This is very much a straight upload of a lovely CD-R I got a few years back.

It’s true stereo (unlike another mono version that circulates) and couldn’t be mistaken for pre-FM were it not for the very brief announcements in two places.

The only changes were reducing the speed -0 minus 3 percent (by comparing to other contemporaneous recordings), and editing
in the last chord of The Good Thing, and synch-ing in the start of Take Me To The River as there was a small skip
in the music files on that (not a CD-R fault). I synch-ed in the missing 2 seconds (! – 1 second of each) from the
download version, doing a little careful mixing to ensure a smooth match. If I hadn’t described this here you
wouldn’t know the joins were there.

NB there is some confusion over Talking Heads FM concert dates from what I can see but my CD-R – in a printed cover (very nice
but sorry I don’t have a working scanner) stated 28 August 1978.

Enjoy!

LOST HEADS!

Like another Talking Heads collector I’ve lost some of my files in a hard drive crash.

Please share more Talking Heads if you can.

Notes from the original uploader:
—–
I got this show in a trade a couple of years ago. This is from the Bloodflowers promo tour where the band played in smaller venues than usual. I tried to get tickets for the show but they were sold out within a couple of seconds here. Doh! I’m pretty sure I have the correct venue information and I’m also pretty sure it was recorded off of WXRT in Chicago. The discs I received had sector boundary errors between each track so I fixed those and some sloppy edits in Wavelab. Overall, this is an excellent sounding show but there’s a couple of issues with One Hundred Years. There’s a couple of dropouts at around one minute into the song. It looks like it happened during the broadcast but I’m not sure. Also, not long after the dropouts, the song fades out and Bloodflowers begins. It seems like an unnatural end to the song and I’d be surprised if it was performed that way.

Comment:
Van Morrison was the second-to-last performer on the main stage at this festival.
Other acts included Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, The Saw Doctors, Taj Mahal, Elvis Costello, and, curiously enough, Hootie and the Blowfish.

(Hootie was technically the “headliner” of the show, as the last performer of the evening. The promoter’s explanation was that they wanted to avoid a crush for the exit, and therefore put the *least* appealing artist on last so that fans would stream out in a leisurely fashion during their set. As one might expect, Hootie’s opening notes merely prompted a premature rush for the parking lot an hour before the scheduled conclusion.)

Van appears to hold a grudge against Chicago — this marked his first appearance here since 1984.
(In his subsequent shows here in January 2001, he cut his set on the second night to a mere 70 minutes — reportedly because he was offended by the powerful and positive reaction to opener Lonnie Brooks the previous night. To prevent Lonnie from stealing his thunder in the second show, Van forced him to begin his set as the doors opened — thus preventing the majority of the audience from even seeing any of his performance.)

That said, this is an amazing show — I think it’s got much more energy than the following night
in Roseland. I taped this about five feet from the left speaker stack, so there is minimal crowd
noise (nobody was in front of me) and terrific range. The only flaw was that in my enthusiasm
I accidentally bumped the levels about 15 minutes into the set and didn’t notice my error for another
20 minutes. This has been mostly offset by normalizing the volume on the back end, but one
may notice a couple of level variations — hopefully not enough to hinder anyone’s enjoyment.

This is one of my favorite masters, and I don’t think it’s in wide
circulation — I have only traded it once or twice. There is a much lesser-quality
source circulating in the Elvis Costello community; I don’t know what is around in the VM
trading circles. Hope you like it!

From the original uploader:
Let me start by saying this is a SBD Master. I love Frank and was very excited
to have tracked this down. About 10 years ago I met a guy I was going to by some
electronics from. After talking for a while, he told me he worked sound at many
of the theaters in Chicago. He told me he (and some other folk) recorded a bunch
of shows including, crooners, broadway and comedy etc. Needless to say I am now
have them in my posession and will begin start transferring many of these masters
to digital. Some are on cassette, others from the 90’s are on Mini-Disc masters.
Bumping into this guy was a very random and serendipitous event.

It took a lot of research to find the correct date for this show. In May of 1984,
Frank played 5 shows at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. (It’s located inside
the McCormick Place Convention Center along the lake front). Based on the setlist
and a few comments by Frank, this is the May 11th show.

Now it’s time to listen to the Chairman of The Board. So turn it up and
“Make it one more for my baby, and one more for the road”.
