Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
The first homecoming show. In ‘Long Road’ Ed sings, “And the skies are always grey…” Ed also mentions that sometimes it’s nice to play a show with your house key in your pocket. He later talks about how the typical Seattle weather seemed to follow them around the tour, mentioning Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego. ‘Crown of Thorns’ (once again, to everyone’s surprise) is introduced as “a song that’s older than me.” Ed and Jeff were playing this game all night, they have been doing all these jumps in tandem for the past couple of shows, but tonight they kept trying to psych each other out and pretend one was going to jump, but then they wouldn’t, and start laughing. Someone had brought a huge “VOTE BUSH” banner and hung it from the 200 level; it was removed by two industrious fans before PJ took the stage. Between ‘DTE’ and ‘Insignificance’ Ed acknowledges the previous existence of the banner and said that he couldn’t believe it, and that “Just for tonight, I hope they took them out back and roughed them up a little.” The members of Supergrass were brought out and thanked, and Gary and Ed trade verses on ‘Timeless Melody.’ WARNING – X-rated notes ahead: Afterward, Ed says, “I have a bigger cock than Flea and Patrick Ewing combined, but I don’t want to brag.” Mike illustrates this by holding his hands out to give us a visual. (This was referencing a comment Flea made earlier about how he heard that [new Seattle Sonic] Patrick Ewing had the biggest cock in Seattle, except that now he was in town.) April Cameron and Justine Foy are brought out (with hugs from Ed) to perform the string arrangement for ‘Parting Ways.’ After “Parting Ways,” Jeff grabs Ed’s wine bottle, takes a LONG swig, and then hands it over to Matt, who does likewise. ‘Ledbetter’ is lavishly tagged with ‘Little Wing’ (and there is a Jimi Hendrix photo, torn out of a magazine, taped to Mike’s amp). Really strong, powerfully played show. On the setlist but not played: ‘In Hiding’ and ‘The Kids Are Alright.’

This is being distributed by blackredyellow.com in tandem with pj.sidewalkcrusaders.com, and is part of a series of the best Pearl Jam shows in existance.

Tracks 20-25: BBC London 1966: track 22 On The Side of a HILL has been already composed
in 1963 for Art Garfunkel by Paul Simon and Art gives a beautiful redention of this anti-war song!

A very interesting and worthwhile, though not superb, collection of 27 live performances and outtakes, spanning 1966 through 1969.
Two three studio outtakes from 1966 to 1967
There’s also a version of “Overs” with considerably different lyrics than the one that turned up on Bookends.
Then there are a few songs from a 1966 “studio rehearsal,” though the cover doesn’t say whether this is a recording, TV, or radio studio, and some of them sound like Paul Simon solo tracks, with no evidence of Garfunkel. Anyway, these too are noteworthy for including two songs that never appeared on their albums: the nice, folky ballad “I Wish You Could Be Here” and “Bad Blues Feeling,” the latter of which shows the influence of Simon’s 1965 stint in Britain with its Bert Jansch-type licks. Six songs from a 1966 BBC appearance again yield rarities with a cover of Tom Paxton’s “I Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound”; the anti-war “On the Side of a Hill,” which never made it onto any S&G albums; and
“A Church Is Burning,” which only came out on Paul Simon’s 1965 solo LP, The Paul Simon Song Book. The nine songs from a November 1969 concert don’t have any otherwise unavailable numbers, but do boast the best sound quality of anything on the CD. This bootleg isn’t solely notable for the rare compositions, though. The sound is very good at best and very listenable at worst. The performances are fine, and there are renditions of famous hits like “Homeward Bound,” “Sounds of Silence,” and “I Am a Rock” dotted throughout the program. ~

A new disc for the end of 1999, Village Vanguard gathers a lot of important material, some fairly common to the ROIO collector, some new to the more
“public” ROIO market.

The various studio outtakes and rehearsals have appeared before on other releases in the same sound quality.
The most striking of these is “Overs,” which has a unique organ line and very early lyrics – vastly diferent from the final version of the song.

It’s nice to get “Bad News Feeling” and “I Wish You Could Be Here” with Paul Simon performing – the latter is more commonly available in a version by The Cyrkle.
The highlight of this disc is the 9 November 1969 material. This concert, performed a few days prior to the Miami University show and immediately after the wrap of principal recording for Bridge Over Troubled Water, has a high energy level. This show was likely the first live performance of “Song For The Asking,” as Artie notes that Paul “just finished” the song. Unlike the Miami University show, there is no backing band here, likely due to the fact that studio recording tookplace in Los Angeles the day before this show. The recording quality of this section is the best on the disc, though not as clean as that of the aforementioned Miami U. show.

The other material on this disc – the “Sing Out” TV show and the BBC programme – are well-done, though the recording quality is typical of any off-air recording of the time: fairly low-fidelity, but quite listenable.

PERFORMANCE:
According to Bill Wyman, the 2nd show at Oshawa 1979 (which this torrent features) was a lot better than the 1st one.
Which makes me very grateful that there’s no good sounding recordings of the 1st show (only a piss poor recording exists of the 1st show)
Because….this 2nd show at Oshawa is a complete riot – it’s impossible to be “serious” when listening to the performance Rolling Stones and New Barbarians gave that afternoon.
The whole show is filled with mistakes from the band – Ronnie and Keith is obviously drunk as skunks – and unlike now……Jagger is drunk as well! (no need to even mention John Belushi – who introduces the show…..he’s in another dimension)

Just listen to “Respectable” – if you like to hear “the greatest R&R band in the world” being “the most out-of-it R&R band in the world”

It’s interesting to know that during “Jumpin Jack Flash” – the bass player of New Barbarians (Stanley Clarke) joined Rolling Stones.
And – due to recent published photos; he also starred on “Miss You” !
That’s quite unique. Not many people have been allowed on-stage with the Rolling Stones during the years, apart from vocals.
I would not blame Bill Wyman if he didn’t bother to be the only bass player on stage that night. I wouldn’t even blame him for leaving the entire show, and have a quiet cup of tea instead.

COMMENTS:
I’m uploading this bootleg, as it is the BEST source for this show. And…there’s a *new* release from “Godfather records” which feature the Rolling Stones part of this show. I haven’t heard that “Godfather” bootleg – but as always….Godfather copy other bootlegs, and then tweaken the sound, with EQ
So save your money – and get the best source of this must-have show here.

  1. Hey Jack Kerouac
  2. What’s the Matter Here?
  3. A Campfire Song (no Stipe vocal)
  4. Poison in the Well
  5. City of Angels
  6. My Sister Rose

  15. Gun Shy
  16. My Sister Rose (alternate take)
  17. The Painted Desert (alternate take)
  18. Don’t Talk (alternate take)
  19. Cherry Tree (alternate take)

This material is taken from the silver CD “In My Tribe Demos”, pressed by Blast Records
in the mid-1990s.

My favorite song by far is the unreleased original “The Biggest Charm”, which is more of
a traditional rock song that would sound at home on “Secrets of the I Ching” or “The
Wishing Chair”. It clearly didn’t fit the “In My Tribe” vibe, and I assume that it was
discarded for that reason. (It would have made a great b-side, though).

Interesting to note that “Poison in the Well” is still under consideration at this point,
although we know it ultimately remained unreleased until “Blind Man’s Zoo” in 1989.

I’ve read that producer Peter Asher forced the band to use a drum machine on some
songs, and on this set “What’s the Matter Here?” sure sounds drum machine-y to me. On the
second set of “In My Tribe” demos (to be uploaded momentarily), the “what’s the Matter” drums
sound different / live. Feel free to disagree – that’s just my opinion.

For the record, I generally can’t tell the difference between each song and their
“alternate takes”. Don’t expect radical differences from one version to the next, because
they are virtually identical to each other. That being said, the alternate take of “The
Painted Desert” includes vocals right to the end of the song, but on the non-alternate take
(track #9) Natalie doesn’t sing the last couple of words, “…be there.” so, at least in
that one case, there is a difference between the two (albeit a very slight difference).

“In My Tribe” demos (2nd set)
circa 1987 – certainly compiled later than the 1st set (uploaded separately)

Source: SB > ? > CD received in trade > FLAC

Sound quality: A-

Track list:

  1. Peace Train
  2. Gun Shy
  3. A Campfire Song (with early Stipe vocal)
  4. Hey Jack Kerouac
  5. My Sister Rose
  6. The Painted Desert
  7. Cherry Tree
  8. Walden (piano instrumental)
  9. Don’t Talk
  10. What’s the Matter Here?
  11. The Biggest Charm
  12. Verdi Cries
  13. City of Angels
  14. Like the Weather

This is the second set of “In My Tribe” demos, which had clearly been recorded and/or
compiled chronologially later than the first set (uploaded separately).

“Peace Train” makes its first appearance, but it doesn’t sound very much like the
finished version. It’s an interesting curiosity, but I can’t say that it’s particularly
enjoyable.

As mentioned in my previous upload (the first set of “IMT” demos), I’ve read that producer
Peter Asher forced the band to use a drum machine on some songs. Although some of the songs
in the first set (particularly “What’s the Matter Here?”) seemed to use a drum machine,
most of the percussion in this set sounds like Jerry’s live drums.

In the 1st set of “IMT” demos, “A Campfire Song” did not yet have Michael Stipe’s vocal
contribution. However, this version does include his singing, though I’m not certain
that it’s the final Stipe vocal that we actually hear on the final album version.

Interestingly, “Poison in the Well” isn’t included in this set of demos, but it looks like
“The Biggest Charm” was still under consideration. That song was obviously dropped prior
to the album’s completion, never to be officially released.

“Walden” is a pretty piano piece, but nothing of great significance.

There is a jump/skip in the middle of “Gun Shy”. Sorry – it’s on my copy, too.

Notes from the original uploader: The sound quality is quite good, being a soundboard recording from the early seventies. Unfortunately there are a couple of glitches throughout the disc that are on my original.

Interestingly this disc is reviewed on the excellent Bassman site (http://www.algonet.se/~bassman/bootlegs/91/hmv.html) but although the serial number and the artwork are exactly the same and I am absolutely certain I have an original silver, his tracklisting differs from mine. The tracklisting on the depicted artwork there shows the actual tracks on my disc and does include the “orgy instuctions” and not “Rebel Rebel” and “Panic in Detroit” as Bassman claims.

Info: An interesting read about this last Ziggy concert is to be found at The Ziggy Stardust Companion (http://www.5years.com/Retire.htm)
