Scott Muni, acting as this show’s emcee, makes a reference to how the audience is about to hear some “real” music just before bringing on Al Di Meola and his solo band for an electrifying showcase of jazz-rock fusion. It is almost as if the announcer is promising the audience redemption for having had to endure corporate rock and disco. Remember, this was 1978 …

Di Meola, a Berklee School of Music graduate whose blistering guitar style married the best elements of rock and jazz, had just left Return to Forever, the groundbreaking fusion band that included Chic Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Lenny White on drums. During this time he was among the most celebrated jazz-rock musicians on the scene. Two years prior, while still in Return to Forever, Di Meola had released Land of the Midnight Sun; he followed it in 1977 with Elegant Gypsy, which went Gold in the US. The success was driven by FM radio stations, an unlikely benefactor given their begrudging support of jazz-fusion.

This show, recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour at New York’s Palladium Theater, features an all-star band that was assembled in order to record the 1978 album, Casino. With Steve Gadd on drums, Barry Miles on keyboards, bassist extraordinaire Anthony Jackson, and a percussion section including Mingo Lewis, these guys could really play, even if they hadn’t been working together for very long. For the set, Di Meola mixes material from his three solo albums, including Casino. “Chasin’ the Voodoo,” “Dark Eye Tango,” “Short Tails Of The Black Forest,” and “Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars,” are played with speed and precision, and the power of the Gadd/Jackson rhythm section is undeniable.

Things are thrown through a curve when Di Meola offers up a new arrangement of RTF bandmate Chick Corea’s jazz classic, “Captain Senór Mouse.” With most of the songs clocking in at five to ten minutes, Di Meola is eager to give his side players considerable space and time to solo and stretch out. Other highlights include “Midnight Tango” and the powerful “Race With The Devil On The Spanish Highway.” The band finishes its encore to a thunderous response from the crowd. Not knowing any other new material, the band performs a reprise of “Chasin’ the Voodoo.”

Di Meola has remained a jazz fusion superstar ever since, although he is focusing much more on acoustic music and more straightforward jazz leanings these days.

Notes:

This is the third date of four at Madison Square Garden in New York during June 1974. Probably
the best sounding of the 4, the only fault is a slight fluctuation in vocal levels towards the
end. A messy end of show jam results in Roger storming off stage during Punk, not because of
mic failure (as audio evidence proves) but maybe due to the overall feeling on stage and in
the band at the time…

Won’t Get Fooled Again contains a cut just prior to Roger’s scream. See Me Feel Me contains
two cuts, both towards the end.

Notes
here’s a really nice recording of the band from one of richard manuel’s last shows. they played a few nights at the lone star cafe in nyc and i had the pleasure of attending a couple nights. it was a blast seeing them in such a small venue. i didn’t make the recording but got it directly from the guy that did. it’s an excellent sb from the late show on feb. 6,1986. i understand that most of the shows from that week are around in similar quality but this is the only one i have. as a bonus, steve winwood, who was in town working on his own project, sits in on the last song but don’t get too excited about that since you can barely tell he’s there. i’ve seen this listed as feb. 8 but i’m going with the master source on this. as always, all info is in the file.

They recorded some songs there.

I purchased this numbered limited edition bootleg single, back in the “old days” from one of them “dodgy” mail order services, I expect some time after 8th February 1984, if the release code is to be believed. 😉 In fact, I purchesed 3 copies, expecting that one day they’ll have some value, considering it was limited to 500 copies. I received Numbers 298, 302, and 303. I guess the “inner Circle” got the important numbers. 😆

In any case, my copies have had very limited airings over the last 25 years, and so this vinyl rip is probably as good as it gets.

Many, many thanks to the dutch long time TH + TTC fan Hans Devente, (Madtaper) for this recording !!!!!!!!!!

He´s a good friend with the bands over 30 years……..

I got in contact with Hans some months ago.

I was very proud to get his TH tape collection in wave format, after he posted some mp3 stuff on a blog.

Anyway. I gave him some money for his work to transfer all the tapes.

He has a fantastic collection all over he years and most of them never saw the light before !!!!!

Some more stuff will come, and this one is the 4th.

BTW: I made 15 tracks out of that wave file and “I Zimbra” includes the “Intro” (it was better to cut) and “Houses In Motion” is in 2 tracks (pert 1 & 2).

So: SHARE & ENJOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

comments:
I previously posted this show neglecting to delete a released track, causing it to be banned. I am sorry for that and am reposting with the one (and thankfully only) released track removed this time. A high energy outdoor Talking Heads summer show in the Big Apple. It’s a nice recording, not too much crowd noise and a little better deck and mikes were used for this, than the L.A. one that’s going up (after it gets a new transfer, I was all set to post it then found out it’s offspeed.) as a seperate companion to this, a sort of Heads in the West and East U.S.A. of this fine tour they did in late 80 and early 81 with Adrian Belew. This one is a little shorter show, even before removing the released track, (I think this is otherwise complete except a few seconds missed at the end of 1 song, I think it’s track 9- houses), they’re both nice concerts. This one has both my favorite songs of this or any Talking Heads tour, and hot versions of both, Crosseyed and Painless and Born Under Punches. (no crosseyed in LA, even though it’s a full 80 minute show). I am not certain that this is an almost complete show, but I think it is. For those of you who may think New York City is far north enough to be refreshingly cool for an August concert in Central Park- uh, usually not. I don’t know how hot it was this day, but with 10 million people and almost as many cars, planes and busses driving around, summer in NYC can get quite uncomfortable (although compared to a summer in Texas the weather and air probably seems refreshing) and a concert by the TH would likely not be their usual 80-90 minute set in those conditions. This sounds like a summer concert, a hot weather concert and a hot concert. Not just a
few good songs, they all sounded well played and it was a good setlist.

Do not sell this recording.
