Watch Bob Dylan Perform “Gotta Serve Somebody”

Does anybody know what this is from? The Youtube clip was uploaded by Christ Rules Radio which I was hoping would be a cool channel that posted spiritual songs by awesome rock and roll artists but is actually just straight-up Christian acts.

Bob is in a tux and I see Kris Kristofferson and Kenny Rogers and others in the audience so I’m assuming an awards show like the Grammys or maybe the County Music Awards. But I’m sure someone out there knows.

In 1992 Columbia Records put together a massive collection of artists to celebrate Bob Dylan’s recording career. As I say in my review, at the time it must have seemed like a capstone to a long career. One that seemed like it was dying (I rather like some of Dylan’s output in the 1980s, but from a record company standpoint it certainly wasn’t his strongest decade).

The concert is pretty great, even if I haven’t listened to it since writing this review in 2014. You can read all of my thoughts from back then here.

Listen To Bob Dylan Perform The Grateful Dead’s “Brokedown Palace” in Tokyo

Dylan is obviously a fan of the Grateful Dead. He toured with them in 1987 and he’s played together with various members several times. Robert Hunter co-wrote a couple of songs with him, etc., etc.

The other night he covered “Truckin‘” in Tokyo and now he’s performed “Brokedown Palace at least a couple of times. Neither version sounds particularly well rehearsed and they drift off before the song ends. But there is something there that’s magic. I hope he does spend a little time rehearsing it (and learning all the words) so that they can perform it properly sometime soon. It would make a pretty little addition to his set.

Listen To Bob Dylan Covering “Truckin'” In Tokyo (04/11/23)

Bob Dylan’s setlists have remained pretty static for years now, especially so on his recent Rough and Rowdy Ways tours. Last night he changed things up and covered the Grateful Dead’s “Truckin'” for the first time ever.

I haven’t seen the bootlegs yet, but Ray Padget has a stream up of this song over on his wonderful Flaggin’ Down the Double Es Substack (I highly recommend subscribing to it, for it is full of wonderful Dylan thoughts.)

It is a nice recording and a pretty great version of the classic.

I’ve been working diligently on organizing all my files and getting my list up to date. I’m currently in the middle of a bunch of Bob Dylan shows. This batch is already labeled so that they sort chronologically, so all I have to do is input them onto my list and then move them to the correct folder. So, I feel like I’m following Bob around on tour. One of the really fascinating things to me about Bob on tour, at least in the last decade or so, is that because he is touring all the time, he no longer feels the need to just hit the big cities that everybody else plays at. He seemingly likes to play in more obscure corners of the world. I really feel like he’s trying to perform in every city on the planet.

In 2011 he did a big tour of Europe and on that tour, he played five shows in Germany. Now Germany is a big country, but I doubt any other artist plays five different German cities on their tours of Europe. Naturally, he plays in Berlin and Munich, but he also did stops in Oberhausen and Leipzig. No offense to those fine cities, and while they aren’t exactly obscure or tiny villages, neither are they the sorts of places big-named American rock and roll acts usually gig at.

Or maybe they do. What the heck do I know about concerts in Germany? I just think it’s cool that Bob’s list of cities he’s played a show at is enormous.
