This was billed as a free show, but we were still hesitant to bring the Nakamichi CM-300’s. I wished I would have, because it was a completely free and open taping event. I even saw a Pro video camera there. I ran the Aiwa CM-30 microphone clipped to the outside of a hat, and stood as tall as I could. Weir & Wasserman opened for a reunited Jefferson Airplane, which was the highlight of the afternoon. Hot Tuna also played an acoustic set in the middle of the Airplane set. It was amazing weather, which some people said felt like earthquake weather. About 12 days later (or so) the big earthquake struck the bay area, collapsing freeways and closing down the Bay Bridge. Freaky. After this afternoon set was over, we hoofed it down to Shoreline for the Grateful Dead show that night. We got into the taper section late and only were able to record the second set.

My ex wife Nikki and I rode to San Francisco with my friend Taper Ron, from Oakland, because I was leery of parking two cars at Golden Gate Park, but maybe it would have been better if we had so we didn’t have to go back to Oakland after the show and make our way down 880 through the East Bay.

This was technically my first Front Of Board audience recording.

These were my last Dead shows that I recorded at Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, and from what I remember, it was the last time that the Dead would play at Kaiser. They were banned from the venue because of unruly Deadheads using the neighbor’s yards for bathrooms and also clogging the streets because Kaiser didn’t have good parking facilities. We always parked on the street bordering Peralta Park, or in the little cul-de-sac to the south of the convention center. I saw my first Grateful Dead concert at Kaiser on February 9 1986 and will never forget it.

These were the last two shows that I recorded with the Superscope EC 7 Cardioids.

Additional Notes [Sept 2024];
I remember that there were circular ramps at the corners of the building that we would run up on our way to the tapers section in the balcony. It was always a special place to see, and record, the Dead and from what I hear the convention center has been closed for a while because it is need for expensive renovations. Apparently the building, which held 7,000 people and opened in 1915, was closed in 2006 and is currently being renovated. The following paragraph was taken from an online article about the Kaiser renovations, Sept 9, 2022;

“During its golden era, the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center hosted luminaries from the musical and political worlds. Elvis Presley, James Brown, and the Grateful Dead were among the artists that performed at the arena. World political figures like Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, and others also graced its hallways. In 1918, the auditorium served as a makeshift hospital during the Spanish flu pandemic. It served a less honorable purpose in 1924 when over 800 Klu Klux Klan members gathered inside the arena for a cross-burning ceremony. More recently, in 2012, Occupy Oakland protesters attempted to take over the building during its “move-in day,” which resulted in a violent clash with police and the arrest of over 400 people. This past March, a demolition crew discovered a mummified body inside one of the walls.”

This was my second series of Dead shows at Cal Expo, the first being May 3 and 4 1986. I tried recording the May 3 1986 show but it was beyond a dismal failure so I erased it. This was the second show that I recorded with the use of my friend Gene’s Nakamichi CM 300 shotguns, and also the show that I met John Lech, a taper from Malibu who patched into me with a Sony WM-D3 PRO cassette. John would purchase a triple set of Nakamichi CM 300s the following year, and I would end up buying them from him in late 1990. It was either this show or the previous night that a deadhead that was way too high blundered into the tapers section and stumbled around and almost stepped on our gear. Three tapers took off after him and I don’t know if they ever caught up with him. People would always see this big dark zone and try to walk through, not knowing that there was several thousand dollars of high end recording gear resting on blankets.

I lost my eyeglasses the night before after leaving them on the sink in the restroom of a Denny’s restaurant while in a stoned stupor, so I had to suffer with my nearsightedness throughout the Sunday Dead show and also the long 300-mile journey back to San Luis Obispo County. (More about THAT later).

I remember that my friends Dick, Dave, and some of their other friends left the amphitheater before the end of the show to try and beat the rush and ended up missing the ‘And We Bid You Goodnight’ encore! You just never know what you’re going to hear so it’s best to stay until the fat man sings! That was a HUGE part of the night for me, because I have always loved that song and I never thought that I’d get to hear it.

Dave had a horrible trip home because Dick wouldn’t allow Dave to check the oil and water on Dick’s ’68 Chevy C20 pick up truck and the motor ended up seizing when it ran out of both oil and water. They were stranded near Los Banos at 3 am and had to get a motel for the night and have the truck towed home later. Dave said that he had taken some speed to stay awake for the drive through the San Joaquin Valley back to SLO County (for some reason Dick refused to take interstate 5 and instead stayed on the back two lane roads) so Dave couldn’t sleep at all, while Dick and Willie, his Airedale, slept just fine.

Nikki and I had a late dinner at Cindy’s all-night restaurant in Davis, just west of Sacramento on interstate 80, and stayed until about 3 am visiting with my friend Taper Ron who lived in Oakland. We had taken separate cars to the show, as we had come up from Morro Bay, and we got a real late start to our trip home. Sleeping in the cab of a 1970 Datsun truck was no fun (Nikki refused to let me sleep in the camper shell while we were on the road because she had a seatbelt rule) and I woke up in the East Bay when the freeway had a detour and Nikki got lost on a side street. I shook my head to clear the cobwebs, and looked around. By this time it was about 4 am and I saw the hills in one direction so I told her to turn right and we hit the freeway in about six or seven blocks. She woke me up again just north of Salinas (‘Somewhere near Salinas…it was my turn to drive’…) and I had to take the tiller as the sun was coming up and blinding me. What a nice way to wake up!

This was my second excursion to Cal Expo in Sacramento, the first being May 3rd and 4th 1986. I remember that it was hot as hell in Sacramento in August, and our old 1970 Datsun truck had never heard of air conditioning!

This was the very first show that I used my friend Gene’s Nakamichi CM 300 shotguns in which to record. I didn’t ask him. He volunteered them. I met Gene at the Saturday, June 13 1987 Ventura Fairgrounds Dead show when he patched a Marantz 420 into my Sony TC-153SD. We’ve been friends ever since. Later in 1989 he would purchase a grey-market Sony TCD-D10 DAT recorder, before the US Government was even letting them into the country. In his words, ‘You can buy ANYTHING off a truck in New York City!”

The Nakamichi microphones were a definite step up from my old Superscope EC 7 cardioid condensers, but I still think I like the vocals better from the cardioids. (In later years I switched to running the Nakamichi CP 1 cardioid capsules on the CM 300s at venues like Shoreline where we were outdoors and didn’t need the extreme side rejection of the ‘guns.) The CP 4 shotgun capsules did really help to tame the reverberant sound from large indoor arenas but they could sound midrange heavy and kind of flat and lifeless. In 1990 at Cal Expo we would experiment with mixing one CM 300 with a CP-3 Pinpoint Omni capsule with two CM 300 shotguns and open up the sound a bit more. The three-mic mix worked well for cassette masters, where the analog tape hiss tended to help cover up the noise that the mixer induced, but when we switched to DAT in the 90s’ it was really apparent that the mixer lowered the signal-to-noise ratio.

This was the night that I met my friend Jack, from Salt Lake City, when he patched his D6 into mine. Again, we have been friends ever since. I’m sure that I’m not the only one who has developed long lasting friendships from meetings in the tapers section at Dead shows!

It was either the Saturday or Sunday ’89 Cal Expo show that a person wandered into the tapers section while obviously way too high and freaked out and ran through to the other side. Whoever it was just barely missed stepping on my deck. I remember a couple of tapers who ran after the guy, through the right side. I would like to think that the person didn’t mean to cause any harm and blundered in by mistake but one never knows. People would often try to walk through the tapers section at outdoor shows in the dark because they would see a big black open area and not realize the vast amounts of recording gear that was there in their way. One of the ‘Taper Creeds’ was that you ALWAYS helped out your neighbors by turning your flashlight on and pointing it at their gear when someone tried to saunter through the section. I have had drunks try and brace themself by grabbing my microphone stand to steady themselves and I would always cringe and try to get rid of them quickly and send them on their way.

The drum solo on the Saturday show was really short, and I have it in my notes that Billy walked off stage abruptly.

After the show on Saturday my ex wife Nikki and I stayed the night in the camper shell of our green 1970 Datsun truck while parked in the parking lot of a Denny’s restaurant. We were poor and couldn’t afford a motel room so I picked a Denny’s parking lot because it was a 24 hour restaurant and figured that no one would notice a truck parked there all night. I do remember using the restroom at the Denny’s and washing my face and accidentally leaving my eye glasses on the sink. Of course they were gone when I realized what I had done the next morning and I had to deal with my nearsightedness for the Sunday Dead show and also with the 300 mile drive back to San Luis Obispo County. (I had silver ‘Art-Craft Circles’ which were English glasses that were like the glasses that John Lennon wore. I had to order a new pair immediately.)
