OldNeumanntapr Notes;
My friend Brad Foster in Mississippi asked me if I would record this show and I’m really glad that I did because these guys really cook. After recently recording The Brothers Comatose at SLO Brew it was nice to get to see / record another smokin’ bluegrass band. I would have liked to try another matrix, but these guys didn’t allow board access.

I got to SLO Brew at 6 pm in time for sound check and met up with Drew, the Stingdusters soundman, who gave me permission to hang my Neumanns and set up for the recording. They had brought in their own mixing board and were set up toward the center of the room. Drew had his microphones on a stand next to his board. They were about 15 feet back from where I had hung the Neumanns from the front ceiling post.

This turned out to be a really late night for me. The doors were at 8pm and the band’s first set didn’t start until 9pm, with the second set running from 10:15 to 11:40pm. After tearing down my gear I didn’t get out of SLO Brew until midnight, and then there was still a 40 minute drive home. Yawn. I had to be at work at 8am the next morning too! It was worth not getting much sleep because I was able to come away with another great recording.

I brought my camera this time and shot some pretty good photos of the band. As some of you know, in a ‘past life’ I was a print-news photographer for a couple of different county newspapers. My Nikon lenses are all manual focus, and sometimes, especially in low light, my nearly 50-year-old eyes don’t always focus correctly. 😉 These were shot with a Nikon D300 and 24mm f/2.0 AI manual focus Nikkor wide angle and 85 mm f/1.4 AIS manual focus Nikkor telephoto lenses. ISO ranged from 1600 to 2500. I used one of my photos (w/the 24 mm f/2.0 AIS) for the front cover artwork.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
My friend little Jack was the house soundman for the SLO Blues Society. Jack was a dwarf and needed help hauling the PA and setting it up at the gigs, so in exchange for my help I got to plug my tape recorder into the board. This was the first show that I did with the Tascam DA-30. It was brand new and I had just taken delivery. I used it for this show because I did not as of yet own a DAT portable. We had just pulled the W-402 jumper that afternoon, which disabled the internal SCMS circuits, and now allowed unlimited digital copies. The DA-30 (1st generation model) was a huge monolithic beast and looked really conspicuous sitting on the table next to the board, but no one said anything. The deck used a tray to load the DAT tape, so it wasn’t overly obvious that it was a tape recorder.

There was a circuit breaker that blew a little over two minutes into the show because the Blues Society volunteers had plugged the stage lights into the same circuit as the PA! The DAT shut down as well, because it was plugged into the PA power strips.
I remember running up and going back stage to flip the breaker and noticing that everything was plugged into one circuit! Because the DAT shut off when the power went off there was no gap on the tape.

The guy in the band who was the announcer (Willie Hayes) had a cordless mic, and every time he switched it on it made a “swoosh” noise. Also, the mixer board had dust in the sliders and there was some noise when Jack would adjust the sliders. It was an old 16 channel Yamaha board that came out of a club in Los Angeles that had been dismantled. We used to use it outdoors a lot for blues shows and other gigs. Plus, it was stored in a barn, so it was full of dust. It had great sound though! I had asked Jack to give me a stereo mix, so that was cool too.

The encore was not recorded. I got nervous about having the DA-30 there and I pulled cables between the end of the second set and the encore and ran the deck out to my truck. Besides, I only had a two hour DAT and it would have run out anyway.
The name of the opening band that Wells kept referring to was named “Dyrewolf”. It’s a reference to a Grateful Dead song, and was fronted by some friends of mine. The frequent “pops” throughout were made by Junior’s mouth, and are not recording errors.

After we did the load in for the show I was standing out in front of the Vets’ Hall, getting ready to walk into town to get a cheeseburger at Ed’s, a favorite place of mine at the time.
Junior Wells had just arrived to do the sound check and noticed me standing outside with my long hair and Grateful Dead T-shirt. He looked at me and said, ‘Where be the weed in this town, boy?’
I said,’Mr. Wells, I will see what I can do’, and that’s how I ended up scoring a bag for Junior Wells.

Apparently someone pressed this as a bootleg CD at one point, and when my friend John tried to upload it to a popular live music torrent site it was banned as being a ‘commercial’ source!

My friend Dave recorded this show for me with my gear because I was out of town at the time on a camping trip to Montana. As I vaguely remember, his girlfriend was running late and they got to the show at the last minute, as the house lights were going down. So, he didn’t record the first set, which ended with ‘The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald’. I recorded Gordon Lightfoot in the same venue two years later with the Neumanns and got a better recording, but this one is better than nothing. Thanks to Dave, my partner in crime, for pulling this off!

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the last time that I was to see ‘Mr. Super’, James Cotton. He was an excellent harmonica player, though in his later years I thought his voice was shot. He doesn’t seem to sing much on this recording. I was fortunate enough to get a nice stereo mix for this one.

I had my Tascam DA-P1 in a bag, under the board, because we did NOT have permission for this one. The road manager even stopped by to ask Jack, the soundman, ‘You don’t have any tape decks, do you?’ Oh no, not at all. I’ve been waiting for a long time to let this one out, and I hope people enjoy it and not try making a buck off my recording or the, deceased, artist’s work.

It was a bit worry-some. My DAT ran out before the show ended, so I unplugged the cables and ran the bag with the deck out to the truck before the house lights came on. The beginning of the show is cut because, as I remember, someone from the band was hanging around the board area when the show started and it would have been a dead giveaway to be seen bending down and reaching into the bag to start the DAT.

Thanks to Flying M for his expertise with the post production work.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was the first time that I’d seen ‘Mr. Super’, James Cotton. He blew a great harp but I thought his vocals were really raspy. I’ve seen a few harmonica players at the Blues Society over the years and thought that James Cotton was one of the better ones. I liked his playing better than say, Charlie Musselwhite, but their styles aren’t quite the same so maybe that’s not a fair comparison. Some drunk woman from the audience got up onstage and ‘performed’ with the band. I don’t know if you’d call it singing or just moaning but people laughed and the band seemed to find it amusing. This might have been the first time that I used my Sony D5 to record one of the SLO Blues Society shows. I had recently purchased it from my friend Jack in Salt Lake City when he made the transition to DAT. Thanks, as always, to my friend Little Jack, the house soundman for the Blues Society, for allowing me to plug into his Yamaha soundboard. His gear was old but had good sound. (He told me once that the mixing board came out of a club in Los Angeles that was being torn down and he bought it from a pro-audio recycler.) I was a volunteer on the sound crew for the SLO Blues Society for most of the 1990s until Jack retired in the very early 2000s. Some shows we had permission for and some we did not, though Bob, the President of the Blues Society would always ask for a copy of the tapes!

OldNeumanntapr Notes
This was probably the best of the SLO Blues Society shows that I have ever recorded. For some reason the SLO Vets’ Hall was not available so the show was moved to the Officer’s Club at Camp San Luis Obispo, the CA National Guard Base, just outside of town on Highway 1. I seem to remember the club not allowing us to use the bar on site, but they didn’t mind if we brought our own alcohol. One of little Jack’s friends on the sound crew went into town and brought back an ice chest full of Corona which we made good use of. (I was on the sound crew for the SLO Blues Society and was lucky enough to have been able to plug various tape recorders into the board over the years. ‘Little Jack’ was a dwarf sound man who needed help moving sound equipment so I worked with him as a volunteer for most of the 1990s until he retired in the early 2000s. Jack was a Dead Head and understood the need for the archival of live music performances. His first Dead show was the closing of the Fillmore West in 1971.) The DA-30 is a huge beast of a studio deck and I had to hide it with a beach towel under the board because the venue and the Blues Society personnel was not wise to the recording. The vocal microphone had a bad connection and would pop occasionally, which pissed Joe Lois Walker off tremendously. He was supposed to do two sets, which was the standard SLO Blues Society fare in those days, but he was so disgusted that he left at the end of the first set. I’ve never released this show because of the microphone problems, but my hat is off to Flying M for working his magic on this one and fixing its problems. Also, I had asked Jack, the sound man, to give me a stereo mix before the set started but he forgot. Half way through the set he said, ‘Oh, you wanted a stereo mix’, and adjusted the pan pots before I could say ’No! Don’t change it in the middle!’ So, the recording starts off monaural and morphs to stereo half way through.

Flying M Notes;
What a beautiful recording!
A treat to listen to that is for sure.
The loud microphone pops are gone or tamed down to a reasonable level.
iZotope RX was made for repairing this sort of noise.
As it was I had to change the settings to almost no effect using the “attenuate unwanted signal” tool in iZotope RX.
Only used the tool below 300 Hz at the point where the noise happened, leaving some of the pop there but with less power behind it.
There are still 2 places where the “boom” gets really loud but not speaker blowing loud anymore.
A balance between your request to leave some of these microphone noises in and rescuing the recording.
Took two passes from end to end before I was satisfied.
I think the results are what you would have hoped for initially.
Glad to be able to repair this and make it something you can play loud without holding your breath waiting for the explosions.

OldNeumanntapr Notes; (2017)
I can’t believe that it’s been exactly 20 years since I recorded this Ray Davies solo show. This was the only time that I’ve seen Ray, and I really enjoyed his performance that night. This was a night of music, interwoven with storytelling. For me, a song’s greatest impact is the story that it tells, and these songs wove the tale of the Kinks from start to end.

My friend Dave procured a block of seats in the front row and I was fortunate to receive one. I can’t begin to list all the wonderful concert experiences that I have had as a direct result of Dave’s generosity and influence. I was sitting to the left of his friend Rick, another taper, who told me as the show was beginning that, “There would be a lot of singing along at this show and I was going to have to ‘roll with it’”. I thought that was funny so I titled the first track of my recording after his quote, you ‘Gotta Roll With It.’

I miss seeing / recording shows at the Cuesta auditorium. It was a shoe-box type auditorium located on the old campus which used to be part of the Camp San Luis CA National Guard army base. The theater, built back during WWII has since been closed down having not been deemed worthy for a seismic safety retrofit, and is slowly rotting away. The theater had peeling paint and a leaky roof but the acoustics were great!

There is a very brief fade during the applause between “Tired Of Waiting For You” and ‘The Little Green Amp.’ There is a space after “See My Friends.”
“Autumn Almanac” cuts in. There is a space between “Art School Babe” and ‘The Kinks Were Formed > You Really Got Me Story.’ “A Well Respected Man” fades in and there is a small space in the beginning of “Lola.” This show has been torrented once before, by my friend Kling Klang, but this is the first time that I tagged the files myself.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the second time that I had the pleasure of recording John Prine in concert, after catching his show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz six months previously. That show had some problems, as we got there late and had to stand on the floor among the loud rowdy crowd.
The Cuesta College show was nice because it was in the old Cuesta Auditorium and we had reserved seats. The theater, built back during WWII, is located on the old Cuesta campus and was previously part of the Camp San Luis National Guard army base. The theater, now condemned and slowly falling into ruin, had great acoustics though it looked like hell with pealing paint and a leaky roof. It was deemed not worthy to be retrofitted for earthquake safety. It’s been vacant since the mid 2000s, but I was fortunate to have seen and recorded many great shows there over the years.

I always seem to miss the opening of ‘Spanish Pipedream’, as Prine runs on stage and starts the song when the lights drop. It took a minute to load the DAT in the machine and start recording. (The Sony D7 and D8 recorders did not have a power switch, but would go into a sleep mode after a period of inactivity once the tape was loaded. I had problems on more than one occasion of the recorder mis-loading a tape when I tried to start recording from sleep mode, so I always started the recording directly after loading. Knowing when to start was always the biggest question.)

This show had a great set list. I really enjoyed hearing ‘The Late John Garfield Blues’, ‘Let’s Talk Dirty In Hawaiian’, ‘The Bottomless Lake’, and ‘Sabu Visits The Twin Cities Alone’. I don’t know if I’ve heard ‘Sabu’ since. It’s a great song. I like the story that John tells on the ‘John Prine Live’ CD from the mid 80s.

John still had his voice back in the 90s. It would get worse as time went on, a victim of cigarettes I imagine, until he would have to have throat surgery. I wish I would have been able to record him earlier, back in the 80s.

The last track is a taper outro. I liked to let the recorder run when I left the venue. Sometimes the stories from friends were funny. There is a one or two second break between the last encore song and the outro. Feel free to omit the last track if you so desire. This one is kind of funny because directly after the show As we were about to leave the auditorium my I turned to my friend Dave’s friend Wayne and asked if he wanted one. He said, “Want What? You’ve got a TAPE? I’d Love it! You are getting very very proficient!”

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the second time that I’ve recorded Tom Russell, the first being at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara in 1999 when he opened for Peter Himmelman. I had no idea who Tom Russell was, at that show, but I was an instant fan. Tom Russell is an awesome storyteller with a great sense of humor. I wasn’t a fan of The Grange Hall and I thought it was a cold echoey building made of cinderblock with no atmosphere at all. The light show consisted of two naked incandescent light bulbs without shades. It rained the night of this show, and since I was the third person in line, fortunately I got to hang out under the front door overhang and was able to keep from getting wet. I’d never been to the Grange Hall before so I elected to leave my Beyer preamp at home and run the Neumann KM100 amplifier stages directly into the XLR jacks of the Tascam recorder to save space. Tom was in rare form this night. He made jokes about his brother selling bad horses, and told stories about a wild night he had with his brother chasing some poachers who ended up turning a gun on them. Tom also told stories about playing football for Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo in the 60s and joked about buying the ‘Buckhorn’ bar in Cuyama, a little town in the middle of nowhere on highway 166 midway between Santa Maria and Bakersfield. He was also making fun of the loud and rowdy staff in the adjacent room. It was a fun show even though the room was less than ideal.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was another weeknight show, this time on a Wednesday, and I had to hurry up to SLO Brew right after work. I was no longer using DAT recorders and had just purchased my Tascam DR100mkII flash recorder, which made things a bit easier. I really like James’ imagery in his music. I guess being the son of a famous author has its benefits! I don’t know why I elected to put this on CD first rather than just transferring directly to the computer, unless I was just used to doing things that way with DAT. This was the last time that I saw James in concert.
