Stage banter transcription by Tom Pratt!

This is quite possibly a mixture of two AM Radio recordings. It has the same quality and feel
as many other 60’s AM radio shows. The recording is mono. It was the first of many early
1970’s Opera House concerts showcasing Tommy.

No amendments were made to the audio files after the rip. Some tape anomalies and cuts are
present.

Tattoo contains a tape anomaly at 1m 12s. Young Man Blues contains a dropout at 7m 04s during
Pete’s banter about A Quick One and again at 8m 32s. The dropouts are for milliseconds. There
is a noticable dip in sound quality during Overture at 55s – this is where the second tape
source possibly starts. Go To The Mirror has a slight cut at the end (no music is lost, just
crowd noise). The first few seconds of My Generation suffers from tape flutter.

According to Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, the show from the 17th was broadcast on Europa 1. The
actual date of this particular boot may well be from the 17th, however, the Concert File book
lists Pete’s stage banter as being from the 16th.

Artwork, Disc Scans, EAC Rip Logs, FLAC Fingerprints and MD5 Verification File all included.

NOW, THIS ONE’S INTERESTING!
I received this recording claiming it was one of the famed gig in Paris on 9th December 1969. But it is not so.
That gig was always mythical and slightly doubted. On Baba O’Riley’s Bootleg Page (ROIO section), it appears under this date with a very similar track list, just short of My Generation encore. This was one of the strongest motifs for the belief that the show really happened.
However, Joe McMichael and Irish Jack Lyons postpone the date by one day in the Concert File stating:
“Wednesday, December 10, Venue unknown, Paris, France;
According to a Melody Maker news report, The Who were due to pay a three-day visit to Paris for television promotion and possible concerts. However, it’s probable the trip didn’t eventuate, considering the group played two Paris concerts the following month. A recording of a show in Paris has been attributed to this December 1969 date, although it may well be from January 16, 1970.
Pete commented that it was the first Who appearance in Paris for some years, and the first time ‘A Quick One (While He’s Away)’ had been played in the city, let alone Tommy. ‘Substitute’ as played at this show sounded particularly strong.”
Neill and Kent do not mention the stint at all in Anyway Anyhow Anywhere (which is about the most reliable Who chronicle that there is), but for the Paris visit in January next year, there is an important note:
“The show on the 17th was broadcast live at 9:00 p.m. on Europe 1 as a Musicorama special, and news footage was shown on ORTF.”
Therefore the bootlegged FM broadcast (No Fiddlesticks) stemmed from the show on 17th, and not from the 16th as the description of it often said. Another audience recording circulated very lately on Dime is identical with the FM recording (the same stage banter, song list and playing). So both the circulated recordings (AUD and FM) are from the same show and that was the 17th.
Recently, the aforementioned news footage appeared on YouTube, subtitled as a shot from 16th January (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w76H9Y3BDEE), providing the last missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle. The commentary in the shot says: “After Covent Garden,……., The Who appeared after four years in Paris at the Theatre of Champs ElysÈes.” (Alright they got it wrong, it was not Covent Garden but the Coliseum; nevertheless, this is evidently a shot taken AFTER their London opera house appearance.) And more importantly, Pete can clearly be heard say: “It’s nice to be back in Paris because last time we were here nobody really knew who we were…” And he would not have said this, had they been in Paris just one month ago!
And he continues, “We’d like to especially dedicate this next song, which is probably the biggest hit in our history, probably bigger than Tommy in its time…”
Listening to this audience recording, you will find exactly the same speech before My Generation! Therefore this is not the recording from 9th or 10th December 1969 because no such show ever happened!
It is a recording of their first Paris gig after 4 years, on 16th January 1970.
Mystery solved! Another Who myth busted! Enjoy!

From the original uploader:
Here, somewhat belatedly, is the first European show, and arguably the first show of the tour proper.

I was there and it was an amazing show, real fun, with a very eager audience.

The title is a reference to the correct pronunciation of “McGrath”. He explains how he was chastised about this in the intro, which is at the end of the track with ‘My Oklahoma Home’. The pronunciation regressed on the subsequent BBC concert, so while the setlist may not be unique, this show may be only one with him getting that surname right!

The sound quality is ok, but could do with some improvement. Rather than fiddle with it, I have left this exactly as on the CD-Rs, so someone with better software and mixing skills will have an untainted source. If someone would like to do a remix, here are some areas in need of attention:
* The volume level is low and need normalising.
* May need more bass.
* There is some hiss on ‘s’ sounds, I noticed this on ‘My City of Ruins’

======

A very good audience tape, with the only problem being the taper’s girlfriend shouting and screaming A LOT.
She screams almost all the time through ’10th Avenue’ but other than that, I can’t say it bothers that much –
I’d say it pissed me off the most when she keeps screaming during the quiet parts of Jungleland.
I don’t usually get any recordings with a lot of screaming/shouting near taper, but on this show the good sound makes up for it enough.

Thanks a lot to mr. Freezer for taping the show and sharing this gem.

Little editing note: Reduced volume during some screaming parts between songs. One of the great performances of Sandy.

======

Taper Notes:

I had a girlfriend who wanted to “sing” along all night. And she is LOUD and off-key and out of time
(you’ll love the first few songs in set 2…….) IF I had pulled that whistle out, she’d have
tooted it all night, her singing is bad enough….but it can be ignored IF you’re really a Boss fan….
(I was, this was my 7th show since 1975….in 1976 I had seat ! in row A and he jumped off the
stage in front of me while I was taping, looked at me, laughed and ran out into the audience……)
But as regards my then-girlfriend:
You’ll thrill to her duet with Bruce on Hungry Heart……
You’ll marvel at her version of Sherry Darlin’…..
You’ll be shaking your head as she joins in on the choruses of Fire….
You’ll be pissed off at me for not telling her to shut up…
But, hey, I was “in love” … she was so cute…..but she kept quiet through other shows, bands
like Ramones, Squeeze, John Cale, The Who, Snakefinger……I figured I owed her a night to get
sloppy drunk and sing and dance and howl at a concert…..Now, you too will get a chance to enjoy
her 25 years after the fact……Freezer

JEMS is pleased to present a previously uncirculated and complete master recording of the second night of Toronto ’81. It’s also the second show from the work of the taper(s) mackeck.

d.j.mackeck reached out earlier this year to report that his dad had recorded several Bruce shows between 1978 and 1984 in their hometown of Toronto, as well as cities within spitting distance like Detroit and Buffalo. He was kind enough to ship an initial batch of three masters, from which we made fresh transfers here at JEMS South.

The shows were recorded on a small portable recorder with built-in mic (likely a Toshiba or Sony, but memories have faded) in mono. As with the Buffalo ’80 recording, mackeck manages to avoid most audience chatter or noise, yielding a recording that is clear, relatively close, consistent and highly listenable. It only needed two small patches as noted above.

The only material flaw in this new Toronto recording was again micro gaps, like those found on the Buffalo master, only this time there were even more of them. In 50-60 random spots across the three hours, the recorder cuts out momentarily leaving an audible gap.

On the Toronto recording, the micro gaps are all well under a second in length, though absolutely noticeable. But happily for us, it isn’t 1981 but 2013 and audio technology has come a long way. Using iZotope RX and its magical “Spectral Repair” plug in, JEMS was able to repair the gaps in a manner that should make most of them inaudible to all but the most committed and headphone-wearing trainspotter. It was a more challenging tape to repair than Buffalo, but the end result is still quite remarkable. Samples provided.

As for the show itself, the second night of Toronto is obviously not nearly as well known as the first, for which there is an extant 90 minute soundboard recording (we will be doing mackeck’s 1/20/81 recording next). But like a lot of second nights, it is probably the more spirited performance. These would prove to be the fading days for some River classics, as this would be one of the last ten outings for “The Price You Pay” and “Fade Away,” both of which are sublime here, as are other tour stalwarts, “Stolen Car” and “Wreck on the Highway.” This early in ’81 it is still a classic River tour show, just one you haven’t heard very often.

To take this one the last mile and provide the patching is our comrade and the unchallenged king of multiple source recordings, MJK5510. Thanks to him for final finishing and prepping.

Big big thanks to d.j. mackeck and his dad for loaning JEMS their masters and recording the show in the first place.

BK for JEMS
