Bob Dylan – Let My Poor Voice Be Heard, Publishing Demos

Bob Dylan
Let My Poor Voice Be Heard
Bob Dylan Publishing Demos

This one is excellent. Iíve never heard these versions of most of the songs, and there are a few songs I never heard before. The sound quality varies somewhat, but itís all excellent with only a few exceptions.
These “Hollow Horn” boots come in a unique kind of case, not a normal plastic case. I’ve adapted the artwork so it will fit in a standard jewel case.

  1. Blowin’ in the Wind [1:45.21]

  2. The Ballad of the Gliding Swan [0:42.69]

SOURCE THREE – “recording a” (well remastered, or “recording b”) – BBC4 “Dylan in the Madhouse” 2005

  7. The Ballad of the Gliding Swan (complete w/voiceover) [2:16.30]
  8. Blowin’ in the Wind (harp) [0:14.40]

SOURCE FIVE – “recording c” – this (reportedly 4-song tape) was admitted too late to be included within the BBC4 main program, but the following fragments are used while credits roll. Best available quality so far – BBC4 “Dylan in the Madhouse” 2005

  1. The Ballad of the Gliding Swan [0:58.73]
  2. Blowin’ in the Wind [0:14.13]

Recordings as complete as known to circulate.

This release clears up a lot of speculation about the Beatlesí Star Club tapes, thanks to an unedited and unprocessed source tape (for which we cannot thank DarthDisc and the Darthelves enough). Although the recording dates are still guesses, we now know the correct order for about 2/3 of the songs. Even so, the second half of disc one is sequenced based more on smooth transitions than solid setlist information.

We tried to make sure every Star Club sound was accounted for, but not repeated: auditioning many Live At The Star Club CDs and LPS on a number of labels. Even so, we used Darthdiscís unprocessed tape wherever possible. As well as offering upgrades and previously unheard chat Red Hot, though still incomplete, is twice as long as before. ìRed SailsÖî now has an extra verse compared with the released version, while “I Saw Her Standing There” on disc two has an extra guitar solo. Conversely, we removed looped portions of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down”, “Twist And Shout” and “I Remember You.”

It’s by no means perfect, but itís the best we have at the moment. And it’s the first time we’ve listened to the Star Club tapes in years. Hopefully you’ll gain a new appreciation for these historic recordings as well.

All tracks mono, at the correct speed, and eq’d for the most coherent listening experience. Enjoy!

Here’s why the original updates:

The full third version of “A Taste Of Honey” magically appeared, just after Star Club came out. It turns out that some dialogue that we placed on disc one belongs just before it. So we cut it out of disc one, put it at the end of “Hippy Hippy Shake” and did a minor tweak to “Money” just for the sake of continuity. A change of the info file and inside artwork to reflect this, and we’re all done.

Bobsboots says:

A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

d2t05 – Blue Goose

Editing Notes:
— Software used – Adobe Audition, Wavelab, iZotope Ozone and Waves Z-Noise
— The transfer was made at 24/96 and then downsampled and dithered (MBIT+)
— The major changes made were a significant number of level adjustments in
the first track and eq to all tracks. Other than that, it was a question
of repairing as many of the myriad relatively minor flaws of this very old
recording, as best as was possible, Also a few other small level changes
have been made. Finally some noise reduction was applied throughout.

Notes:
— We verified that the transfer for this release was from a first generation
MAR copy. According to Barry Glassberg, “Lou [Tambakos] got the tape from
Marshall [Leicester] and we transferred it at Scott Rostler’s apartment on his gear.”
— “These are, without a doubt, the finest sounding versions of these historic recordings
that I have ever heard!! I never thought that they would ever be available with such
clarity. A real pleasure to listen to. For me, the single most exciting track is
“99 Years”, hearing the young Pigpen doing what he did the best, singing the blues.”
– SIRMick, September 2007.
— The tape box shows that the performer of “Blue Goose” was Ken Frankel. Ken was a
friend of Jerry’s and played with him in several early bands during 1962-63. Mick
recently contacted Ken and, after hearing Blue Goose, confirmed that it was him
performing on this track. In addition, he thinks that it was probably taped by Rodney
Albin, who ran The “New” Boars Head.
— We think Rodney Albin possibly taped the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers performance.
However, that is basically speculation, based in part on the correspondence with Ken Frankel.
