Disc 1: 09 & 10
Disc 2: 06 & 07
Disc 3: 06 & 07

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was billed as a free show, but we were still hesitant to bring the Nakamichi CM-300s. I wished I would have, because it was a completely free and open taping event. I even saw a Pro video camera there. I ran the Aiwa CM-30 microphone clipped to the outside of a hat, and stood as tall as I could. Weir & Wasserman opened for a reunited Jefferson Airplane, which was the highlight of the afternoon. Hot Tuna also played an acoustic set in the middle of the Airplane set. I thought that the sound at the show was heavy on midrange and it shows in the recording, unfortunately. Bill Graham made a comment during the show and said that he hoped both bay area baseball teams would square off for the World Series and they would close the Bay Bridge, for a party. It was amazing weather, which some people said felt like earthquake weather. 16 days later the big Loma Prieta Earthquake struck the bay area, collapsing freeways and closing down the Bay Bridge. Freaky. After this afternoon set was over, we hoofed it down to Shoreline for the Grateful Dead show that night, having also recorded the Dead show the night before. (What a weekend!) We got into the taper section late and only were able to record the second set.

My ex wife Nikki and I rode to San Francisco with my friend Taper Ron, from Oakland, because I was leery of parking two cars at Golden Gate Park, but maybe it would have been better if we had so we didn’t have to go back to Oakland after the show and make our way down 880 through the East Bay.

Show Was All One Set But Broken Up With An Acoustic Portion In The Middle

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was my VERY FIRST recording made at the Ventura Theater, and was recorded with one of my two Aiwa CM-30 stereo microphones, but unfortunately this particular mic had a problem with the right channel. I was able to repair the missing channel and add some digital delay in Audacity, details described above in transfer notes.

I probably should have used my Nakamichi CM-300s for this show, but I went with the Aiwa to be on the safe side. I did use the Naks for Arlo Guthrie later in March of ’91 at the Ventura Theater and they did sound a bit better.

The Ventura Theater was built in the 1920s and is of ‘Spanish Colonial’ architecture. It was converted to a dinner theater at some point and all the seats on the floor area removed to make room for large dinner tables arranged in three tiers (because of the original sloped floor of the theater.) The PA was upgraded in the late 90s and sounded much better, whereas before it could sound boomy, especially in the balcony being at the back of the hall, but it was a safer bet for recording as compared to up front in the dining area. The crowd was always quieter in the balcony and there was less security. In later years a wall was built at the back of the main part of the theater behind the dinner tables and the balcony, which was over the bar, was permanently closed off. I have recorded there several times during the 1990s but I don’t think I’ve been there since.

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was a show that I went to with my friend Dave, and my friend Linda from work. I drove my ’91 F150 from SLO Country to Santa Cruz and back, after the show. I bought a Hot Tuna T shirt that was blue tie died with a Hot Tuna logo that I had for years until it finally disintegrated from too much use. I remember that this show I saw Jorma sitting at the bar in the Catalyst when we came in, and considered briefly asking him for recording privileges, but elected instead to go stealth. In the 80s and very early 90s Jorma, and Hot Tuna, were very taping friendly, but that changed later on. I believe that it’s always better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission, especially if permission is not granted! I remember that I sent this recording to Mike at ‘TunaBase’ years later because he didn’t have a recording from this show. Always glad to help! 🙂

Pretty good recording, awesome stuffs. Almost all the songs are not complete, some fades in,
some fades out, some are cut, but it’s just an super jam !

notes:
this is a remaster of shnid 17081

I haven’t attempted to do any additional work on the pitch problems
although Truckin’, in particular, is badly in need of some attention.
My interest was to try and improve the overall sound of the show.
I have done this by remixing the channels and then using various plugins,
in conjunction with Wavelab. Some minor artifacts have also been repaired.

Thanks Agent67, without whom……

per Deadlists:
The first 110 minutes of the recording are not too bad; thereafter the
sound quality deteriorates severely (the 2nd 90-minute tape starts with
Drums > Good Lovin’). Reportedly, the master was made by one
Mike Tannenbaum on reels concealed in a wheelchair at the center of
the 5th row (the back of the orchestra pit?) ; the first 90 minutes of
the tape sound consistent with this; during the 2nd tape it sounds as if
the taper perhaps got swarmed when the crowd got up & thereafter his mics
were muffled by surrounding bodies, but there are also other problems with
the second 90 minutes of this tape, among them pitch problems perhaps
caused by the deck bouncing with the dancing floorboards. Whatever the
cause, the quality of reproduction on the 2nd tape of this set is
piss poor.

Notes from the original uploader:
Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it was
recorded in a studio setup.

The lineup is reportedly the following:
Jerry Garcia – Guitar
Jorma Kaukonen – Guitar
Jack Cassady – Bass
Mickey Hart – Percussion
Spencer Dryden – Percussion

Known Flaws:
A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 – 0:23
of track 01 was edited out using EAC’s wave editing function.
A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC.

Much thanks to Morgan Evans for putting this gem into my hands!
