A big giant thanks to Dalmar6677 at BTO Rocks Forum for this series.

Carefully compiled and restored from the best sources we could find. As always, we didn’t just copy the audio from the listed souces – instead, wetried to work some of our patented sonic magic when necessary. Of course, the quality still varies from dire to delightful, but you knew that already.

This release clears up a lot of speculation about the Beatlesí Star Club tapes, thanks to an unedited and unprocessed source tape (for which we cannot thank DarthDisc and the Darthelves enough). Although the recording dates are still guesses, we now know the correct order for about 2/3 of the songs. Even so, the second half of disc one is sequenced based more on smooth transitions than solid setlist information.

We tried to make sure every Star Club sound was accounted for, but not repeated: auditioning many Live At The Star Club CDs and LPS on a number of labels. Even so, we used Darthdiscís unprocessed tape wherever possible. As well as offering upgrades and previously unheard chat Red Hot, though still incomplete, is twice as long as before. ìRed SailsÖî now has an extra verse compared with the released version, while “I Saw Her Standing There” on disc two has an extra guitar solo. Conversely, we removed looped portions of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down”, “Twist And Shout” and “I Remember You.”

It’s by no means perfect, but itís the best we have at the moment. And it’s the first time we’ve listened to the Star Club tapes in years. Hopefully you’ll gain a new appreciation for these historic recordings as well.

All tracks mono, at the correct speed, and eq’d for the most coherent listening experience. Enjoy!

Here’s why the original updates:

The full third version of “A Taste Of Honey” magically appeared, just after Star Club came out. It turns out that some dialogue that we placed on disc one belongs just before it. So we cut it out of disc one, put it at the end of “Hippy Hippy Shake” and did a minor tweak to “Money” just for the sake of continuity. A change of the info file and inside artwork to reflect this, and we’re all done.

From the taper:

This was Superbowl Sunday and downtown Vancouver Granville Street was absolutely crawling with people – of every ilk. It seems I got to meet a lot of them having arrived very early to be first in line and be able to find the time to speak with the house manager at the Orpheum so they’re comfortable with my gear and what I’m doing. Thankfully, Wilco, unlike many other taper friendly bands, were very good at notifying the venue of their policies.

I managed to set up in my usual Orpheum spot with the blessing of the house manager Greg, who I’m always grateful to see working any night I’m there taping. He’s professional and polite and has helped me get my gear in on several occasions so kudos and huge thanks go out to him.

The show itself was a true joy and delight. Great lights & effects without going overboard and as I previously mentioned, the sound was stunning. The performance itself was top notch as these boys were as tight as I’ve ever seen any band. The crowd was a little bit rowdy for the first few songs but quickly settled in for the ride. The band smoothly transitioned from one song to the other without the slightest hesitation and Jeff’s banter was cute but short & sweet. At one point towards the end of the show, someone threw some yellow referee flags on stage and you’ll hear Jeff joke about them. For more details of the performance, I direct you to the several included screen captures of online reviews from that night. Although they almost all mention some couple fighting during the performance, thankfully, I neither saw nor captured it on my recording. The band did not seem affected either.

Recording location: DFC – mics placed over dress circle (lowest) balcony rail in A/B configuration 75cm’s apart
Sound Quality: SUP, A+, 10/10 – I really lucked out with the sound here and got a capture as good as any I’ve ever gotten. I could not have pulled a better capture with and reached the absolute limitations of my equipment. There is clear stereo separation as the house mix itself was in stereo. From the gentlest and quietest notes right up to the loudest cacophony of instruments; it’s all here as true as it gets. The sound that night , thanks to FOH engineer Stan Doty, was surprisingly clear and of the highest quality. The placement of my mics over the edge protected them from the closest talkers and clappers but still got enough of the audience sounds to remind you that this is a live show.

Great full band show from Steve & The Dukes, touring in support of “Copperhead Road”, this show carries two distinct memories for me. It was LOUD during the full on band sections (my ears rang for days and as I recall I forgot my trusty ear plugs for just such occasions) and he broke a ton of strings…

Quality is excellent, loud, clean sound with no audience noise around me.

This is the first transfer to CD using the original taping equipment.

If you are mostly familiar with Steve’s more recent work and in need of a show that grabs you by the throat and won’t let go then look no further, Steve was dealing with many personal demons during this time and he played like an “Angry Young Man”.

As with all my audience recordings samples attached and if you grab it, play it LOUD!

Enjoy!
