  • The opening Jam cuts in. The first few notes of UJB are clipped.
  • Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade opened.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was the second of two Phil shows that I saw in a row at the Greek. It’s a beautiful amphitheater, but driving in Berkeley is NUTS! Les Claypool and the Flying Frog Brigade was one of the opening bands this weekend. I recorded that set but I don’t think it ever got transferred. I decided that I wasn’t a big Les Claypool fan. I really liked hearing Warren Haynes play and sign with Phil. I went to these two shows with my friend Taper Ron, who I first met at the Saturday Grateful Dead show at Shoreline on 10/3/87. Party on, Ron!

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This weekend was the only time I have been to the Greek Theatre at Berkeley. Sadly I never made it there to see or record the Dead. It’s a beautiful amphitheater with an awesome view of San Francisco. Unfortunately I don’t have really good memories of the venue, because driving in Berkeley is royal pain. It seemed to take us 40 years to get to the show from Oakland, where my friend Ron lived. Plus, Security almost threw me out for taking photos of my friend Taper Ron in the tapers section. I had no idea that you couldn’t bring cameras into the Greek. The Dead were always cool with (non flash) cameras. They pulled me out to the front gates and proceeded to confiscate the battery out of my Nikon FM2N , and I had to plead with them not to eject me by saying that I had a taping rig set up and running. They looked at my Nikon FM2N and 80-200 f/2.8 AF lens and said, ‘How did you get THAT in here?’. Ah, in my taping bag with all my other gear. Like I said, I had no idea you couldn’t bring in cameras. The show was good, and I really liked hearing Warren Haynes play with Phil. ‘She Said She Said’ was awesome. Man, Warren has some pipes! For some reason, lost to time, I lost the encore and had to get a copy from another recording.

I stayed the night at a friend of my friend Ron’s in Oakland and went back to the Greek to record the Sunday Phil show.

“Summer Session ’99” Tour. * Without Michael Kang. Band was: Phil Lesh – Bass and Vocals, Steve Kimock – Guitar, John Molo – Drums, Kyle Hollingsworth – Keyboards and vocals, Warren Haynes – Guitar and vocals, Micheal Kang – Electric Mandolin. Openers: Moe and Government Mule.

Total tracks = [02:22:42]

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This show was billed as “Summer Session ’99”, and I taped up front and hung my Neumanns underneath Bonnie Harris’s Schoeps MK-41v mics. This tour was with Gov’t Mule and Phil & Friends as constants, and the bands moe., Galatic, and String Cheese Incident rotated from show to show. I remember thinking that moe was weird, but I have heard they have a core following. I was indebted at this show to Bonnie Harris for letting me hang my Neumann KM140s under her Schoeps MK41Vs, and also to my friend Allan Chen for supplying the Lunatec V2 microphone preamp which was far better than my Beyer MV100. The tapers section was on the floor up front and was totally filled by the time I got in. It’s nice to have friends!! 🙂

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
(This set is tracked as one long jam, with several themes interspersed.)
This was my first Gov’t Mule show. The plastic clamps on my microphone stand broke as I was setting up, but I was able to patch into Dan’s KM-184’s. The etree listing is wrong however. They list a Lunatec V2 mic preamp when it was actually a Lunatec 316 studio model that Dan had rigged to run off of a car battery. He brought a hand truck into the show with all of his gear in anvil cases. Dan was first in line and I was right behind him. Wow! I patched my D7 into his DA-P1. I was so impressed with the sound of the Neumanns that I sold my Nakamichi’s and bought a set of Neumanns later that year! We were up in the left balcony and Dan had his KM-184s spread about a foot and a half in an OFTF pattern. This recording SHINES, especially during the acoustic opening set with Tim Reynolds and Warren. (I was Mesmerized by Tim’s playing, with all the electronic effects and sampling.)

The Catalyst has two balconies on either side of the stage, and I think the balconies sound much better than the floor does. This is the show that my buddy Jack, the dwarf, left the show with some woman he met and I never saw him again for the rest of the night. I waited until 3 am in Santa Cruz and he never showed up, so I left. At 6 am when I had just gotten home my phone rang and it was him, drunk, saying, “Where are you?” He took a bus home the following day and was mad at me but hey, I waited until 3 am. What was I going to do? He gave me gas for years about leaving him in Santa Cruz. I looked for him EVERYWHERE, and remember looking for him out in the back of the Catalyst and there was a taper who I saw give Warren Haynes a DAT tape case. He looked confused and opened it up, and inside was a bomber joint!
