OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the last time that I’ve been to the Majestic Ventura Theater. The theater owners have made a lot of improvements to the theater, especially with the new sound system, since I was first there to record Arlo Guthrie in early 1991. I used to like to record in the front row of the balcony because there was less security up there and you didn’t get the noise of the dinner guests and the waitresses. The downside was that you were farther from the stage and the SPL was lower. Also, it was difficult to hear any comments that the artist might say between songs. The bottom floor of the Ventura Theater is all dinner tables and you need dinner reservations down there. Those reservations go quickly. (When I recorded Gregg Allman, openly, on the floor at the Ventura Theater a month earlier I had to pay $20 cash to the waiter on the spot to keep my place. I had already set up my stand and they were threatening to eject me because I lacked dinner reservations.) On the floor is closer to the stage and has better sound, but it’s more exposed. I have heard that the theater owners have since permanently closed off the balcony and built a wall dividing the floor section from the bar area, which is under the balcony, probably to improve the acoustics of the front part of the theater. The Ventura Theater was built in the 1920s, and at one point all the original theater seats were removed to convert it to a dinner theater with three tiered levels. I always seem to cut the beginning of ‘Spanish Pipedream’.
On a positive note, I think this was the only time I’d heard John do ‘Linda Goes To Mars’, a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, I found that my ticket stub must have suffered from heat damage as it was mostly blacked out except for the date so I was unable to scan it to use with this recording.

December 2024 Notes:
I just remastered this recording to try and reduce the microphone noise that occurred when someone would jostle me because inn those years I was wearing the AK 40 capsules mounted on an x/y bar on my collar. I also wanted to lower the ambient crowd boise so i could boost the music level a bit because the quiet parts when John would speak to the audience were difficult to hear well.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was my first John Prine recording. I got a ride to the show with my friends Dave and Brian, and for some reason (probably because of Dave) we got there late and the show had already started. Santa Cruz is about two and a half hours north of San Luis Obispo County, so we had a bit of a drive. I made my way onto the floor as best as I could but Prine had already played ‘Spanish Pipedream’ and was part of the way into ‘Six O:Clock News’ before I was able to start recording. There is some crowd noise on this recording but overall it’s not too bad. I just wish I would have been able to get the complete show recorded. I had never seen John Prine before and loved his music. He is such a gifted storyteller. I still remember thinking it was funny during ‘The Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness’ when John sang, ‘You come home late and you come home curly..’, the guy near me exclaimed ‘Curly!’. It’s on the tape. Too funny. I recorded John’s show about six months later at Cuesta College and got a little better recording. The Catalyst was a fun venue. It’s an old bowling alley that was converted to a club and the stage is very high. There is a balcony on each side which is where I would have rather been, but they fill up fast. This, I think, was my second Catalyst show, with the first being Dick Dale in January of ’95.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the last time that I have recorded John Prine, and the show took place not long after Prine’s throat surgery so his voice sounds a little raspy. It was a good show however. This was the first time that I saw him do the Flag Decal song. This was also the first time that I saw him do ‘Taking A Walk’, ‘Crazy As A Loon’, and ‘Some Humans Ain’t Human’, which was a song about George W. Bush that was funny. The Cal Poly Performing Arts Center is always a good place to see / record a show because it’s a small venue with excellent acoustics, and had minimal security other than elderly ushers.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the second time that I had the pleasure of recording John Prine in concert, after catching his show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz six months previously. That show had some problems, as we got there late and had to stand on the floor among the loud rowdy crowd.
The Cuesta College show was nice because it was in the old Cuesta Auditorium and we had reserved seats. The theater, built back during WWII, is located on the old Cuesta campus and was previously part of the Camp San Luis National Guard army base. The theater, now condemned and slowly falling into ruin, had great acoustics though it looked like hell with pealing paint and a leaky roof. It was deemed not worthy to be retrofitted for earthquake safety. It’s been vacant since the mid 2000s, but I was fortunate to have seen and recorded many great shows there over the years.

I always seem to miss the opening of ‘Spanish Pipedream’, as Prine runs on stage and starts the song when the lights drop. It took a minute to load the DAT in the machine and start recording. (The Sony D7 and D8 recorders did not have a power switch, but would go into a sleep mode after a period of inactivity once the tape was loaded. I had problems on more than one occasion of the recorder mis-loading a tape when I tried to start recording from sleep mode, so I always started the recording directly after loading. Knowing when to start was always the biggest question.)

This show had a great set list. I really enjoyed hearing ‘The Late John Garfield Blues’, ‘Let’s Talk Dirty In Hawaiian’, ‘The Bottomless Lake’, and ‘Sabu Visits The Twin Cities Alone’. I don’t know if I’ve heard ‘Sabu’ since. It’s a great song. I like the story that John tells on the ‘John Prine Live’ CD from the mid 80s.

John still had his voice back in the 90s. It would get worse as time went on, a victim of cigarettes I imagine, until he would have to have throat surgery. I wish I would have been able to record him earlier, back in the 80s.

The last track is a taper outro. I liked to let the recorder run when I left the venue. Sometimes the stories from friends were funny. There is a one or two second break between the last encore song and the outro. Feel free to omit the last track if you so desire. This one is kind of funny because directly after the show As we were about to leave the auditorium my I turned to my friend Dave’s friend Wayne and asked if he wanted one. He said, “Want What? You’ve got a TAPE? I’d Love it! You are getting very very proficient!”
