Pink Floyd – Zabriskie Point Live

PInk Floyd
Zabriskie Point Live

Creating the definitive Collection of Pink Floyd’s Zabriskie Point Material always meant to me to add the 3 known live performances from Jan/Feb 1970. As most of us know, the quality of most of these recordings is extremely brutal. Although I think that these recordings from Fairfield Hall, Croydon 1970-01-18 Theatre de Champs-Elysees a Paris, 1970-01-23 and Town Hall, Birmingham, 1970-02-11 never sounded better, they are still an addition for the sake of completeness.

What we have here are live performances of Heart Beat, Pig Meat, The Violent Sequence, Variations of Oenone, Moonhead and fragments of Rain in the Country, now rearranged in the Floyd’s then brand new work-in-progress The Amazing Pudding, which during the following year’s road work became the title track of their 1970 studio effort Atom Heart Mother.

The Remaster:
The tracks were all -one more, one less- denoised. Nowadays Noise Reduction is possible with almost no to no NR artifacts at all, which these recordings clearly benefit from.

Static Hum was removed on all tracks.

The Croydon and Birmingham recordings have almost no high-end. By means of harmonic synthesis a kind of artificial high-end was added. This might sound a little „robotic“ at times, but it makes the songs far more listenable.

But in the end you can’t change shit into marmelade…

Paris is a bit better. Sourced from the 1995 FM rebroadcast it is the most enjoyable portion of this collection. This is why I added TAP from this date instead of the 2 others, which have that track available as well. Only the beginning of TVS had to be patch with the AM broadcast.

In the end one can only say that it is a shame that no better recordings of these dates exist as they absolutely were the climax of early Pink Floyd’s most creative period. Let’s close and pray for a soundboard to surface one day while diving down into some of the most mystic moments of Pink Floyd on stage…

Notes from Collectors Music Reviews

The new release At The Beeb Volume I by the label Culombia (sic) is a compilation of 4 different BBC radio broadcasts of Pink Floyd performances from December 1967 to May 1969. The first, second, & fourth are ìTop Gearî shows, while the third one is a ìNite Rideî show. They comprise the 1st disc of a double-disc factory-pressed silver original real 2-CD set ñ Volume II, the 2nd disc of the set, is of the legendary BBC session of September 30th, 1971, which I decided not to buy since I already have 5 different versions of it and canít imagine the best ones possibly getting any noticeably superior. Anyway, Volume I was selected because, although the outstanding Celestial Voices that was released by Rover Records several months ago included a major upgrade in sound quality for the first & third BBC shows, a big upgrade in sound quality for the second & fourth BBC shows can now be found on Volume I ñ in addition to such an upgrade for the first & third BBC shows that were included on Celestial Voices.

Unfortunately my ears arenít good enough to be able to discern any noticeable difference(s) in quality between the same shows found on both Celestial Voices & Volume I, but all 4 shows on Volume I are a certain, long-awaited major upgrade in quality for the same 4 shows that can be found on the old Great Dane Recordsí release The Complete Top Gear Sessions 1967-1969 (GDR CD 9206). Sadly, however, the old GDR title includes a 5th BBC show, from the autumn of 1967, for which a significant quality upgrade is apparently not available ñ at least not yet.

The following is printed in exact word-for-word verbatim near the top of the rear cover of Volume I – ìThese soundboard recordings are taken from the original masters, except for tracks 13 to 16 which were copied from an excellent broadcast recordings.î

Introductory &/or concluding comments, mostly by John Peel, can be heard at the ends of each track. Packaged in a regular 1-CD jewel case, but with the rear insert being single-sided only in terms of artwork, with still very nice artwork overall thatís done similarly to that of Floydís 2nd officially released album, A Saucerful of Secrets, At The Beeb Volume I is a terrific find that is very highly recommended.

A brilliant little compilation, encompassing some of the overlooked radio work the Floyd did early in their careers,
in brilliant quality. Nice and laid back, almost to the point of what is regarded ‘Stereotypical Floyd’, in astounding
quality. As stated, the announcements are by the LEGENADRY John Peel, with some interesting little anecdotes from him included; it’s almost like you’ve tuned into the shows the day they were broadcast – possibly the greatest nostalgia trip.
I would rate this as ‘ESSENTIAL’.

Pink Floyd – A Fish Out of Water, 1966

Pink Floyd
A Fish Out of Water

King Bee
Lucy Leave

Roger Waters left Cambridge in 1962 to study architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London. There he met fellow student Nick Mason. In 1963 they both joined the existing group, Sigma 6.

Sigma 6 was also known as the Megadeaths (or Meggadeaths), Leonard’s Lodgers, The Tea Set (or The T-Set), The Abdabs, The Architectural Abdabs, and The Screaming Abdabs.

As The Tea Set, their personnel consisted of guitarists Rado “Bob” Klose and Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and pianist Richard Wright. After a brief stint with a lead vocalist named Chris Dennis, blues and folk guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett joined the band. Waters then moved to bass and Wright to full time keyboards.

This mini CD contains a CD with 2 tracks by the Architectural Abdabs (early incarnation of Pink Floyd) and is originally released in 1966.

One is a cover of a track called “I’m A King Bee” the other is a Syd composition entitled “Lucy Leave”; both feature Syd on guitar and vocals.

Also, it’s worth noting that the sound quality is pretty good considering the tracks were copied from the original acetate pressing.

Comes in a plain white slipcase with a 120 page book entitled “Syd Barrett – A Fish Out Of Water” (adapted from wikipedia).
