OldNeumanntapr Notes:
I was really impressed with last year’s Brothers Comatose show at SLO Brew and was determined to record them once again. Since SLO Brew closed down in December of 2015, Todd of ‘Good Medicine Presents’ has been promoting concerts at various local venues including Tap It Brewing Company, where this show took place. (I’m going to miss SLO Brew, but they are building new office buildings on the entire block.) I’d never been to Tap It before, but knew it was out by the airport. However, I didn’t know that the concert area was outdoors! When I’d asked Corey, Todd’s wife, at the recent Los Lobos concert if Tap It Brewing Company was a good room to record in she said that it was a ‘great room’. So on arrival, it was a little disconcerting to find that I would be recording outdoors with NO windscreens for my Neumanns! There was a little bit of a breeze blowing while I was setting up and I knew that my plans for a matrix recording was in serious jeopardy. (This was my first show with my new Mackie mixer. Yay! No more borrowing gear from Bill Gaines Audio!) Fortunately, Chad (the Brothers Comatose Soundman) let me use the windscreens from the Rode microphones that he had set up to record with. I tried to patch his Zoom recorder into my rig but had some problems, so he elected to let me record. Thanks so much Chad for the use of the windscreens! One thing I didn’t take into account was the fact that the machinery used for the brewery of the production of beer was directly next to the soundboard area, on the other side of a fence. Periodically, a loud hissing noise could be heard, most likely a pressure relief valve that would blow off steam from the beer tanks. When this occurred I tried to drop the levels on the audience microphones, but it can still be heard. I asked Kip about it and he laughed and said that it, ‘Goes off all night.’ Oh joy.

The Brothers Comatose has a new CD out and they played a couple of the new songs. They are a very high energy acoustic band and once again did not disappoint! Thanks guys for allowing live recording and the sharing of your music. I enjoyed the new songs and still love the old favorites like ‘Pie For Breakfast’, though this rendition was marred when Gio’s bass cable because unplugged and he was forced to use his voice to mimic the missing bass.
Thanks to Todd and Corey from ‘Good Medicine Presents’, thanks to house soundman Kip Stork for his ever present help, and Chad from ‘The Brothers Comatose’. Thanks to the band for putting on a great show. Go see their live shows and support the band by buying their merchandise!

Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. 😉
