Jerry Garcia & Friends – St. Louis, MO (12/09/71)

Jerry Garcia & Buddy Cage
December 09, 1971
The date of this show is in dispute. Consensus seems to be that t took place December 9, 1971 in St. Louis.

Jerry Base has more details.

The Grateful Dead played gig later that day. You can find that show here.

Picked up something I haven’t seen elsewhere.
This single sbd CD features Jerry Garcia & Buddy Cage jamming and
noodling with a few Marmaduke vocals and a Weir vocal (Seasons).
Someone (Marmaduke) picks up a bass halfway through)
Very interesting artifact, not from the vault. Session runs until reel
runs out (47:30)

Here’s what I have on this:

Jam Session Info
Here’s the note from James that came with the show:
Now, to the other goody I sent you. Here’s the story on that. A friend of
mine who does sound and production work here in St. Louis was taking slide
guitar lessons and went through the archive of open reel tapes they had
there and found the one in question. He asked to borrow it and took it home
and did a 24 bit digital transfer from the mono 7″ open reel. This hasn’t
been heard by many more people than Brad, myself and a few others in 30
years!!! I was pretty damn excited about the discovery and glad that I was
only the second person that had heard it counting Brad after he mastered the
tape. As far as I know at this point it’s Jerry Garcia, Buddy Cage and other
members of NRPS. Other than that that’s all I know right now. The Grateful
Dead’s archives don’t even have this tape. Pretty fun stuff to listen too
even though it’s a lot of noodling and such. I kinda like it myself.
Everything was plugged straight into the open reel deck. So the source would be:
7″ mono open reel > 24 bit transfer > resample > CD-R

My attempt at a setlist:

  1. unknown (Garcia & Cage duet)
  2. Runnin’ Back To You ( G&C no vocal)
  3. unknown (G&C)
  4. noodle (G&C)
  5. Take Me Home Country Roads (G&C Marmaduke and others on vocals)
  6. jazz riff (Cage)
  7. Long Black Veil (G&C McDuke on vocals)
  8. Anybody Goin’ To San Antone (G&C plus McDuke)
  9. unknown (Jerry out? – he mentions having to get to hotel at the airport)
  10. unknown
  11. equipment fu
  12. unknown
  13. Seasons// (Weir on vocal)

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
This surprisingly clear audience recording from 1970 captures The Who in typical blistering form for the time period, if not slightly plagued by what sounds like some technical issues at the beginning of the show. There are some cuts throughout this recording as well which make it far from complete. Fortunately, what we do have here is great and seems to improve in sound quality as the show goes on. We are fortunate enough to have this recording because of Charles C.’s original efforts to record and trade this show along with The Who’s performance from the Kemper Arena in ’75.
There are a couple of main issues with the source I used in this remaster.
First off, the overall level of the recording is very low. I have properly amplified the overall signal to a reasonable level while not using any compression or limiting in the process.
Secondly, the frequency response of this recording was very unbalanced, as with many audience recordings, with a bulk of low to low mid frequencies dominating the spectrum. I have therefore adjusted several nasty frequencies to help eliminate some of the unneccesary noise and boominess to the overall tone. No noise reduction of any kind has been used in this remaster. Enjoy The Who at their best, live in 1970!

Notes:

A v special thanks to ‘ev si’ for sharing his original cassettes of this
mid-70’s Who classic from the ‘Who By Numbers’ tour. Transferred straight
from tape to cd, only volume levels were changed to improve over-all flow.
Several minor tape anomalies exist early on, otherwise, a v clear well-balanced
recording for the time. Adjust stereo playback settings a/r to optimize sound.

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons/TwoFeetThick):
Excellent show with the opening songs totally rocked out. Band looks really happy and playing great. ‘Oceans’ is a beautiful opener and ‘In Hiding’ is one of the finest versions played. ‘Nothingman’ is introduced as a song about a man who “not only couldn’t change the world … he couldn’t even take care of himself.” ‘Institutionalized’ is a Suicidal Tendencies cover (“I’m not crazy, you’re the one who’s crazy … institution.”) ‘Fuckin’ Up’ is a total surprise! Great crowd.
