Historical Notes:
-This was the first folk music festival at CSM
-To my knowledge, this is the only recording of the entire festival in circulation
-Festival was produced by Rodney Albin with the CSM Art Students Guild
-Rodney Albin was older brother to Peter Albin of Big Brother & Holding Company
-Emcee was Rick Melrose, Carlmont High School friend of the Albins and David Nelson
-John Jennings of Peninsula Very Little Folk Singers later formed the rock band Wildflower
-This event was preceded by another separate Hart Valley Drifters performance at an art gallery event at San Francisco State College
-Right before “The Cuckoo,” Garcia mentions appearing at a festival workshop which was from 1-4pm
-Ken Frankel was a sometime member of the Hart Valley Drifters, and was listed in the program for this event, but did not attend
-Ron McKernan is listed in the program as a performer for this event, but did not attend
-There is a photo taken on this date which was signed by all members of the Hart Valley Drifters and dedicated to John Winter, dated December 18, 1962 that ended up in the Grateful Dead archives. This photo was sold at auction in April 2015 for $8500
-There is another photo print available from a slightly different moment which was used in the printed booklet for the “Jerry Garcia Before The Dead” release
-Thanks to Peter Albin for the festival program flyer, poster reprint and sharing his memories of the event

*This recording was deemed too ragged for inclusion on the “Before The Dead” release, so consider it a free gift and a companion. Please support the efforts of this release by purchasing the “Before The Dead” collection.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was another show at the Pozo Saloon, a 100+ year-old stage stop out in the country south east of Santa Margarita, CA. Bill Gaines was doing sound and I would always ask him to ask the artists if we could do a board recording. Most of the time the answer was no, but not always. In the early 90s the stage was the back porch of the saloon, and there were a lot of trees that got in the way of sight lines. In the mid to late 90s they built a big stage out back in the pasture. The Pozo Saloon is so remote there is a story circulating that when Bruce Springsteen needed a place to confer with Clarence Clemons Bruce chose the Pozo Saloon as an out of the way place where no one would recognize them. Apparently no one did! My recording was uploaded to the Live Music Archive by Brad Foster a number of years ago but he used EAC to extract the trade disc that I sent him.

Do NOT Convert To MP3.
Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. 😉

notes:
The original taper(s) stopped the tape between most songs during the acoustic set and some of the electric set. I have crossfaded the tracks together to smooth the cuts and provide a generally more pleasant listening experience. No music was lost (and no further tinkering was attempted), although I have removed some crowd and a wee bit o’ tuning to tighten things up and facilitate a two disc set. To accomplish this, I decoded the original sources with xACT, lightly edited several tracks in Peak LE 5.2, and did the crossfades in Jam 5. Encoding to FLAC was done with Toast 7.1.2, compression level 6.

CDJones 1/17/2007

From the original sources:

Set 1:
Master Audience Cassette; Sony TC-124 with Sony Stereo Mic Master cassettes played back on Nakamichi Dragon >
Digital Audio Labs Card Deluxe soundcard (96Mhz/24 bit)> HD
Editing performed in Adobe Audition; Dithered and downsampled to 44.1 MHz / 16 bit;
Transfer and FLAC encoding by David Minches.

This is a very fine recording, especially of the acoustic set and includes 4 songs that aren’t in circulation. The tape deck was paused
in between songs causing a “whooshing” sound which I partially edited out. The first few notes of many of the songs are missing due to the pausing but do not allow that to take away from the excellence of the recording. There are other anomalies and cuts, some of which I had not
listed.

Set 2:
Notes:
–a quote from deadlists: “The Taper’s Compendium seriously misrepresents the quality of this AUD master, and of the previous night’s.”

Sandy’s recollection:
“Jerry came in — it was my understanding that it was after a GD show. He sat up in the balcony with a couple of ladies and listened to probably about
half of our last set. (He had a Black Russian in front of him, a drink he would frequently order and not always finish.) I’d been up there talking
with them before the set; he said he’d come up and play. When we called him up, somebody produced a guitar, a Stratocaster (I think there was an amp
already on the stage), and he came up and played the rest of that set with us. A bluegrass picker from the Bay Area who was going to NYU at the time,
Tom Bekeny, also sat in (for all or part of the night), playing mandolin and some fiddle. Sean jammed with us on the last song; whether he’d played a solo
set earlier, I don’t recall. I’m pretty sure the original tape was made by the Lone Star’s bartender, name unknown, who held up a small cassette deck as soon
as he saw Garcia was going to play.”

Thanks to Mike for graciously transferring the tape and to Sandy for
information and context!
