OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the last Bridge School Benefit that I recorded, and the first with the custom hat-loaded Nyquist Omnis. We had a seat this time, as compared to the first two years in 1991 and 1992 when I froze my behind off up on the lawn. Shoreline can get cold for the Bridge shows, especially because they are always in October or November. I had seen The Barenaked Ladies before, in Avila Beach, and I knew they were good and funny as well. I hadn’t ever seen The Wallflowers, R.E.M., Sarah McLachlan, or Phish before so that was a treat. I really liked the acoustic Phish show, much more than when I saw them play electric. They really seemed to be having fun during their set. I really enjoyed hearing Sarah and Phish sing the Cat Steven’s song ‘Sad Lisa’. I noticed that when REM played there was someone recording with large diaphragm microphones, which could have been AKG 414s. I’ve never seen that source circulate before however. My friends Dave and Brian were with me, and my ex-wife Nikki, at this show. I think Dave had a single seat down in the 100 sections, but Brian was seated next to me on my right. At the end of the Phish show I turned to Brian and said, “I was waiting for you to say, There’s that scruffy guy with the hat again”, which is what he said, referring to Neil Young, at a previous Bridge School Benefit.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the third Bridge show in a row that I recorded. This year we had reserved seats in SEC 204. It was nice having a place to sit but I think recording off the repeaters gave a better sound to the recording (Unless you were blessed to have SEC 100 series seats.) I love hearing Neil acoustic, and especially with other guest musicians. This was the only time I’d ever seen Warren Zevon, or Melissa Etheridge. I don’t remember why I elected not to record Heart. Maybe I was trying to conserve tape? I don’t know. I don’t personally care for the band Van Halen, but it was nice to see Eddie playing acoustic. I like Sammy’s acoustic playing a lot. I had first heard him play acoustic on a recording of the ’89 Bridge show. Those tapes were the catalyst that made me want to see and record a Bridge show for myself. I love recording Bonnie Raitt, and have enjoyed her music ever since I recorded her opening for the Dead on NYE in ’89, but Simon and Garfunkel was the reason I was there that night. My ex wife Nikki and I had listened to a LOT of Simon and Garfunkel albums when we were first married in 1984. That set was like a dream come true, because I never thought I would get to see them reunite.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the first time that I had seen Blues Traveler. I didn’t know that they allowed recording. I guess I should have asked for a board patch but instead I ran up to the balcony to get a front row spot. The Nakamichi CM-300s probably would have sounded better but for some reason I chose to go with the little Aiwa stereo mic. It was a pretty good show and I still have the t-shirt! The recording is OK but would have sounded better with the CM-300s. I added it to etree because I noticed that this date wasn’t listed at all in the master list. Thanks to Dave Mallick for the help with the set list.

Oldneumanntapr Notes-
This was a fun show. David Lindley & Wally Ingram played four songs to open the show, and it just rolled on from there. Instead of separate sets from each artist, they would all play together and swap lead vocals. The show ran about 3.5 hours! The Santa Barbara County Bowl is a very intimate place to see shows, as it’s small (3,000 capacity) and nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara. The security is really tight there, and it took three of us to bring in my recording equipment. The security staff at the bowl, from what I’ve been told, are all off-duty SB County Sheriffs deputies, and they DO have the authority to arrest people on the spot, as apposed to most venue security who will either confiscate your batteries and blanks, or kick you out of the venue if you are caught taping.

It was difficult to record, not only because of the ever-present security staff, but also because the show started durning daylight hours. I wanted to record David Lindley & Wally Ingram, as they opened the show, but it’s really hard to stealth record in broad daylight.

I had a problem at the time with my Beyer MV100 microphone preamp because of a loose XLR input jack, so I had two channel drop outs on this recording that I had to repair. I later had the jack re-soldered, which fixed the problem. While I was at it, I also went in and reduced the over enthusiastic crowd noise wherever I could. I think it made a big difference.

During one song someone seated near me was trying to get everyone to stand and I didn’t want to comply so there is a brief moment of talking from this guy that I couldn’t completely remove. ‘Don’t you want to stand up?’ NO.

I remember that one of my friend Dave’s friends, a lady that I think worked at KOTR FM in Cambria (Not Carol Jo, who talked all the way through my Miles Davis Cal Poly recording in 1990), sat next to me while Dave was up front in a closer row. She dropped my binoculars onto the concrete floor, which I could have done without, but I think they didn’t come away with any damage.

I think mine is one of the better recordings from this mini tour, with only the final show at the Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington, that maybe a little better. That show was uploaded without any recording lineage, which is a pet peeve of mine, so I was unable to tell what gear was used to make the recording.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:

Capps For Congress benefit. The complete line-up was Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan, John Trudell & Bad Dog, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley.

To provide a bit of political history for this show, in 1996 Walter Capps was running for the 22nd District of California and this show in Avila Beach was a campaign fundraiser. Capps was once again running against Andrea Seastrand (she won the previous election and was based in the adjacent Shell Beach, so this show had an appropriate setting). Capps won the seat in November, but he sadly passed away in October 1997. His seat was held by his widow, Lois Capps, ever since when she won a 1997 special election (although her district is now known as the 24th District due to redistricting). The seat is now held Salud Carbajal.

For the Jackson Browne set, “I”m Alive” cuts in as he is playing his guitar. For the Don Henley set, “Through Your Hands” fades in before the first verse begins. There is some mic noise (mostly between songs) and there is occasional audience noise (talking, screaming, clapping along).

This show took place at the same venue where the Avila Beach Blues Festival was held every year until recently. I had friends who were volunteering at this show and they brought my blanket in for me and placed it front and center, about 8th row. I couldn’t ask for a better spot!

Taping was allowed at this show but I asked not to bring in my microphone stand, so the Nakamichi’s had to go on a T-Bar and be hand held throughout the show. The old Cuesta College Auditorium had such great acoustics, having been built on the old campus during World War Two.
Sadly, it was deemed not to be worth retrofitting for earthquake standards and is slowly falling into decay. I included a photo that i took of the building in 2018.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was my first Bridge School Benefit and I was so glad to be there. I’ve seen/recorded four Bridge School Benefits and this one was my favorite. I don’t know if it was the band line up, or because it my first Bridge show, or if it was because of Bill Graham’s recent passing, but there was a lot of energy in the air. I really wanted to record a Bridge show, after having obtained 1st generation cassettes of the 1989 show. I believe that this is the first time that I recorded Neil Young. My friends Dave, Brian, and Rick met up with my ex wife and me at the show. They had reserved seats, while I wanted to be near the repeater speakers on the lawn to record. Dave told me that, though there was a pat down search getting into Shoreline, they would allow you to bring in food. I had the idea to take a small box of saltine crackers and hollow it out. I cut down the cellophane wrappers and only left about 15 crackers in each wrapper. My D6 fit perfectly inside the box, and I left it open with the remaining crackers exposed. We brought in a small tupperware of sliced cheese and cold cuts, and some sealed bottled water. I had a canvas bag with a solid sturdy bottom to hold everything. I took the microphones and custom XLR >RCA shortened cables and used a velcro Ace Bandage to conceal them on my body. Fortunately, being November, we had heavy coats that further concealed the gear. (It was really cold up on that lawn in November!) I opened the bag when we went through security, being careful to not let the gate people notice the added weight of the recorder inside, and we went in without a hitch. I ran the Nakamichi microphones in a Levi jacket, with holes sewn into the front two pockets so the capsules would protrude. I used hollowed out 35 mm film can lids to go over the microphone bodies to keep them from falling through the bottom of the pockets. As long as I stood near the repeater speakers it worked really well. I also had long hair that I wore down to further conceal the microphones. The recorder went into a hip pack so I was totally self contained. This was a really emotional weekend, with the recent death of Bill Graham. Tracy Chapman dedicated ‘Amazing Grace’ to Bill during her set. Nils Lofgren, who played the most touching set of any Bridge set I ever saw, made repeated references to Bill and told a story of getting caught by Graham trying to sneak into the Fillmore East. Nils Lofgren’s song ‘Big Tears Fall’ was very powerful. Nils asked the crowd if there were any parents in the crowd, and I remember thinking of our daughter Lucy, who was born in May of ’91 and was at home with Nikki’s folks while we went to the shows. I had just recorded two very emotional Grateful Dead shows at the Oakland Coliseum on October 27 and October 31. The 10/27/91 show was the first Dead show after Bill’s helicopter crash, (They opened with Bill’s favorite Dead song ’Sugar Magnolia’), and the Halloween show featured Ken Kesey as a special guest. After the Bridge School Benefit show, Nikki and I drove my ’67 VW camper bus to Atherton where we parked in front of my friend Karl’s friend’s parent’s house. Sunday morning we got up early and drove to Golden Gate Park to record the Bill Graham Benefit, which was another emotional all day event. It was billed as ‘Laughter, Love, And Music’. It was quite the weekend. I heard later that Dave, who didn’t stay overnight to see the Sunday Bill Graham memorial concert, ran out of gas driving his friends home in the middle of the night near Santa Margarita, CA.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
I recorded this at the short-lived Bonnema Brewery in Atascadero. It had been a restaurant and was converted to a bar / restaurant / brewery with a small stage and an even smaller airplane hanging from the rafters. I recorded BOC and also The Fixx at this venue. The brewery only lasted a few years until the owner went bankrupt and the place closed down in 2005. It’s back to a restaurant now with another name.
