What a beautiful couple of nights at the 300-seat Yoshi’s. Van seemed to be getting over a cold on Tuesday, and unfortunately, I couldn’t tape that night anyway, but he was in excellent form for the last show of the run.

I had a great spot for sound, but unfortunately talking is an issue and I had to pick my battles with this show. It never ceases to amaze me that the bigger the artist and the smaller the venue, the more people need to talk over the music. The talking never lasts for too long, and is usually quiet after the first few seconds of a song. So I spent a great deal of time trying to mitigate the talking, perhaps at the expense of tamping down audience noise in between songs. But I have 1-2 passages that were just a little much to take on and I left them as-is. If you knew how much time I spent on this show since last Wednesday you’d understand haha.

And luckily the place is pretty quiet for Van’s first performance of Send in the Clowns in decades. It’s a stirring performance that you had to be there to truly understand. He was seated, sunglasses off, and by the end he was standing and conducting the drummer with those drum rolls and snare hits that you’ll hear. It is something that I will never forget.
