slick, rich Street Legal sound, however, this less than perfect quality soon melts away into the wall of sound, and all you’ll hear is the stunning performance. The package, like all ‘Wanted Man’ titles of the early 90’s, is a little weak. The front cover is the only image. The back lists the songs only. The venue listing is narrowed down to: “Live in Europe, June 1978”. In fact, this show is the 4th night of the six night Earls Court residency.
© 2001 Craig Pinkerton Bobsboots.com

Show Review:
This show is a great example of the 1978 performances. Full, powerful, and tight. The horns, strings, and B-3 organ arrangements; along with Billy Cross’ smooth guitar leads and the backing vocals of Springs, Harris, & Dennis give this tour the production and sound of the 1978 Street LegalLP. That release was recorded only one month before this show, using the same musicians as appear here on tour. Dylan is energetic and talkative. He introduces ‘Maggie’s Farm’ as: “I played this at the Newport Folk Folk Festival ….. This is the song that got me booed off the stage”.

Thank you. This is another animal song I wrote, a long time ago. It’s about the man animal. (before Maggie’s Farm)

Thank you. This is a new song we recently recorded, called Dead Man, Dead Man When Will You Arise.

Thank you. I wanna introduce the man on the keyboards tonight, from Portsmouth, Virginia, give him a big hand, Willie Smith. Standing next to him, on the guitar, Fred Tackett. Standing next to him, on the other guitar, Steve Ripley. On the left over there, the girl you met earlier, Carolyn Dennis. Standing next to her. Madelyn Quebec. Right, Regina McCreary, Clydie King. Standing next to her, Tim Drummond. Well, I hope you heard something that you came to hear. (….) Hard to judge how we’re doing by these monitors on stage. Hard to tell what is coming across out there. Anyway, on the drums, a man who’s truly a legend in his own lifetime. Not only his lifetime, but plenty other peoplesí lifetime. On the drums, ladies and gentlemen. from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jimmy Lee Keltner. Ha-ha. I’d like to introduce all you people to, but I don’t know your names. All right. Thank you. LB-5271, (75min+48min), Legendary Taper D recording. Received as audio CD-R third generation from taper., DAT recording but no details on lineage. Excellent sound. Clear and, upfront. Less chatter than LB-492 (different source), but not as warm., A matter of personal taste., Enjoy, -ts-; bittorrent download 08/07; different recording than LB-492 based on different crowd at begin of d2t8; in comparison this has a slight hiss noticable on d2t8 which makes it less clear and this is also a little harsher; both have sound that improves over beginning of show; (did not listen to all of this)

Thank you, Maggie’s Farm. I think it still exists. (after Maggie’s Farm) This is a new song off a forthcoming record album. I hope it’s on the album anyway.
It’s called Dead Man, Dead Man When Will You Arise. I wrote quite a few new songs I thought I’d play them because I don’t know how much longer I’ll be playing new songs. People wanna hear the old songs. I was thinking of cutting out all the new songs. So I can play, I’m gonna play just older stuff. This time here in London I’m gonna play all the new songs so in case they never get heard again. Dead Man, Dead Man When Will You Arise.

Thank you. We gonna play you another, this is Carolyn Dennis. Who’s gonna sing a song called Walking Around Heaven All Day. Carolyn Dennis. [Carolyn Dennis: “I’d like to dedicate this to Bob and all the members in the band and especially Miss Clydie King.”]

We’re gonna play a real old song here. A song I used to sing before I used to write any songs. I used to sing this in the Troubadour. I don’t know if that club is still called The Troubadour? Well it’s the same way we used to sing it then, hasn’t changed a bit. (before Mary From The Wild Moor)

Thank you. Thank you for coming tonight. I wanna introduce the lady on the lady on the left one more time, Miss Carolyn Dennis. Standing next to her is Madelyn Quebec, Regina McCreary, Clydie King. On the keyboards tonight, Willie Smith. Playing the guitars tonight, on my right, Fred Tackett, playing the other guitar is Steve Ripley. On the bass guitar tonight, from Cincinnati Ohio, the walls of Jericho, Tim Drummond. On the drums, a legend in his own time for real, Jim Keltner. All right now, I hope we can come back here next year. I know we’ll be here tomorrow night and the night after that. We can’t come over here enough. Thank you. (at the end of In The Garden)
