Review (excerpts from the Wavelength Magazine)

….Ned Edwards judiciously murdered “Cadillac Baby” with aplomb, and a hesitant and ultimately shortend “All Blues” lead up to Van coming on stage. He was looking really svelte, yes that word is now appropriate, but a mite pale, as the Band launched into “Only A Dream”. He was struggling with the microphone and his vocals were muted, but nothing too amiss for a first song. Unusually Matt Holland came and stood next to Van after “Only A Dream” as Van looked clearly discomforted and edgy.

The Band went into “Muleskinner Blues” as Van clutched his back and winced. and his voice had gone. Ned Edwards vocals were much louder as Van struggled through the song, his voice a whisper, the words spoken at times. He was so distracted he didn’t introduce Chris Barber onto stage, who came on and played a stonking fiery solo, but Van was obviously in pain and went off as the song ended. Matt Holland then said that “Mr. Morrison wanted to take a second” and would we like them to play for us.

Encouraged by the positive response Chris Barber came centre stage and launched into a great version of “GoinHome”. Then Chris Farlowe was asked on stage by Matt Holland. So Chris Farlowe shuffled on, saying “Bloody Hell – hes put me in a right situation here now !”, launched into a version of “Sometimes We Cry” which the Band played as hard as they could to make up for our disappointment. Chris Farlowe said “…eat your heart out, Tom Jones” , and played around with the words. As he left the stage a besuited management type came out and explained that Van had a bad fall in the afternoon and had a broken rib. He had tried to carry on with the performance but could no longer continue. The show was canceled, as was the next night`s.
So that was it.

Quite extraordinary.

This is the first recording to be sent to dime from a series Iíve called The Lost Welsh Masters. Practically every Van show in and around Wales from the 80s onwards was recorded by one diligent taper. Many have never been circulated, and in the case of one show from Bristol in 1992, the date itself was unknown to us. This one from Cardiff is the complete show which has never been heard before. A bit of talking here and there but generally excellent quality for the time. At present the exact equipment used is unknown.

Received on 2 CDRs from the taper who transcribed his complete cassettes.
To hard drive with EAC. Edited for continuous flow in Adobe Audition : edited at beginning and end. Cassette turnovers and subsequent edits audible at 42m and 1h 26m. Normalised and nothing else. Flaced with TLH to level 6.

Known Faults:
-Brown Eyed Girl: almost seamless splice
-Incomplete

It appears an audience recording of this show first appeared in 2016 as part of the “Lost Welsh Masters” series. This share is a Soundboard capture of that show unfortunately incomplete and missing the last six songs.

The raw transfer was in a bit of rough shape sounding to be from a slightly higher generation tape and on the flat side of the frequency spectrum. I’m quite pleased with the way it mastered and there is a little life in it now.

I did not add the missing tracks from the audience capture, it’s a clean cut after “What Would I Do” and has not missing portions of songs with the exception of a small, almost seamless splice during “Brown Eyed Girl”.

Thanks to my old trading partner of 30+ years MR for the files.

This is the seventh recording to be sent to dime from a series Iíve called The Lost Welsh Masters. Practically every Van show in and around Wales from the 80s onwards was recorded by one diligent taper, Graf Ritmo. Many have never been circulated ñ this is one of them.

Received on 2 CDRs from Graf Ritmo who transcribed his dat.
To hard drive with EAC. Edited at beginning and end in Adobe Audition.
Normalised and nothing else. Flacced with TLH to level 6.
Interesting show with a very chatty Van introducing Back On Top and So Quiet In Here as new arrangements by Chris White, and it sounds like Days Like This is also newly minted. Excellent Rough God with Shana and Baby Please Donít Go is a stormer. As far as I am aware this show has not been circulated although Vanomatic shows a recording available. This actual recording has certainly not been circulated.

Olav remaster:
First step: Lineage pre-work: FLAC DVD-R > WAV > CoolEdit (all files checked okay: finding that all tracks were somewhat lower in the right channel as opposed to the other) > T-RackS v2.0 (fixed by reducing the right channel volume -2.3dB)

Second step: Originally, overall volume level on all tracks was too low; a much needed boost of 8.0dB was needed. Also, overall output level is boosted with 2.8dB.

Third step and back to CoolEdit: All tracks are now split in the correct places > FLAC frontend (sector alignment) > FLACs > DIME

Practically every Van show in and around Wales from the 80s onwards was recorded by one diligent taper. [At present the equipment used is unknown]. Many have never been circulated, and in the case of one show from Bristol in 1992, the date itself was unknown to us.

This uncirculated one is a blast from beginning to end ñ itís only the third show this combo has played together and it shows how things are settling in for this early 90s band. Great quality all round. This show is about 2 hours worth played in 90 minutes! Band intros during Moondance. First known performances of Village Idiot and Green Mansions
