Like Dylan, Springsteen, and Young, Van Morrison has gone trough periods of amazingly prolific song-writing. Like them, he has also started album projects that he has abandoned. Elite collectors have had over fifty finished outtakes to savour, many of them more interesting that what showed up on official releases. A majority of those songs have finally seen the light of day with the release of The Philosophers Stone. Unfortunately, a number of strong songs were left off that fine issue. We have redressed that injustice with the release you are holding.


Enclosed is a collection of true outtakes, not just different versions of released songs. Most date from 1970-1975, when Van started two projects: Ain’t Workin For You, and Mechanical Bliss, only to abandon them after finishing most of the songs for each. Covers include a rousing “Caledonia” and a countrified “Good Night Irene”. “Crazy Pup” and “Chick-A-Boom” are irresistable toe tapping tuens that remind one of the glory days of AM radio. “All Saints Day” and “Binding” are instrumentals featuring Van’s sax playing. “I Shall Sing” was a hit single for Art Garfunkel as “Spare Me A Little” was a hit for Jackie DeShannon, who duets with Van. “Dead Girls of London” is a trip: a satire of slavish followers of what’s cool with an appropriately, if weird, chorus. “Caledonia Sould Music” is the legendary seventeen minute studio Jam with the Caledonia Soul Express.l “The Schooner” is possibly the rarest item here. It’s the soundtrack for an Irish TV production broadcast in February 1983. With Van playing guitar, piano, and saxophone, as well as singing, it’s a beautiful, evocative score of the Irish coast.


The bonus tracks are from a 1974 German broadcast. Three of the five songs were never released or possibly not even recorded. Only “Warm Love” is a familiar song. Van’s sax is featured in the energetic “Heathrow Shuffle”, and the pensive “Buffy Flow”. This is the only known version of “I Like It Like That” while “Bulbs” was only performed briefly in 1974.


For appreciators of Van Morrison, this is truely an indespensable collection.
Notes: Art Siegel notes that only the instrumental “Buffy Flow” was not released. [A version of] “Heathrow Shuffle” finally was released on How Long Has This Been Going On, “I Like It Like That” was a song Van had released earlier with Them.

Here’s a surprisingly undercirculated Dylan track for you: the uncut version of “Omie Wise” (aka “Naomi Wise” and “Deep Waters”), from the venerable “Minnesota Hotel Tape,” recorded, as the Dylan legend has it, in Bonnie Beecher’s Minneapolis apartment by Tony Glover. (And the legend probably has its facts straight.)

Most currently circulating verions of the Minnesota Hotel Tape are sourced to a relatively low-gen copy of the source recording; the most common go back to the Wanted Man “Minnesota Tapes” commercial boot or to the even lower-gen sourced Dylantree fan project “Early Dylan.
(What’s Dr. Mike up go these days, anyway?) All of the later commercial boots have been knockoffs of one or the other of these two sources. The sound quality is very good to excellent — but the immediate source recording had developed a few minor defects over the decades, most conspicuously a long dropout in the last verse of “Omie Wise,” losing aa line of Dylan’s vocals. There were some repaired versions of “Early Dylan” floating around, but somehow the only versions to be torrented or treed simply closed the gap without patching in the missing audio.

There have been undamaged versions of the track around, somewhat higher gen, generally dating back to the vinyl era, and very hard to find without wear and tear to the grooves. About a month ago, JTT uploaded elsewhere a very clean vinyl transfer of an early LP boot which included a full version of the track.

So here you have it: a not-quite-lost, but hard to turn up, classic Dylan track from 1961. There’s nothing revelatory in the previously missing vocals, but it’s just nice to have the whole thing around again. My vinyl copy was awfully ragged.

  1. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were not recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, April 1974 like the backcover said, and some sites repeated,

  4. The Stones were again in Munich on December (7th – 15th) (without Mick Taylor!), but they did not play any of the tracks from this CD. In fact, they played Act Together, Cherry Oh Baby, Fool To Cry, I Got A Letter.
  5. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were recorded at Newbury, England, Stargroves (MJís house), Rolling Stones Mobile Studio (1974, April 10th – 15th) and London, Island Recording Studios (1974, May 20th – 25th)

Geetarz Comments:

Thanks to the folks at ZigZag, a great chronicle of the Dominos’
live shows, previously closely held only by a few traders. Quality
is average to fair to poor, as with many audience recordings from
the era, but the performances and historical importance of the shows
outshines any limitations of the actual recordings.

This is a a fascinating document of the beginning and an end of an
essential musical era, and the selection of sources provides a panorama
of how D&D’s live performances evolved over the short life of the band.
Many of the base sources are available separately, ZigZag has done a
little remastering and cleaning work, but nothing heavy handed that
detracts from the music, and in the end it’s a matter of personal
choice which source you prefer. Overall, a nice, well thought out
and packaged box set – recommended.

Notes from http://www.queenlive.ca : This Japanese CDR label bootlegged both audience sources in November 2008,
and both sound better than anything that was previously available. The first source, particularly, is a noticable upgrade.
For discs 1 and 2, Uxbridge has carefully patched in the second source (with seamless cross-fades) where there were cuts in the first source to make it as complete as possible (except for God Save The Queen). And part of It’s Late is still missing, as most of the song is missing on the other source. Discs 5 and 6 of this bootleg CDR package are a slight upgrade to what was previously available from this show.
All in all, this is a very impressive debut Queen release by this label.
