Geetarz Comments:

This is probably one of, if not the, most oft-booted Clapton shows ever, and it’s dizzying trying to keep track of all the different versions, remasters, etc. Rather than tell you which version I think you should listen to, I prefer just to put ’em up and let YOU decide.

There are debates as to the lineage of this recording – some sources list it as a soundboard, others as an impeccable audience recording. I tend to believe it is the latter, but even if I am wrong, does it really matter? If I feed you something you think is chicken, as long as it tastes like chicken, you’re full and who cares? Just enjoy the meal.

For me personally this is the 2nd official ROIO I came across of this performance, and the Slowhand Masterfile, although a bit dated now, has always stood the test of time in my opinion as a very worthy collection.

Geetarz Comments:

Definitely one of the more “focused” of EC’s 1974 shows – in less polite terms, this is one of the ones where he was not drunk!

An excellent, very crispy soundboard, instruments and vocals are all very clear with good seperation, and very little hiss, you can
even hear EC’s amplifier buzz a bit in quieter passages.

Well-done mix, although the B3 is a tad too prominent, otherwise excellent. Recommended.

======

A very good audience tape, with the only problem being the taper’s girlfriend shouting and screaming A LOT.
She screams almost all the time through ’10th Avenue’ but other than that, I can’t say it bothers that much –
I’d say it pissed me off the most when she keeps screaming during the quiet parts of Jungleland.
I don’t usually get any recordings with a lot of screaming/shouting near taper, but on this show the good sound makes up for it enough.

Thanks a lot to mr. Freezer for taping the show and sharing this gem.

Little editing note: Reduced volume during some screaming parts between songs. One of the great performances of Sandy.

======

Taper Notes:

I had a girlfriend who wanted to “sing” along all night. And she is LOUD and off-key and out of time
(you’ll love the first few songs in set 2…….) IF I had pulled that whistle out, she’d have
tooted it all night, her singing is bad enough….but it can be ignored IF you’re really a Boss fan….
(I was, this was my 7th show since 1975….in 1976 I had seat ! in row A and he jumped off the
stage in front of me while I was taping, looked at me, laughed and ran out into the audience……)
But as regards my then-girlfriend:
You’ll thrill to her duet with Bruce on Hungry Heart……
You’ll marvel at her version of Sherry Darlin’…..
You’ll be shaking your head as she joins in on the choruses of Fire….
You’ll be pissed off at me for not telling her to shut up…
But, hey, I was “in love” … she was so cute…..but she kept quiet through other shows, bands
like Ramones, Squeeze, John Cale, The Who, Snakefinger……I figured I owed her a night to get
sloppy drunk and sing and dance and howl at a concert…..Now, you too will get a chance to enjoy
her 25 years after the fact……Freezer

Angel Of Rain (Rattle Snake RS226)

From the original uploader.

According to the liner notes on Angel Of Rain (included in the torrent) : ìThis tape was only recently discovered amongst a pile of long lost
mater-tapes and it sounds fantastic. All recorded in superb stereo soundboard quality and digitally fine tuned
and remastered by The Snake, this album is now a truly legendary document of a tour rehearsal where this setlist
looked much more interesting than the actual touring playlist! Now thatís what I call a keeper for the burning
temples in flames!î It is a very good to excellent but slightly hissy stereo soundboard recording which is a joy
to listen to.

From my harddiscs a rare recording in good quality
Thanks to the original uploader.

Shortly before the full tape of this rehearsal emerged, this tape circulated.

Length 63 minutes (PA studio recording). I think this tape is slightly better quality than my full tape (approximately 20 minutes longer).
It’s unclear why this incomplete tape emerged, although as the instrumentals are missing one could guess that someone was ‘cleaning up’ the session a bit. However as some songs are totally missing (Thin Man, Girl From the North Country, Almost done, Highway 61 revisited) and the three false starts are still included that seems like a poor guess. Anyway this is the rehearsal as it first appeared.

Geetarz Comments: Disc times are 62:51/44:25.

Also features Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin on guitar, and Alphonze Mouzon on drums, during the encore.

“Badge” and “I Shot the Sheriff” from this concert were officially released on the “Crossroads 2: Live in the Seventies” box set. Please note that this audience recording is not complete, to begin with it was missing “Sheriff” and “Can’t Find My Way Home”. To appease the DIME gods and prevent confusion from anyone stupid enough to confuse an officially released soundboard track with a pretty crappy audience recording, D1T3, “Badge” has been removed from this torrent. More information about the missing track(s) can be discussed on the ClaptonBoots group (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ClaptonBoots/).

Please note that although I have run across several different lineages of this recording, they have all been missing the same 2 tracks so at this point I think it’s a safe assumption to consider that they were not recorded, or at least the full recording is not to be found in the trading pool. I hope to be proven wrong, but in the meantime this is the best sounding recording of this historic concert that I have encountered.

From the original uploader:
I spent a number of hours manually declicking this. Anyone who has used Wave Corrector knows that manually declicking is done visually as much as aurally. That is, you listen for a click then check it visually. Genuine clicks have a visual signature, completely different from anything produced by a voice or instrument. So, no one need worry. I haven’t erased any extra-musical sounds, such as those produced by a guitar pick or shirt button, for our purposes they’re considered part of the music.

While I was at it I removed the double chord hit at the start of track 3 ( they were virtually identical at the highest zoom level, a control of dynamics beyond creatures of flesh and bone), anyway, obviously an error made when the Silver was produced. I also retracked everything, as one track (can’t remember which) began at the end of the previous one.

While, due to my fiddling, some might not consider this the ‘real thing’, it’s definitely an upgrade.
